The Arm Restraint System, Explained Simply

Every ALI Gold certified 2 post car lift has an arm restraint system. Its job is to prevent the swing arms from rotating out from under the vehicle during a lift cycle. Without arm restraints, a vehicle placed slightly off-center could shift as it lifts, arms could swing, and the vehicle could fall. Arm restraints solve that failure mode by mechanically locking the arm rotation once the arm is under load. Every reputable lift includes them; every ALI Gold certified lift requires them for certification.

Two dominant designs: gear-driven restraints (Rotary, most Challenger models) use a small toothed gear on the arm pivot that engages a stationary pawl when the arm is loaded. Ratchet-driven restraints (some BendPak models, some older Challengers) use a spring-loaded ratcheting mechanism. Both engage automatically as soon as the arm accepts load — no manual step by the tech. Both disengage when the tech pulls a release lever at the base of the column, allowing the arm to swing free for repositioning between vehicles. Both meet ALI ALCTV standards. What matters for safety is that the restraint engages every time and disengages only when commanded. A restraint that fails to engage is a serious safety issue; a restraint that fails to disengage is a service inconvenience. Both need attention, but the former is a lift-out-of-service condition until fixed.

Safety Cam Engagement: How It Should Feel and Sound

The safety cam — sometimes called the safety lock or safety pawl — is the mechanical stop that catches the lift carriage at fixed detents during upward travel. Its purpose is to prevent uncontrolled descent if the hydraulic system fails at any point in the lift stroke. Every 2 post car lift has them; on both Rotary and Challenger, safety cams engage every 3 to 4 inches of upward travel.

Sound and feel matter for verification. A properly working safety cam engages with a sharp audible click at each detent as the carriage passes the notch. The click should be crisp and unmistakable through normal shop noise. If you cannot hear the click, either the shop is too loud (turn off the compressor briefly during verification) or the cam pivot is dragging and the pawl is not dropping fully into the notch. A dragging pawl is a service issue. In extreme cold — think an unheated municipal maintenance building in western Illinois at 15 degrees F — grease in the pawl pivot can stiffen and slow engagement. Address this seasonally with a lithium-based low-temperature grease during pre-winter PM. Feel matters too. When you rest the carriage on a safety cam by lowering slightly onto the detent, the lift should hold rock-solid with no perceptible drop or drift. If you feel any settling, the cam has not fully engaged. Cycle up an inch and try again; if it still settles, take the lift out of service and inspect.

Pre-Lift Vehicle Positioning Safety Checks

Every lift cycle should start with three pre-lift checks. First: vehicle centered between columns. Both drive-side and passenger-side tires equidistant from their respective columns, verified by eye across the vehicle’s centerline. An off-center vehicle loads the arms asymmetrically, stresses arm restraints unevenly, and — in worst case — can shift during lift as arm restraints engage at slightly different points. Second: manufacturer-specified lift points confirmed with the vehicle’s service manual or a lift-point chart. Not every vehicle lifts on the same pinch weld or subframe location. Guessing here is how vehicles get damaged and how sheet metal gets tweaked.

Third: pads seated firmly against the lift point with no play. Push each pad up by hand against the vehicle before starting the hydraulic lift. If a pad moves after “seating,” reposition until it does not. This last check is the one techs skip when they are in a hurry. Do not skip it. A pad that slides off a subframe rail at 3 feet of lift height is how a vehicle falls off a lift. On a 2 post car lift servicing a mixed municipal fleet — plow trucks, mowers, small vans, occasional passenger vehicles — the lift-point variability across vehicle types makes this check especially critical. A pad chart posted on the column, updated as the fleet changes, is inexpensive insurance. Municipal fleet lifts should have printed lift-point references for every make and model in the fleet, laminated and hung within eye-line of the operator.

Mid-Lift Safety Verification: The 30-Second Check

Once the vehicle is off the ground and at working height, take 30 seconds before crawling under it. Visual scan across both arm restraints — both should be visibly engaged (the restraint indicator or pawl position should show locked). Push each arm slightly by hand at the pivot end near the column. It should not move. If either arm moves even slightly, lower the vehicle and diagnose before continuing.

Set the safety cams intentionally. Lower the carriage half an inch until it rests fully on the nearest cam detent. Feel and hear the engagement. Verify both master and slave columns have their cams engaged — the slave column has an identical cam system that engages at the same time as the master. If one cam engages and the other does not, you have a synchronization issue with the equalizer cable that needs immediate attention. Finally, do a walk-around at working height: look at both columns from top to bottom, look at both arm pivots, look at the cable routing. Any oil weep, any misalignment, any hardware appearing loose — stop and address before working underneath. This 30-second check is the single highest-value safety practice on a working 2 post car lift, and it is the check that municipal fleet operators most reliably skip because they are cycling vehicles fast. Slow down for 30 seconds. It is the difference between a normal day and a headline.

What Failure Modes Look Like on Each System

Arm restraint failure typically shows up in one of two ways. Failure to engage: the arm rotates freely under load, no restraint noise, no positive lock feel. This is a lift-out-of-service condition. Failure to disengage: the arm is locked and will not swing free even when the release lever is pulled. This is inconvenient but not immediately dangerous; the lift can still service vehicles with arms in their locked position, though repositioning between vehicles becomes tedious. Root cause of failure-to-engage is usually a bent pawl, a worn gear tooth, or debris in the pivot mechanism. Root cause of failure-to-disengage is usually a stuck spring or a dry pivot.

Safety cam failure shows up similarly. Failure to engage: no audible click during lift, no positive stop when carriage is lowered onto detent. Root cause is usually a stuck pawl, a bent pawl, or a broken engagement spring. Failure to disengage: the cam locks in the down position and the carriage will not lift past the first detent. Root cause is usually a broken release cable or a stuck release lever. Both failure modes on both systems require immediate service before returning the lift to production. On any 2 post car lift in a municipal fleet application, keep a stock of the most common spare parts — pawl springs, arm restraint hardware kits, release cables — so a failure does not become a week of downtime waiting for parts. Annual Safety Inspection Protocol for Fleet Lifts

ANSI/ALI ALOIM defines an annual safety inspection standard for commercial lift equipment. For municipal fleet operators, we recommend following it exactly. The annual inspection includes: visual and load-tested verification of every arm restraint, every safety cam, every hydraulic hose and cylinder seal, cable tension and wear at both terminations and both sheaves, anchor bolt torque verification, level check at full lift height, hydraulic fluid analysis (particle count and viscosity), electrical circuit and disconnect switch integrity, and documentation review of the previous 12 months of maintenance logs.

A qualified inspector performs this — the ALI-certified Lift Inspector Certification Program produces the credentialed technicians who do this work. Inspection results go into a written report with pass, service-required, or fail-and-lockout status for each item. Any fail item takes the lift out of service until corrected. A pass grants a fresh 12-month cycle. Municipal fleet operators typically build the annual inspection into their fiscal-year budget as a fixed line item — roughly $250 to $400 per lift depending on shop location and inspection complexity. Compared to the cost of an uninspected lift causing an injury, that is trivial. Compared to the risk-management value your municipal insurance carrier assigns to certified inspection records, it may actually reduce your insurance premium.
