Step One: What’s the Heaviest Vehicle You’ll Actually Lift?
Every decision tree starts with weight, and it’s the one question people answer too optimistically. If you’re doing alignment work on a daily driver or a weekend project car, a 9,000 to 10,000 lb symmetric lift covers you with room to spare. But if there’s any chance a truck, a vintage muscle car with a heavy drivetrain, or a trailer-towed project rolls through that bay, size up. We’ve had customers tell us their heaviest vehicle is 6,000 lbs, then call back a year later asking if their lift can handle a 3/4-ton pickup. It can’t, and retrofitting capacity isn’t a thing — you buy the next tier up front or you buy twice.
For alignment work specifically, weight isn’t the only factor. You need arm reach that gets under pinch welds and frame rails without fighting the geometry, and you want adjustable rear arms that don’t bind up when you’re chasing camber and toe settings. A straight maintenance lift and an alignment-capable lift are sometimes the same machine, but not always — check the arm length and pad height before you assume.
Step Two: Baseplate or Overhead — Your Ceiling Decides
This is where southeast Iowa garages split into two camps. If you’ve got a clear ceiling above 12 feet, an overhead-style 2 post lift gives you a cleaner sightline and no crossbar to duck under. If your ceiling is lower, or there’s a door header, joists, or a garage door track in the way, you’re going to a baseplate configuration whether you like it or not. We’ve measured plenty of garages where the customer wanted overhead and the tape measure said baseplate — 139 inches of max lift height sounds like plenty until you account for vehicle height and the lift’s own overhead structure eating into that number.
Measure twice. Measure with the garage door open and closed. Measure to the lowest point in the ceiling, not the average. A 2 post car lift for home garage use has to fit the actual room, not the room you wish you had.
Step Three: Symmetric or Asymmetric Arm Layout
Symmetric lifts center the vehicle between the columns, which is the standard choice for alignment work because it keeps weight balanced and arm reach consistent side to side. Asymmetric lifts offset the vehicle forward, which opens up door swing and driver entry but can complicate arm placement on certain frame types. For a home garage doing alignment and general maintenance, we lean symmetric almost every time — it’s simpler to set up correctly and more forgiving if you’re not on the lift every single day.
The exception is if your bay is narrow and you need extra clearance to walk around an open door. In that case an asymmetric layout earns its keep. Either way, get the arm rated for your capacity, not just the columns — a 10,000 lb column set with 7,000 lb arms is a 7,000 lb lift, full stop.
Step Four: Freight, Forklifts, and the Loading Dock Problem
Here’s the part nobody budgets for. A 2 post car lift for home garage installation typically ships as several crates weighing 400 to 900 lbs each, delivered by an LTL freight carrier on a truck with a liftgate — if you’re lucky. If you don’t have a forklift, a pallet jack, or at minimum a couple strong friends and a come-along, you need to plan the unloading before the truck shows up, not after. We’ve had customers in rural Iowa with no dock and no forklift figure out a rented pallet jack and a section of plywood ramp gets the job done. Others rent a small forklift for the afternoon, which usually costs less than you’d think and saves your back.
Ask your freight company about liftgate service when you place the order, and confirm the delivery address can accommodate a semi-truck turning radius — plenty of rural driveways can’t. Step Five: DIY Install or Professional Setup
Some customers tell us straight up they don’t need or want installation — they’ve done it before, they’ve got the tools, and they just want the lift on a truck. That’s fine if you’ve bolted down a 2 post before and know how to read a set of anchor specs for your specific slab thickness. But if this is your first lift, professional installation isn’t a luxury — it’s the difference between a lift that’s plumb, level, and anchored correctly into concrete rated for the load, versus one that walks or racks over time.

Step Six: Concrete Thickness Is Not Optional Information
Every 2 post lift anchors into a specific minimum concrete thickness and cure time specified by the manufacturer, and this is non-negotiable. We’ve talked to customers ready to rod a lift into 6 to 8 inches of slab, which is plenty for most 9,000 to 10,000 lb lifts, and others assuming a thin driveway pour will work fine, which it won’t. If you don’t know your slab thickness, find out before you order — core a small test hole or check your build records. A lift with insufficient anchoring concrete isn’t a lift you can use safely, no matter how good the columns are.
New pours also need cure time, typically 28 days minimum, before anchoring. Plan your install timeline around this if you’re pouring fresh concrete for a new garage bay.
Step Seven: Budget Tiers That Actually Match Reality
Home garage 2 post lifts generally fall into three tiers. Entry-level 9,000 lb units run in the lower budget range and cover most passenger vehicles fine for occasional maintenance and alignment work. Mid-tier 10,000 lb symmetric lifts with better arm reach and telescoping screw pads step up from there and are our most common recommendation for serious hobbyists. Heavy-duty 12,000 lb-plus units with wider column spacing and reinforced arms sit at the top, built for anyone running trucks or project vehicles with real weight.
