Before you finalize your layout, sketch the bay to scale and mark where the columns land, where the arms extend at full swing, and where every door – overhead, man-door, or vehicle door – opens. Why a 2 Post Car Lift for Home Garage Restoration Beats a 4 Post

For metal work and restoration, a 2 post car lift for home garage use gives you open access to the rocker panels, floor pans, and suspension points that a four post runway lift partially blocks. When you’re cutting out rust or replacing quarter panels, having the arms and pads out from under the car rather than a full runway underneath makes a real difference in how much you can reach without repositioning the vehicle.

The tradeoff is that a two post lift generally needs a thicker, better-anchored slab than a four post, since all the load transfers through two columns instead of being spread across four runway feet. For a restoration project where the car might sit lifted for extended periods, we also recommend asymmetric arm configurations so you can position the vehicle with extra clearance on the door side for parts carts and rolling tool chests.

The First-Year Install Story

We typically recommend padding your expected max weight by a couple thousand pounds if there’s any chance you’ll take in project vehicles for other people down the road.

Trucks and larger classics often have frame contact points in different locations than sedans, so make sure the arm and pad configuration you choose has enough reach and adjustability to safely pick up the range of vehicles you expect to service, not just the one sitting in your driveway today.
