A restoration shop owner in southeast Iowa called us last spring with a fair question: he had a budget in the low four figures, a shop with a loft on one side, and a 1966 project car sitting on jack stands where a 2 post car lift should be. He wanted to know whether to chase a used unit off an auction site or stretch for something new with a warranty. We install and service lifts across Iowa and stock parts for every major brand, so we get this call constantly — and the honest answer is that it depends on four things, in order: your concrete, your ceiling, your arm configuration, and whether parts still exist for the thing you’re buying. Start with the concrete, not the price tag

Every decision tree for lift buying starts underground. We have watched more deals fall apart over a slab than over money. A restoration shop in a converted machine shed or an older downtown building in southeast Iowa often has four inches of unreinforced concrete poured decades ago, sometimes over gravel that has settled unevenly. Manufacturers typically want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb clearfloor unit, and some baseplate models ask for more because the anchor loading concentrates differently. If you do not know what you have, core it or drill a test hole in the spot where a column would land. It costs almost nothing and it decides everything.

Here is why this comes before the used-versus-new question. If your slab needs a cut-and-pour footing pad — and in older Iowa shops it frequently does — that expense lands in the same budget bucket you were going to spend on the lift itself. A customer we worked with near Ottumwa discovered his floor was closer to three inches with no rebar. He ended up putting the money into two properly sized footings and buying a lighter-duty unit rather than the reverse, which was the right call. Concrete failure under a loaded column is not a repairable mistake. Buying a bargain used 2 post car lift and bolting it into questionable concrete is how a project car becomes scrap metal and a shop owner becomes a defendant.

Ceiling height decides clearfloor or baseplate

The second branch is vertical. A clearfloor two-post design carries its equalization cables and hydraulic lines through an overhead beam, which keeps the bay floor completely open — a real advantage when you are dragging a transmission jack or a rotisserie under a body shell. But that beam needs headroom. Most 10,000 lb clearfloor models want somewhere around 12 feet of usable ceiling, and taller versions want more. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak: door tracks, sprinkler heads, light fixtures, and radiant tube heaters all count.

Baseplate models run the lines through a low channel at floor level, which drops the total height requirement significantly. We spec these constantly for restoration guys working under 10 or 11 foot ceilings, and for anyone who has a loft, mezzanine, or drop beam on one side of the bay. The tradeoff is that you drive over that channel and you occasionally kick a creeper into it. For metal work — where you spend hours moving between the floor and a raised car — most of our restoration customers say they stop noticing it within a week. One shop in the Fairfield area went baseplate specifically because the overhead sprinkler main was untouchable, and they have not regretted it. If your ceiling is genuinely tight, a mid-rise scissor may be the better tool, but you lose the ability to stand under the car, which is the whole point of a 2 post car lift for bodywork.

Symmetric or asymmetric for restoration work

Arm configuration matters more on restoration work than on general repair, and it is one of the specs used-lift shoppers routinely ignore. A symmetric lift has columns facing each other directly with four arms of equal length, so the vehicle sits centered between the posts and roughly half the weight lands ahead of the columns and half behind. That geometry handles long-wheelbase vehicles, pickups, and the heavy front ends of full-size American iron very well. It also means the doors open into the columns, which is a nuisance on a daily driver but nearly irrelevant on a body shell with no doors hung yet.

Asymmetric designs rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and pair short front arms with long rear arms, sliding the vehicle rearward so the driver’s door clears the post. That is a genuine comfort win on a shop doing constant in-and-out service. For restoration, though, we usually lean symmetric or a versymmetric-style unit that can do both, because you are lifting oddball chassis, bare frames, and unibody shells whose pickup points do not follow modern spec. Whatever you choose, verify the pad height at its lowest setting. Low-slung project cars and lowered street rods will not clear standard pads, and drop-end or telescoping screw pads plus adapter stacks are what make a 2 post car lift usable on a car sitting two inches off the deck.

