A restoration shop’s needs from a 2 post car lift are different from a fleet garage’s and different from a home hobbyist’s. Restoration jobs are long — a rotisserie build can sit on a lift for weeks at a time — and the vehicles are often older, heavier in unexpected places, and unforgiving of pad-placement mistakes. Where Restoration Shops Differ From General Service

Restoration is a slow-cycle business. A general service shop might turn a bay eight to twelve times a day. A restoration shop might have a single vehicle on a lift for two weeks straight. That changes what matters. Cycle-rate ratings become less important than long-hold behavior — how does the lift handle sitting at working height for days? How do the cylinder seals behave under continuous load? How do the safety locks hold up when they’re engaged for a month? Those are the questions restoration shops need to ask, and they’re not the questions residential or general-service lift specs typically answer.

Older vehicles are also different loads. A 60s muscle car has body-on-frame construction with pad points at specific frame locations. A 70s pickup is heavier than you’d guess because of the steel gauge and body materials. A prewar restoration has lift points that don’t match any modern reference and need custom pad adapters. The techs need to understand the vehicle before they lift it. Beyond the vehicles, restoration also puts weird loads on lifts — a car with the engine and transmission removed is much lighter and might sit high because the front is unweighted. A car with a bare frame is different again. The pad geometry has to accommodate all of it. That’s why we push restoration shops toward the flexible end of the lift market.

Step One: Set Your Budget Honestly

Budget for a restoration-shop 2-post starts at a good mid-tier commercial-grade unit and can run into premium territory with heavy-duty cylinders and enhanced pad options. Install adds another meaningful sum depending on concrete work, electrical run, and anchor requirements. Freight is regional. Total delivered-and-installed cost for a good restoration 2-post lands in the mid five-figure range for a commercial-grade setup. What we tell shops shopping the low end is: don’t. A residential-grade lift at bargain prices will get you two or three years of restoration duty before something structural fails.

A budget import is only marginally better. The right budget floor for a restoration shop is the mid-tier commercial market. Above that, the premium models offer real advantages — heavier cylinders, better cable warranty, higher hold rating for long jobs — but the marginal value drops after a certain point. Sweet spot is a mid-commercial installed price. If your shop budget can’t hit that number, our advice is to wait, save, and buy right rather than buy cheap and replace. A cheap 2 post car lift used for restoration ends up being more expensive than a good one because the replacement cycle is short and the downtime while you replace is worse for a slow-cycle business than for a fast one. Budget honestly. Buy once.

Step Two: Choose Capacity by the Heaviest Vehicle You’ll Rebuild

Capacity is straightforward. Look at the heaviest vehicle you plan to rebuild in the next ten years and add 25 percent. Most restoration work is on vehicles under 5,000 pounds, so a 10,000-pound capacity 2-post is plenty. But if you know you’ll be building trucks, heavy sedans, or vintage delivery vehicles, step up to 12,000 or 15,000. Overbuying capacity doesn’t hurt — the lift performs better under nominal load — but underbuying is dangerous. We had a restoration shop in southern Iowa call us three months into an ownership cycle because the 10,000-pound lift they bought had visible flex under a heavy classic they’d underestimated.

That car ended up being closer to 5,500 pounds fully loaded. The lift wasn’t structurally at risk but the flex was uncomfortable to work under. They upgraded to 12,000 pounds. Lesson learned. What restoration shops shouldn’t do is buy a 20,000-pound lift for one heavy vehicle every three years. The bigger lifts have wider column spacing, taller safety bars, and slower cycle times that get in the way of daily work. Match the lift to your normal load with headroom, not to the outlier. If the outlier only shows up once every few years, farm it out or bring in a heavy-duty rental setup for the job. The 2 post car lift you use every day should be the right size for the 90 percent case, not the 5 percent case.

