Mobile mechanics live and die by two things: how much they can do at the customer’s location, and how much they can charge to bring vehicles to a home base for the jobs that don’t work in the field. A brake job on jack stands in someone’s driveway is 90 minutes; the same brake job on a lift is 25 minutes. Over the course of a year, a mobile mechanic doing three or four brake jobs a week loses roughly 300 hours to jack-stand time. Buy back 200 of those hours with a 2 post car lift and you’ve paid for the lift, the freight, the install, and a fair chunk of your shop building in the first eighteen months.

The overhead had a slightly cleaner floor (no equalizer running across the drive-in path), and the baseplate saved $200 and required no ceiling penetrations for cable routing. Picking the right capacity for a variable customer mix
A mobile mechanic’s customer mix is genuinely variable — sedans, minivans, half-ton pickups, the occasional customer three-quarter-ton for a big brake job. He didn’t want to turn away a job because his lift was under-specced, but he also didn’t want to overspend on capacity he’d rarely use. That’s the honest capacity conversation for a solo mobile mechanic: spec for 95 percent of your work, refer the rest. Chasing the 5 percent case with a 15K lift means paying $2,500 more up front and every consumable cycle after that for a use case that pays maybe two invoices a year. The 10K SPOA10 was the right 2 post car lift for the actual workload, and eighteen months in he hasn’t once been the limiting factor on a job.
Freight from the factory to a Davenport residential shop
Freight from Rotary’s Madison, Indiana factory to Davenport is a one-day LTL lane. The 2 post car lift ships as an 8-foot crate plus a smaller power-unit box, total shipping weight 1,750 lbs, freight class 85. LTL freight bill: $340 to a business address in a commercial zip code, $410 to a residential address. Yes, LTL carriers charge more for residential delivery — it’s built into the rate table because residential streets are harder to navigate and delivery windows are less predictable. The Davenport mechanic’s shop was zoned residential-agricultural, so the residential rate applied.
Delivery windows are four-hour appointment slots, typically 8am-12pm or 12pm-4pm. He blocked the morning window and cleared the driveway. If you’re taking delivery at a residential address and you have a narrow driveway or overhanging trees, tell the carrier — they’ll assign a shorter tractor-trailer or plan to unload at the curb. Unloading in a gravel driveway with no forklift
No forklift, no telehandler, no loading dock — this is the challenge that trips up most residential 2 post car lift installs. Hour one: uncrate, sort columns and hardware, layout column positions on the slab with chalk, verify square. Hour two: drill anchor holes with a rotary hammer, set wedge anchors, torque to spec, verify plumb. Hour three: raise columns, install overhead crossbeam, route hydraulic and cable lines, connect power unit. Hour four: install arms, hydraulic prime and bleed, test rise and lower cycle unloaded, test safety-cam engagement. Hour five: load-test with the Camry, cycle three times, sign the ALI acceptance paperwork.
That five-hour timeline is normal for a clean residential 2 post car lift install with no concrete work required. A commercial install in an existing shop usually runs six to eight hours because of tool-cart movement and existing-equipment coordination. The advantage of a fresh empty shop is that we can pre-stage every part and work without moving obstacles. Every install we do finishes with the owner signing an acceptance form, receiving the ALI Gold Label certificate, and getting a printed maintenance schedule for cable inspection, hydraulic-fluid change, and annual re-inspection.
What the mobile side looked like after the lift arrived
Eighteen months after the install, the Davenport mechanic’s business shape has changed.