The honest case for buying used

We are a parts distributor as well as an installer, so we are not going to pretend used equipment is always a mistake. There are good used lifts in Iowa. Dealership consolidations, shop closures, and fleet upgrades put solid Rotary and Challenger columns on the market regularly, and a well-maintained commercial-grade unit from a name brand will outlast a bargain import that was new in the crate. If you find a 20-year-old Rotary SPO-series in a shop that changed the fluid and greased the carriages, that is often a smarter buy than a no-name unit at the same money.

What makes used work is parts availability. Before you hand over cash, find the serial and model plate and confirm you can still get cables, sheaves, slider blocks, arm restraint gears, lock dogs, and cylinder seals. We field calls every week from someone who bought a cheap used lift and then found out the manufacturer folded and nobody makes the equalizer cable in that length. That lift is now a very heavy sculpture. Also budget for a full going-over: cables and hoses are wear items, anchor bolts should be replaced not reused, and a used 2 post car lift with unknown history deserves a load test and an ALI-style inspection before a car ever goes on it. Factor those costs in and compare the real number, not the sticker.

When new is clearly the right money

New wins on three fronts: warranty, certification, and the fact that nothing on it is a mystery. If your restoration work is commercial — customer cars, invoices, insurance — a new certified unit is much easier to defend. Insurers and, in some cases, local inspectors care about third-party certification, and a decades-old lift with a missing data plate is a conversation you do not want to have after an incident. New also means current safety hardware: automatic arm restraints, single-point lock releases, padded overhead shutoff bars on clearfloor models, and lock ladders in good condition.

There is also a practical resale argument. A new 10,000 lb unit from a brand with a real dealer network holds value in a way a mystery lift does not, and if you outgrow it or move shops, you can sell it. On price tiers: entry-level home and light-commercial two-post units generally sit in the low-to-mid four figures, mid-grade commercial equipment lands in the mid four figures, and heavier or specialty configurations climb from there before freight and install. Compare that against a used purchase plus freight, plus rigging, plus new cables and anchors, plus an inspection — the gap narrows fast. We have quoted plenty of jobs where the customer walked in wanting used and left ordering new because the delta on a properly refurbished 2 post car lift was a few hundred dollars.

Installation, freight, and the stuff people forget

The line item that surprises restoration shops most often is not the lift — it is everything around it. A two-post ships on a freight truck, usually strapped to a heavily loaded pallet with columns in the neighborhood of 700 to 900 pounds apiece. If you have a forklift or a skid loader with forks, unloading is a half-hour job. If you do not, you need a liftgate delivery or a rigging service, and that changes the freight quote. We ask about this on every order because a truck sitting in your driveway with no way to unload is a bad afternoon.

Then there is power. Most 10,000 lb two-post power units run 208-230V single phase, which many older Iowa farm shops and downtown buildings do not have run to the bay. Budget for an electrician. You also need anchor bolts driven to spec with a proper torque check, columns plumbed and shimmed, cables tensioned so the carriages rise evenly, and the locks cycled and verified through the full travel. Either way, do not skip the commissioning checks. A 2 post car lift that was set up in a hurry will tell you about it eventually, usually at the worst moment.

Keeping it alive: parts, service, and inspection

Once the lift is in, the job shifts to maintenance, and this is where a shop’s relationship with a parts source matters. Two-post lifts are simple machines with a short list of wear items: equalization cables, sheaves and sheave pins, slider blocks and wear pads, lock dogs and their springs, arm restraint gears, hydraulic hoses, and cylinder seals. Cables are the big one. They stretch, they fray at the sheave, and they are the reason a carriage drifts out of level. Inspect them monthly, grease the columns per the manual, and replace cables in pairs, never one at a time.

It turned out to be a stuck check valve in the power unit, a cheap part and a one-hour fix, not the four-figure replacement the owner feared. That kind of diagnosis is why we tell people to buy where someone answers the phone. Have your 2 post car lift inspected annually, keep a log, and it will hold up for decades of metal work.
