A quick-lube operation built around a pit or drive-on ramps handles oil, filters, and fluid exchanges beautifully. The trouble starts the day the manager decides to stop turning away brake and wheel bearing work. Bearing service means the wheels have to come off, the hub has to be accessible at a comfortable working height, and the tech needs to be able to swing a slide hammer without cracking his knuckles on a joist. None of that happens over a pit. We have watched more than one east-central Iowa franchise lose thousands a month in referred-out work simply because there was no place to get a vehicle off the ground.

That is the moment a two-post enters the conversation. It converts a single-service bay into a general repair bay, and the revenue math is usually straightforward: a handful of bearing, hub, and brake jobs a week covers the monthly payment on a mid-capacity unit with room left over. The operators who do best treat the lift as a revenue line item rather than an expense. They calculate hours billed per bay per week before and after, and they staff for it. The ones who struggle bolt in a lift, never train the crew past oil changes, and then wonder why the asset sits idle. Equipment does not generate revenue. A trained tech standing under it does.

Equipment tiers: what your money actually buys

Broadly, there are three tiers. The entry tier — think 9,000 to 10,000 lb asymmetric units from value brands — lands in the low four figures and is genuinely fine for a hobby garage or a light-duty bay that sees a few vehicles a week. The middle tier, roughly 10,000 to 12,000 lb from Rotary or Challenger, is where most commercial shops land: heavier columns, better carriage bearings, thicker arm castings, and a parts pipeline that will still exist in fifteen years. The top tier adds 15,000 lb capacity, three-stage arms, and features like automatic arm restraints and single-point lock release.

For a quick-lube doing passenger cars, half-ton pickups, and the occasional three-quarter-ton, a 10,000 or 12,000 lb symmetric or versymmetric unit is the sweet spot. We steer people away from buying more capacity than they need, because capacity costs money and the real constraint is usually ceiling height, not weight. One operator we worked with north of Cedar Rapids was convinced he needed a 15,000 lb machine because he occasionally saw a dually. In practice the dually came in twice a year and did not fit his bay door anyway. The costs nobody quotes you on the phone

If you have a forklift, you save the accessorial charge. If you do not, plan for it. Second is concrete. Manufacturer specs generally call for four to six inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured, with adequate distance to any expansion joint or slab edge. We core-test when there is any doubt. Remediation — sawing out a section and pouring proper footings — is a real line item, typically comparable to a decent chunk of the lift price itself. Equipment financing through a third-party lender is the most common: 24 to 60 month terms, a modest down payment, and rates that vary considerably with credit profile and time in business. A franchise with three years of statements gets very different terms than a first-year independent. Section 179 depreciation matters here too — a shop that places equipment in service before year end can often write off a substantial portion in the same tax year, which changes the effective cost meaningfully. The second bucket is a business line of credit, which is more flexible but usually carries a higher rate. The third is a lease-to-own structure with a buyout at the end. We do not underwrite financing ourselves, but we work with operators constantly and we will happily structure the quote so the lender sees the complete project — equipment, freight, install, and concrete work — rather than just the box price. Lenders fund projects, not shopping carts, and a complete quote gets approved faster. One thing we push hard on: do not finance a 2 post car lift over sixty months if the unit you picked is an entry-tier machine with a five-year practical service life in a commercial bay. Match the term to the equipment life or you will be making payments on scrap.

Payment schedule, deposits, and how a project actually sequences

Here is the timeline we run for a typical east-central Iowa install. Week one: site visit or detailed photos and measurements, ceiling height, slab thickness, door clearance, and panel capacity. We confirm whether a clearfloor overhead unit fits or whether the ceiling forces a baseplate configuration. Plenty of buildings with eleven or twelve foot ceilings can still take an overhead model; plenty of others with a loft on one side and a wall on the other cannot, and baseplate is the honest answer.

Week two: quote issued, deposit collected, order placed. Deposits on commercial equipment typically run a third of the equipment value, with the balance due at delivery or on completion depending on the financing structure. Weeks three through six: manufacturing lead time and freight transit, which fluctuates by brand and season. Delivery day: unload, stage, and — if concrete remediation is needed — that happens before the lift arrives, not after. Install itself is usually a single day for a straightforward two-post, sometimes a day and a half if the electrical is not ready. Then we run the unit through full cycles, verify lock engagement on both columns, set arm restraints, and walk the crew through daily and monthly inspection points. Wheel bearing work and the features that pay for themselves

Bearing and hub service is hard on a lift in specific ways. Wheels come off, which means the vehicle’s weight distribution never changes but the tech’s working posture does — a lot of time spent at hub height, pulling on things. That argues for a few features worth paying for. Three-stage front arms let you get pad placement right on short-wheelbase cars and long trucks alike without repositioning. Drop-end arms matter for low-clearance vehicles, which show up more often than you would think even at a quick-lube. Automatic arm restraints keep an arm from swinging while a tech is leaning into a hub with a puller.

The other feature that earns its keep is lift height. A unit that only goes to 69 inches of pad height forces short techs to work overhead and tall techs to stoop — neither is efficient. Look for maximum rise in the 72 to 78 inch range if your ceiling supports it. And pay attention to column spacing and drive-through clearance, because a bay that requires a three-point turn to position every vehicle costs you minutes on every ticket. Minutes on every ticket, across a year of quick-lube volume, is real money. We have seen shops recover the price difference between a bargain unit and a properly specified one purely in throughput within eighteen months. That is the argument we make when someone tells us they do not want to spend more than the bare minimum.

Service, parts availability, and total cost of ownership

The purchase price is a snapshot. Total cost of ownership is the movie. A two-post has a small number of wear items — hydraulic cylinder seals, equalization cables, sheaves, lock dogs, arm restraint gears, and pads — and how easy those are to source determines what the machine costs you over a decade. Rotary and Challenger parts are stocked, cross-referenced, and available. Off-brand units imported under a name that changes every few years are a different story: we regularly get calls about a lift that will not raise, motor running, fluid present, no leak, and the answer is a specific internal valve or seal kit that simply is not available for that model anymore.

Budget roughly one service visit a year for a commercial two-post: cable tension check and adjustment, lock function test, fluid level and condition, anchor torque verification, and pad inspection. That annual visit costs a small fraction of a single cylinder replacement and catches the problems that turn into dropped vehicles.
