What a Heavy-Duty Shop Actually Needs From a Two-Post

The first thing we ask a truck shop is what the heaviest vehicle on the schedule weighs, and then we ignore that answer and ask what the heaviest vehicle they might take in weighs. Shops grow into their equipment. A guy who says his heaviest is a 6,000 lb pickup today is going to say yes when a customer rolls up in a loaded dually with a service body on the back, and that truck is pushing 9,500. Capacity is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy. Going from a 10,000 lb column to a 12,000 or 15,000 lb column is a meaningful but not catastrophic price jump, and it removes the mental math from every vehicle that pulls in.

Beyond raw capacity, heavy-duty work changes what matters on the machine. You want tall columns, because a crew-cab pickup on a standard-height lift puts the rocker at a height that makes fluid service miserable for anyone over six feet. You want three-stage front arms with real reach, because truck lift points sit farther inboard than a sedan’s. You want screw pads with enough stack height to clear running boards and rock rails without stacking blocks. And you want asymmetric or a true versymmetric arm setup if the bay also sees the owner’s car. Those features exist on nearly every current model, but they are exactly the features missing from a decade-old column someone is unloading cheap.

The Real Cost of a New 2 Post Car Lift, Line by Line

People price equipment by the sticker and then get surprised twice. Here’s the honest line-item picture for a new install in a working shop. The lift itself, in a 10,000 to 12,000 lb clear-floor configuration from a name brand, sits in the low-to-mid four figures on the value end and climbs into the five-figure range for a Rotary or Challenger with a heavier capacity and a longer warranty. Freight is its own line — a two-post ships on a pallet that’s heavy and awkward, and residential or liftgate delivery costs more than a commercial dock drop. If you have a forklift on site, tell your supplier, because it takes real money off the delivery.

Then comes the site work. Concrete verification is non-negotiable: most 10,000 lb two-posts want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and heavier columns want more. If your slab is thin, cracked, or you can’t confirm the pour, cutting and pouring footings is a separate contractor cost that can rival a chunk of the lift price. Electrical is next — a 208-230V single-phase circuit run to the column, or three-phase in a commercial shop. Finally, install labor. A professional two-post install with anchoring, shimming, plumb verification, cable and hydraulic routing, bleed-down, and a load test is a half-day to full-day job for a two-person crew. Budget for all five lines, not just the first one.

Where Used Lifts Genuinely Make Sense

We are not anti-used. We sell parts for machines older than some of our techs, and a well-maintained column from a shop that closed can be a legitimately good buy. The scenario where used works: the lift is a current or recent model from a brand still supported in North America, you can inspect it standing and under load before it comes down, the previous owner has the manual and the ANSI/ALI labels are intact, and the removal is being done by someone who knows to mark column orientation and cable routing before anything gets unbolted. Under those conditions you can save a substantial percentage off new and put that money toward a proper install.

The other honest case for used is a shop that needs a third or fourth bay filled for light-duty overflow work and simply cannot justify new capital right now. A used unit that handles the pickup-and-passenger-car end of the schedule frees your good bays for the heavy stuff. What we tell people in that position is to budget for parts up front rather than pretending the machine is turnkey. New lifting cables, new hydraulic hoses, fresh fluid, new arm restraint gears, and a full set of pads on a used two-post is a predictable expense, and doing all of it on day one is cheaper than doing it piecemeal after a failure. The Hidden Costs That Sink a Used Purchase

The used deals that go bad almost never go bad on the price. They go bad on logistics and on unknowns. Rigging a two-post down safely takes equipment — you’re dealing with columns that weigh several hundred pounds each, a carriage under spring tension in some designs, and anchor bolts that have been in concrete for fifteen years and do not want to come out. If you have to hire that out, it eats the discount. Then there’s transport: two columns, a top beam or baseplate, four arms, and a crate of hardware is a trailer load, and if you’re driving three states each way, fuel and a day of your own labor is real money.

The unknowns are worse. An orphan brand with no parts channel is a paperweight the first time a power unit fails. Missing manuals mean no anchor pattern, no torque specs, and no arm restraint documentation. Bent arms, elongated pin holes, worn sheaves, and frayed equalizer cables are all repairable, but each one is a line item you didn’t plan for. We got a call from a shop with a Challenger two-post where the motor ran and the fluid was full but nothing lifted — that’s usually a lowering valve stuck open, a blown cylinder seal, or a plugged pickup screen, and on a supported brand it’s a quick fix. On an unsupported one, it’s a long search. Add all of that to the auction price before you compare it to new.

Oil Changes and Fluid Service: The Workflow Argument

If your revenue is built on fluid service volume, the lift is a production tool, not a convenience. A 2 post car lift wins over a four-post for this work because the wheels hang free and nothing blocks the underside — you get straight access to the drain plug, the filter, the transfer case, and the differentials without maneuvering around runways. On a truck fleet doing scheduled service, that unobstructed access is minutes saved per vehicle, and minutes per vehicle across a year is a bay’s worth of throughput.

Column height matters more here than anywhere else. If you’re changing oil on lifted pickups all day, a standard-height clear-floor unit will have you stooping under the frame on tall trucks and reaching overhead on lowered cars. Tall or extended-height columns cost modestly more and pay it back in technician fatigue alone. Rise speed matters too — a faster power unit on a shop doing twenty services a day is worth the upgrade. And think about drain equipment: if you’re running an overhead oil reel and a used-fluid drain on casters, a clear-floor two-post keeps the floor open for both. Baseplate models put a bar across the drive-through, which is fine for a one-bay operation but becomes a stubbed-toe hazard in a busy fluid service lane. Match the configuration to how many vehicles cross that floor per day.

Concrete, Ceilings, and Bay Layout in Real Iowa Shops

We install across the corridor from Council Bluffs to the Quad Cities, and the single most common surprise is concrete. Older shop slabs in this part of the country were poured for parking, not for anchoring, and “about four inches” turns into three and a half with rebar in the wrong place more often than anyone likes. Before you commit to a lift, core the slab or at minimum drill a test hole in the anchor zone and measure. If it’s short, the fix is a saw-cut footing pad — typically a four-by-four foot section per column, poured to depth, cured for the manufacturer’s specified time before anchoring. That’s a week of downtime in that bay and a contractor bill, and it’s far better discovered in the planning stage than on install day.

Ceiling height drives the configuration decision. A clear-floor two-post needs roughly twelve feet minimum to be comfortable, and more if you want full rise on a tall truck. We’ve had customers with a hard 139-inch maximum come to us set on an overhead model and end up with a baseplate unit instead, which was the right call. Also plan the surroundings: a loft on one side and a wall on the other, as one Missouri customer described his garage, means the arms have to swing within a fixed envelope and the drive-through width shrinks. How We’d Make the Call

Here’s the framework we give shop owners. If the lift is going to run daily on revenue work, buy new. The warranty, the parts availability, the current ALI certification, and the known install path are worth the premium when downtime costs you billable hours. If the lift is a supplemental bay, a hobby setup, or overflow capacity, a well-vetted used unit from a supported brand is a defensible choice — provided you budget cables, hoses, fluid, and pads into the purchase and have it installed by someone who will pull it and set it correctly.