Step Three: Symmetric or Asymmetric for a 2 Post Car Lift in Restoration

For restoration, we lean asymmetric on smaller-vehicle shops (60s and 70s cars, sports cars, sedans) and symmetric on heavier-vehicle shops (trucks, wagons, prewar sedans). The asymmetric layout gives better door swing for smaller cars, which matters when you’re in and out of the driver seat repeatedly during a build. Symmetric handles heavier and less-balanced vehicles better. If your shop mixes both, versymmetric is the flexible answer. On a 2 post car lift used for restoration, arm-placement flexibility is more valuable than in a general service bay because you’re often lifting cars with modifications, missing components, or unusual pad points.

The arms need to reach where they need to reach. We’ve had restoration customers who bought a symmetric lift and then wished they’d gone asymmetric within a year, and vice versa. Getting this right at spec time saves you a decade of small annoyances. The way we help shops decide is by walking through a hypothetical week of jobs — what vehicles are on the lift, in what order, and what work is being done. Then we look at the pad points for each one and check them against the arm reach and column position. Ten minutes of that walk-through eliminates 90 percent of arm-style regret. Decide before you buy, not after. This is a spec choice you live with for a long time.

Step Four: Clear-Floor or Overhead for Long Jobs

Clear-floor 2-posts have the safety cables running through an overhead crossbar. Overhead 2-posts have the cables and cylinders in a top beam. For general service, either works. For restoration, we lean toward clear-floor for one reason: the underside workspace is completely open. When a car sits on a lift for two weeks during a body-off restoration, tripping over a floor cable is a real risk, and clear-floor eliminates it. The tradeoff is that clear-floor requires higher ceiling clearance because the overhead crossbar adds height. If your shop has 13 or 14 feet, clear-floor is the easy choice.

Under 12 feet, overhead may be your only option. We’ve spec’d both in the Iowa Great Lakes region — one restoration shop in a former ag building had a 16-foot ceiling and went clear-floor with a premium overhead beam that even added lighting. Another shop in a repurposed downtown building had an 11-foot ceiling and went overhead because it was the only geometry that fit. Both work. Neither is inherently better. Match the design to your building. On the shop-specific configuration side, we always recommend restoration customers add pad-height extenders to their spec order. Older vehicles often need taller pads to reach frame rails, and having a set on the shelf saves time when the pad points don’t line up with standard reach.

Step Five: Brand and Model Comparison for Restoration Duty

The brand comparison for restoration duty comes down to four we install regularly: Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas. Rotary and Challenger sit at the commercial end. BendPak and Atlas offer strong residential and light-commercial lines. For a restoration shop specifically, we typically recommend Rotary or Challenger — the cylinders are heavier, the cables are longer-warranty, and the parts availability is better across a ten-year ownership horizon. That said, BendPak’s commercial line is strong and worth considering if the price difference matters. Atlas has grown its lineup and has good options in the mid-tier commercial range.

Where we won’t send restoration shops is to the discount imports without U.S. parts networks. When a cylinder fails on a lift that has a car sitting on it for a three-week build, you need parts in days, not weeks. That’s the operational reality of restoration service. Every 2 post car lift we sell has a parts operation behind it. That’s a hard rule for us and it should be one for you too. Ask any seller you talk to where their warranty parts ship from and how quickly they can move. If the answer is a warehouse in another state with a two-week lead time, walk away. Step Six: Brake Service, Rotor Swaps, and the Final Configuration Check

Brake service and rotor swaps are the everyday jobs a restoration bay runs. Old drums come off. New rotors and calipers go on. The 2-post has to make this easy. What that means in configuration terms is: adequate arm reach for older vehicles with unusual wheelbases, pad clearance for larger drum brakes, and enough overhead room for the tech to swing a rotor freely at wheel height. On most restoration builds, you’ll pull all four corners multiple times during the build — first for original inspection, then for teardown, then for reassembly, then for adjustment. Every one of those cycles benefits from a well-configured lift.

The final configuration check we do with restoration customers before they order is a paper walk-through of the top three cars on their build queue. Weight, wheelbase, pad points, ride height, and any modifications. Then we cross-check against the spec sheet of the lift they’re considering. If everything lines up, we order. If something doesn’t, we adjust the spec or change lifts. That’s the decision tree in action.
