A quick-lube operator in West Des Moines called us last year with a spreadsheet already open and one question: does a used 2 post car lift ever make financial sense when you’re adding alignment and brake work to an oil-change business? He had three drive-on pits doing volume, one open bay in the back with a decent slab, and a plan to start capturing the alignment and suspension work he’d been handing to the shop across the parking lot for years. He’d found a couple of used units on auction sites for a fraction of new money and wanted us to talk him into or out of them. We walked the numbers with him line by line, and the breakdown below is essentially that conversation.

Why a Quick-Lube Adds a Two-Post at All

Pits are fantastic for throughput on oil, filters, and fluid checks. They’re nearly useless for anything that requires the wheels off the ground. A pit operator can’t pull a rotor, can’t service a wheel bearing, and can’t do the suspension inspection work that leads to real ticket sizes. Every quick-lube owner we’ve worked with eventually notices that the same customer who paid a small ticket for an oil change just spent five times that on brakes somewhere else that afternoon.

The bay in the back was already there, already heated, and already had a floor drain. His plan was staged: put a lift in, start with brakes and tires and suspension inspections, and if the volume justified it, add alignment equipment in year two. That staging matters to the used-versus-new decision, because alignment work has requirements that general repair doesn’t. He wasn’t buying a 2 post car lift to do oil changes faster. He was buying capability his pits fundamentally cannot provide, and that reframed the whole budget conversation from cost to revenue per bay hour.

What Used Actually Costs Once You Add It Up

The two used units he found were priced attractively. One was a mid-1990s clearfloor overhead unit from a dealership closure about four hours away; the other was a baseplate model from a shop that had gone out of business. Sticker on both was somewhere in the low four figures, roughly a third of a comparable new unit.

Then we added lines. Rigging and loading at the seller’s site, because a two-post that’s been anchored for twenty-five years does not walk out on its own. Freight for two columns, a top beam, and a power unit. New anchors, because nobody reuses anchors. A full set of equalization cables, which is the single most common hidden cost on used equipment — old cables are the number one reason we get called out to used installs. New hydraulic hoses and fittings, because twenty-year-old rubber under 2,500 psi is a liability, not a savings. Fresh fluid. Then labor for an install that takes longer than a new install because nothing is documented, the hardware bag is missing, and the arm restraint gears need inspection. By the time we finished, the used clearfloor unit landed within about fifteen percent of a new entry-level 10,000 lb model, without a warranty and without an ANSI/ALI certification label. That’s the math that ends most used conversations.

When Used Genuinely Wins

We’re not against used equipment and we service plenty of it. Used makes sense in three specific situations, and it’s worth being honest about them. First, when the unit is recent — under about eight years old — from a known brand, and you can inspect it standing and cycling before it comes apart. A lift you watched go up and down under load tells you more than any listing photo.

Second, when parts availability is certain. A used Rotary or Challenger two-post is supportable indefinitely because cylinders, cables, lock assemblies, and sheaves are all stocked. A used lift from a brand that no longer exists, or an import model with no parts channel, is a paperweight the day something breaks. We get calls every month from shops with an unbranded lift and no way to source a cylinder. Third, when you’re buying a second or third 2 post car lift for overflow rather than your only revenue-producing bay. A used unit that sits idle two days a week is a manageable risk. A used unit that is your only lift and goes down on a Tuesday morning with a customer’s car in the air is not. This operator’s back bay was going to be his brake and suspension bay — his only one — so we steered him to new.

The Alignment Question Changes the Spec

Here’s where the plan for year two reshaped the year-one purchase. Alignment work on a two-post is possible but demands specifics. You need rolling jack plates or a way to unload the suspension at ride height, you need repeatable positioning, and above all you need the lift to be dead level and dead plumb, permanently.

A general-service two-post can be a quarter inch out of level between arms and nobody notices. An alignment rack cannot. That pushed us toward a new unit for a boring but decisive reason: level installation on a new unit comes with documented shim procedures, factory tolerances, and our warranty on the work. On a used lift with worn cable sheaves and stretched cables, holding both carriages at matched height across the full travel is a fight you keep re-fighting. We also talked about whether a two-post was the right platform for alignment at all versus a four-post alignment rack down the road. His answer was space — he had one bay, not two. So we specced a new 10,000 lb asymmetric model with alignment-capable arm geometry and left room in the layout for turnplates and a rear slip plate setup later. The 2 post car lift he bought will do brakes now and support basic alignment with the right accessories added in phase two.

The Line-Item Cost Breakdown

Here’s how the delivered-and-installed number came together, in tiers rather than exact figures because freight and concrete work vary by site. Equipment: a new 10,000 lb clearfloor asymmetric two-post from a major brand sits in the mid four figures to low five figures depending on column height, arm configuration, and included adapters. Freight to central Iowa on a common-carrier flatbed adds a few hundred dollars, less if you have a dock or a forklift and more if you need liftgate service.

Anchors and hardware are included with new equipment. Installation labor for a straightforward anchor-and-plumb job on adequate concrete is a single-day tier; add a half day if the slab needs cutting. Concrete work, if required, is the wild card — his back bay measured five and a half inches of good pour, so he skipped it entirely, but a shop needing two footings cut and repoured should budget more than the freight cost and allow a week of cure time. Electrical was his second largest line after the lift: he had no 220V drop in that bay and a licensed electrician ran a dedicated circuit. Accessories rounded it out — a truck adapter set, tall stack pads, and a spare cable set on the shelf. Total, all in, landed in the range he’d mentally budgeted for a used unit plus surprises.

Throughput Math and Payback

Quick-lube operators think in bay minutes, so we ran payback that way instead of in vague ROI language. Brakes on a common front-wheel-drive sedan is roughly a one-hour bay job for a competent tech with the car in the air. Tire rotations paired with an oil change take minutes and can be sold at the counter without moving the vehicle to another shop.

He estimated conservatively — two brake jobs and six rotations a week from customers already walking through his door. At his labor rate, the equipment and install paid back inside the first year, and that was before counting the suspension and wheel bearing work that shows up once a tech can actually see the underside of a car with the wheels hanging. Twelve months in, his numbers ran ahead of the estimate, mostly because inspection findings on lifted vehicles convert far better than findings called out from a pit. He’s now scoped the alignment phase and asked us to quote turnplates and a rear slip plate kit. The lesson we’d pass to any quick-lube owner considering a 2 post car lift: the payback isn’t in the jobs you already sell, it’s in the jobs you currently refuse. Buying Advice We’d Give Any Shop Owner

Start with a tape measure and a concrete check, not a browser tab. Measure lowest obstruction height across the whole bay footprint, not just the center. Measure door width and the approach path. Find out slab thickness with an actual core or drill test, because “it’s probably five inches” turns into three and a half often enough that we treat every unverified number as suspect. Those three facts eliminate most of the models you were considering and save you from a return freight bill.

Then decide honestly whether this is your only lift or a spare. If it’s your only one, buy new, buy a brand with a stocked parts channel, and get a certified install with documented anchor torque and level readings. If it’s your third bay and you’re comfortable with risk, a recent used unit from a known brand can be a smart buy — just budget cables, hoses, anchors, and fluid into the purchase price from day one rather than discovering them later. And whatever you buy, get the electrical done properly by a licensed electrician on a dedicated circuit. We’ve replaced more power units killed by undersized wiring and voltage drop than by mechanical wear. A well-installed 2 post car lift is twenty-year equipment. A poorly installed one is a service call waiting to happen, and we’d rather sell you the right thing once than fix the wrong thing twice.
