Adding a 2 post car lift to a quick-lube operation changes the business model, and the operators who understand that ahead of time do a lot better than the ones who just want a hole-free bay. A franchise owner outside Sioux City called us about exactly this last spring. He runs a three-bay express lube with pits, and he was losing every differential fluid service, transfer case job, and gear oil change to the general repair shop down the road — because you can’t reach a rear diff cover comfortably from a pit, and his techs hated trying. He wanted one bay converted and he wanted a real number, not a brochure figure. So we built him one, line by line, and this is what it looked like.

Why a Quick-Lube Bay Is a Different Animal

Express lube buildings are designed around throughput, and that design fights you when you try to add a lift. The bays are often narrower than a general-repair bay. The floors frequently have pits, trenches, or drains running exactly where you’d want to anchor a column. And the ceiling is sometimes low, because nobody planning an oil-change building imagined a truck going eight feet in the air.

The Sioux City shop had one bay at the end of the building that had been converted to a flat floor years earlier when the pit was filled. That sounded like good news and turned out to be the biggest question mark in the whole project. Filled pits are notoriously inconsistent — sometimes the fill is properly compacted with a reinforced pour on top, and sometimes it’s rubble and four inches of skim coat that will not hold an anchor under load. We cored it. In this case the previous owner had done it right: engineered fill, rebar mat, and just over seven inches of concrete rated well above the 3,000 PSI minimum. That single core sample, which cost almost nothing, was the difference between a straightforward install and a cut-and-pour that would have added several thousand dollars and a week of downtime. Symmetric vs Asymmetric: The Choice That Actually Matters Daily

This is the question we get most often and the one most people get wrong, so here’s the plain version. On a symmetric lift, the two columns face each other directly and the four arms are equal length. The vehicle sits centered between the columns, roughly 50/50 front to back. On an asymmetric lift, the columns are rotated inward — usually about 30 degrees — and the front arms are shorter than the rear arms. The vehicle sits back further, so the door openings clear the columns.

For a quick-lube operation, the answer is almost always asymmetric, and the reason is door swing. Your techs are in and out of the driver’s seat constantly — starting the engine to check transmission fluid, cycling the key, moving the vehicle in and out fast. On a symmetric setup with a mid-size sedan, that B-pillar lands right at the column and the door hits it. Ten seconds of annoyance, forty times a day, six days a week. Asymmetric fixes that. The tradeoff is that asymmetric arms require more attention to load placement — the vehicle’s center of gravity has to sit correctly relative to the columns, and a tech who loads a truck like it’s a symmetric lift can create an unstable condition. Symmetric still wins for consistently heavy, long-wheelbase work: dual-wheel trucks, vans, and anything where you want maximum stability and don’t care about doors. Some newer models split the difference with adjustable columns or versymmetric arm geometry that lets you run either configuration. For a mixed passenger-car and light-truck lube business, asymmetric is the pick.

Line Item One: The Equipment Itself

Equipment is the number everybody fixates on, and it’s usually 55 to 70 percent of the total project. For a 2 post car lift in the 10,000 lb class — which covers virtually every vehicle a quick-lube sees, including three-quarter-ton pickups — you’re looking at a broad range depending on brand tier.

At the entry end, an Atlas or comparable value-line asymmetric unit lands in the low-to-mid four figures. Mid-tier BendPak models sit meaningfully above that. Rotary and Challenger commercial-grade units run higher still, often close to double the entry price. What are you buying with the difference? Three things, mainly. Steel gauge and column construction — the premium units use heavier plate and better carriage bearings, which shows up as less flex and slower wear over a twenty-year life. Parts availability — Rotary and Challenger will have a cylinder, a cable set, and a lock assembly for your lift two decades from now, and value brands frequently won’t. And warranty depth, including structural coverage that actually gets honored. The Sioux City operator went mid-tier. His volume is high but his loads are light and consistent, and he made the reasonable call that he didn’t need 18,000 lb columns to hoist Camrys. We agreed. Where we pushed back was on the cheapest option — for a commercial bay running forty cycles a day, entry-line hardware is false economy.

Line Item Two: Freight, Rigging, and Getting It Off the Truck

A two-post ships as roughly 1,600 to 2,200 pounds of crated steel on a flatbed or in a van trailer, and freight is the cost people forget. Depending on distance from the warehouse and whether you’re on a main lane, expect several hundred dollars, sometimes more for remote destinations. Some vendors bake it into the price and some don’t — always ask which.

