An independent shop owner in Iowa City walked us through his bay layout last fall because he was tired of doing CV axle and half-shaft replacement on a mid-rise scissor and a floor jack. He wanted a 2 post car lift, he had two very different quotes in hand, and he could not tell which one was actually better for the work he does. One was a used 12,000 lb asymmetric clearfloor from a dealership that closed. The other was a new 10,000 lb symmetric unit, delivered, with install. Same ballpark money once everything was counted. Why CV Axle Work Changes the Spec
Half-shaft and CV joint replacement is a wheels-off, suspension-loaded job. You need the vehicle high enough to work standing up with a pry bar and an air hammer, you need clear access to the inner joint at the transmission or intermediate shaft, and you need the ability to swing a hub carrier without banging into a column. That last part is where arm geometry earns its keep. On a badly positioned setup, the driver-side front arm sits exactly where your shoulder wants to be.
That is why we push shops doing a lot of drivetrain work toward three-stage front arms and generous drive-through width. Three-stage arms reach further forward, which lets you set the front pickup points behind the pinch weld crush zone on modern unibody cars while still keeping the column out of the work area. A symmetric configuration centers the vehicle between the columns, which is great for balance and for truck work but puts the door frame near the column post. An asymmetric configuration rotates the columns and shifts the vehicle rearward so doors open freely, which matters if you are also pulling interior trim or doing brake and suspension inspections on cars all day. Neither is universally right. It depends on what rolls into the bay.
Configuration A: The Used 12,000 lb Asymmetric Clearfloor
The used unit was a name-brand asymmetric clearfloor with about eleven years on it, pulled from a franchise dealership in eastern Iowa that closed its service department. Data plate legible, ALI label intact, three-stage front arms, two-stage rears, 12,000 lb capacity, roughly 74 inches of maximum lift height. On paper it outclassed the new option on every number. The columns were straight, the powder coat was faded but not flaking, and the seller had service records showing an annual inspection every year but the last one.
What it did not have: cables of known age, a cylinder that had ever been resealed, current anchors, or a warranty. It also had noticeable slide block wear, which we could see as lateral play in the carriages when we cycled it before the slab was cut. Our estimate to put that lift into service properly was a full cable set, four slide block kits, arm pins and restraint gear rebuild, a hydraulic flush with new fluid, new anchors, and an inspection. Add freight from the dealership to Iowa City plus rigging, because a closing-dealership sale almost never includes help loading. Once we added that up, the used lift was still cheaper than new, but only by a modest margin, and every dollar of that margin was riding on the cylinder not weeping and the columns being truly plumb after install.
Configuration B: The New 10,000 lb Symmetric Clearfloor
The new option was a current-production 10,000 lb symmetric clearfloor with an expandable top beam, telescoping screw pads, drop-end arms, padded overhead shutoff bar, and a single-point safety release. That feature list reads like marketing copy until you have used a lift without drop-end arms on a lowered car and had to stack four adapter pucks to reach a pinch weld. Drop-end arms give you a lower minimum pad height, which is exactly what you want for the Subarus, Hondas, and low-slung front-drive cars that generate most CV axle work in a shop like his.
Capacity was the sticking point. Ten thousand pounds sounds small next to twelve. In practice, his heaviest regular vehicle was a half-ton pickup at about 6,000 lb, and his stated worst case was under 7,000. Ten thousand pounds with proper arm loading is plenty of margin for that mix, and honestly, a lot of shops buy capacity they will never use because a bigger number feels safer. What the new unit bought him instead was a fresh cylinder, fresh cables with a documented service life ahead of them, a live parts catalog, a manufacturer warranty on the structure, and no guessing about how a previous owner treated it. It also arrived with correct anchors in the crate and an installation manual written for that exact serial range.
Bay Geometry: Ceiling Height and the Baseplate Fallback
His shop had an honest 11 feet 8 inches to the bottom of the joists, with a sprinkler main running across one bay. That is the kind of measurement that quietly disqualifies a clearfloor unit. Most 10,000 lb overhead configurations want 12 feet minimum, and the taller-capacity units want more. We measured to the lowest obstruction, not to the deck, because the shutoff bar does not care that there is another eight inches available two feet to the left.
When the ceiling will not cooperate, a baseplate 2 post car lift is the right answer, not a consolation prize. Baseplate units route the equalizer cable and hydraulic hose through a low floor plate between the columns, so there is nothing overhead at all. The tradeoff is a small ramp over the plate and a strip of floor you have to sweep and eventually inspect for damage. We have installed baseplate columns in low-ceiling shops from Cedar Rapids to Council Bluffs, and once the techs get used to stepping over the plate, complaints stop. A buyer we quoted with a hard 139-inch ceiling limit came to the same conclusion, and he was happier with a properly specified baseplate unit than he would have been ducking under a crossbeam every day. If you can gain height by relocating a sprinkler branch or a light fixture, get a real number on that work before you rule out overhead.
Concrete: The Item That Decides Both Options
Neither configuration works on bad concrete, and this is where we slow every conversation down. Manufacturers generally specify four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb unit, cured, with defined minimum distance from slab edges and control joints. Heavier capacities want five to six inches. His slab was a 1970s pour, and “four-plus inches” was the owner’s guess. We cored it. Two of four proposed anchor locations came in under spec because of an old drain trench that had been patched.
The fix was a pair of cut-in footing pads, roughly 30 inches square and 10 inches deep, tied in and cured before install. That added days to the timeline and a real chunk to the budget, but it applied equally to the used and new option, which is exactly why we bring it up before anyone signs anything. Concrete cost is configuration-neutral and it is not negotiable. We have been called out to shops where somebody set a 2 post car lift on thin concrete with short anchors, and the failure mode is an anchor pulling under load with a vehicle in the air. That is a walk-away-from-the-building kind of problem. Core the slab, know the number, and budget for footings if the number is wrong. Parts Availability and the Downtime Math
Here is the argument that ultimately moved him. An independent shop with three bays cannot afford to have one of them offline. When a lift stops working, the question is not what it costs to fix, it is how many days it takes to get the part. We stock cables, cylinders, slide blocks, arm restraints, power units, and safety hardware for the major brands, and we can usually get a common wear part moving the same week. Discontinued or off-brand equipment is a different story, and we have watched shops wait a month on a cylinder for an import lift nobody imports anymore.
A concrete example: a shop sent us a Challenger two-post where the motor ran, the reservoir was full, and nothing was leaking, but the lift would not rise. That is a classic symptom set pointing at a check valve, a lowering valve stuck open, or an internal cylinder bypass. Because it was a supported brand, the diagnosis took under an hour and the parts were on the shelf. Had that been an unbranded auction find, the same failure could have meant fabricating or sourcing a cylinder from scratch. When you compare a used unit against a new one, put a dollar value on your daily bay revenue and multiply it by realistic downtime risk. That number is usually bigger than the price gap.
The Framework, and What He Bought

Have you priced cables, slide blocks, seals, and anchors into your total instead of assuming they are fine? And can your business absorb a two-week outage if something breaks? He bought the new symmetric clearfloor in a baseplate configuration to clear the sprinkler main, we cut in two footing pads, ran a dedicated 220V single-phase circuit, and installed and load-tested in a day once the concrete had cured. Six months in, his techs are doing CV axle and half-shaft jobs standing upright instead of on a creeper, and the used dealership lift went to a hobbyist with a tall garage and time on his hands, which is exactly the right home for it.
