A lot of guys sizing a 2 post car lift for their own bay start by thinking about the truck they own today, not the truck that’s going to roll in for exhaust work next winter. If you’re doing driveline and exhaust access on one-ton trucks, you’re regularly dealing with 9,000 to 11,000 pounds sitting unevenly on the frame, and that matters more than the sticker capacity of the lift. We had this exact conversation with a municipal fleet contact a while back: a 10,000 lb two-post handles a one-ton truck fine as long as it’s not a service body or boom truck. Those rigs load the rear axle much heavier than the front, sometimes 7,000 in the back and 3,000 up front, and that uneven load chews through arm and cable components fast on an undersized lift.

For a clean slab with good access, a two-post install typically runs a crew a day, covering base plate layout, anchoring, hydraulic hookup, cable adjustment, and calibration. If the bay has an existing lift coming out, or if there’s tight column spacing to work around, that adds time and cost on top of the base install.

Stage five: budgeting for ongoing parts and cylinder care
The upfront cost of a 2 post car lift isn’t the end of the budget conversation, and any shop owner who’s run a lift for a few years knows it. Cylinders wear, cables stretch, and hydraulic seals age, especially in a bay running heavy trucks daily. We’ve handled plenty of cylinder rebuilds on lifts that were only a few years old, simply because daily heavy-duty use puts more wear on seals than occasional light car use ever would. Budgeting a little for cylinder service down the line, rather than being surprised by it, keeps a shop from having a lift down unexpectedly during a busy stretch.