The bigger variable is unloading. If you have a forklift with at least 4,000 lb capacity and a driver who knows how to handle a long crate, you’re done in fifteen minutes and you skip the liftgate charge entirely. We’ve had customers with forklifts save a few hundred dollars just by saying so at order time. If you don’t have equipment, you need liftgate service, which sets the crate on the ground at the back of the truck — and then you still have to move 2,000 pounds across your lot. Pipe rollers and a come-along work. So does renting a telehandler for two hours. What does not work is six guys and enthusiasm; we’ve seen a column come off a pallet jack and crack a slab. The Sioux City shop had a forklift on site for pallet handling, so their freight line stayed modest and the crate went from truck to bay in one move. Plan this before delivery day, not during it.

Line Item Three: Concrete and Electrical Prep

These two are the silent budget killers. On the concrete side, if your core comes back good — minimum four inches of 3,000 PSI for most 10,000 lb units, more for higher capacity, and always check the manufacturer’s spec sheet rather than a rule of thumb — your concrete cost is zero. If it comes back thin, cracked, or sitting on bad fill, you’re cutting out a section and pouring a reinforced pad, which runs into the low thousands and adds 28 days of cure time before you can anchor. That’s not a delay you can shortcut; anchoring into green concrete is how columns pull out.

Electrical is more predictable but still real. Most two-post power units run either 110V single-phase or 220V single-phase, and the 220V option lifts noticeably faster, which matters when you’re cycling a bay dozens of times a day. Running a dedicated 220V circuit with the right breaker and a disconnect near the column typically costs a few hundred to about a thousand depending on panel distance and whether your panel has capacity. The Sioux City job needed a new 30-amp circuit run about sixty feet, plus a subpanel slot. Their electrician handled it the week before delivery for a middling four-figure total across both the lift circuit and some unrelated lighting they bundled in. Budget for it. We’ve watched more than one project stall because the lift was standing in the bay and nothing could power it.

Line Item Four: Installation, Certification, and the First Year

Professional installation of a 2 post car lift generally runs in the high hundreds to low thousands depending on complexity, travel, and whether shimming or floor prep is involved. A clean install on level, adequate concrete with power already run is a one-day job for a two-person crew. Add a sloped floor, an awkward overhead run, or an anchor that hits rebar and finds nothing, and the day stretches.

Some people install their own, and we’re not going to pretend it’s impossible — the manuals are decent and a mechanically capable owner with a rotary hammer, a torque wrench, and a good level can do it. What you give up is the certification paperwork, the plumb verification under load, and someone whose name is on it if a column isn’t square. For a commercial operation with employees and an insurance carrier, that documentation has value beyond the install itself. We also strongly recommend an annual ALI-style inspection after year one; it runs a couple hundred dollars and it catches cable stretch, lock wear, and anchor loosening before they become incidents. All in, the Sioux City project landed in the mid five figures for equipment plus freight plus electrical plus install — and the operator told us in month four that the differential and gear oil services alone had covered better than a third of it. Those are high-margin jobs that require nothing but access, and access is exactly what he’d been missing. What We’d Tell Any Lube Operator Before They Order

Three things. First, measure your lowest obstruction, not your ceiling peak. Lube bays are full of reels, lighting, and door tracks hanging below the deck. A clear-floor overhead model needs meaningful headroom above the vehicle’s roof; if you’re under twelve feet to the lowest hanging item, look hard at a baseplate model instead. Baseplate units run the hydraulic and equalizer lines through a floor plate between the columns, which means you can install under a low ceiling — the tradeoff is a small bump your creeper and drain pan have to clear.

Second, don’t buy capacity for the vehicle you have; buy it for the vehicle that’s going to roll in. A 9,000 lb unit covers cars and half-tons fine, but the day a loaded three-quarter-ton diesel with a service body pulls into your bay, you’ll want the margin. Stepping from 9,000 to 10,000 or 12,000 costs a fraction of what the regret costs. Third, ask about parts availability before you ask about price. The single most common call we take is somebody with an orphaned lift that won’t raise, and there’s no replacement cylinder or lock assembly on earth that fits it.
