If you’re mainly draining oil, swapping filters, rotating tires, and doing basic fluid maintenance, you don’t need the tallest, heaviest-duty two post model on the market — you need one that’s easy to get under, has clean access to the drain plug and filter, and doesn’t overshoot your ceiling clearance. Match the lift to the actual use case — a mid-tier two post unit built for residential use will handle oil changes and fluid work all day long without the extra cost of a heavy-duty commercial frame you’ll never need the capacity for.

Step 6: Budget for Delivery and the Small Stuff

Hobbyists often budget for the lift itself and forget delivery logistics. If you don’t own a forklift, ask about delivery options before ordering — a curbside drop still means you need a way to get a lift that weighs well over a thousand pounds off the truck and into the garage. Some suppliers include liftgate delivery, some don’t, and that gap can turn into an unexpected cost or a scramble to borrow equipment on delivery day.

Also budget for anchor bolts rated for your specific slab, any electrical work needed for the power unit, and — if you want it — professional installation.
