2 Post Car Lift First-Year Ownership: RV and Trailer Shop

Alignment Machine For Sale Boca Raton, FL

Contact Us

An RV and trailer service shop in southwest Iowa reached out to us last year looking for their first 2 post car lift. Their techs had been rolling around on creepers under fifth-wheel tow combos for a decade, and the crew was worn out. We walked them through capacity, arm design, ALI Gold certification, and a realistic first-year ownership picture. Twelve months later they run the 2 post car lift daily on exhaust and driveline work. Here is what that first year actually looked like, from the initial quote through service intervals.

Why an RV and Trailer Shop Chose a 2 Post Car Lift

The shop’s main work is exhaust replacement, U-joint changes, driveline balancing, and brake lines on pickup trucks paired with fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers. A four post drive-on would have blocked underbody access exactly where they needed it. A 2 post car lift, on the other hand, hoists the vehicle by frame or pinch weld and leaves the entire underside open. That is the whole point of a two post design, and it is why every commercial service bay we install in Iowa runs at least one. The owner had shopped a used unit locally, but the seller could not produce install paperwork, anchor torque records, or an ALI serial plate. We recommended a new ALI Gold Rotary SPOA10 with three-stage front arms, and the numbers penciled out inside their budget once we bundled delivery and install.

Sizing Capacity for Mixed Vehicle Work

They asked whether a 10,000 lb 2 post car lift would cover them or if they needed to jump to a 12K. We ran the math on their heaviest regular vehicle, a diesel 3/4 ton pickup at roughly 8,200 lb loaded with tools. Ten thousand pounds of rated capacity gives a healthy safety margin at about 22 percent, which is the range we like to see for shops that do not know exactly what pulls in on a given morning. Going to a 12,000 lb model added roughly ten to fifteen percent to the sticker and required a taller ceiling clearance they did not have. The 10K SPOA10 fit their bay, matched their real workload, and preserved the option to occasionally do a lighter one ton. Sizing a 2 post car lift is not about picking the biggest number, it is about matching capacity to your regular vehicles with margin.

What ALI Gold Certification Actually Means

ALI Gold is the third-party certification from the Automotive Lift Institute confirming a 2 post car lift meets the ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety standard. That means an independent lab tested the structural design, hydraulic system, safety locks, and load holding. It also means every unit shipping under that model number carries an ALI Gold serial label riveted to the column. For the RV shop, that label was not optional. Their commercial insurance carrier requires ALI-certified equipment for anything under 14,000 lb rated capacity, and their state OSHA inspection references the ALI standard by name. When we quote a 2 post car lift, we lead with ALI Gold certified units because it is the cheapest paperwork you will ever buy. Our complete ALI Gold certified lift list shows every model we carry with an active certificate.

Exhaust and Driveline Access on a 2 Post Car Lift

The reason a 2 post car lift is the shop favorite for driveline work comes down to arm swing and pad placement. Three-stage front arms telescope short enough to reach the front lift point on a compact car and long enough to hit the frame on an F350. Once the vehicle is at working height, the tech has clean overhead access to the transmission crossmember, driveshaft, tailpipe, and rear differential. On this shop’s first exhaust job, the tech reported the swap took forty minutes instead of the usual ninety on jack stands. Driveshaft removal is even more dramatic, because there is no creeper wrestling under a lowered vehicle. If exhaust and driveline are your bread and butter, a properly specced 2 post car lift will pay for itself in labor hours faster than almost any other tool in the bay.

The Install Day in Southwest Iowa

We drove the SPOA10 down in early spring, and the install took our crew about six hours from unload to first test lift. The shop had poured a fresh 5-inch section of 4,000 psi concrete when the building was built in 2019, so anchor pull test passed easily on the first try. The overhead cutoff bar and 12 ft ceiling gave us the clearance we needed. Their existing 240V single phase circuit needed a small panel upgrade for a proper 30A breaker, which their electrician handled the morning of install. We walked the owner and lead tech through every daily safety check, arm restraint engagement, and the monthly greasing schedule before we packed up. First real vehicle went up that afternoon.

First Three Months of Daily Use

The shop tracked cycle counts on the new 2 post car lift for the first three months out of curiosity. They hit 340 lift cycles in ninety days, which is a heavier duty cycle than most home shops see in five years. The only issue was one loose hydraulic fitting we retorqued under warranty in month two, a normal break-in adjustment on any new lift. Cable tension checked in spec. Arm restraint teeth showed even wear. Overhead cutoff bar still tripped cleanly when we tested it. The lead tech told us the crew stopped even thinking about it as new equipment by week three, which is exactly what you want from a piece of shop iron. Our 2 post lift break-in maintenance article covers the same 90-day interval we use.

Twelve Months In and What They Would Change

At the one-year anniversary we stopped back for the annual inspection required by their ALI Gold documentation program. Everything checked out clean. Anchor bolts held torque, cable equalizer still tracked, safety locks engaged at every notch. The owner said the only thing he would change is that he should have bought two the lifts instead of one. Second bay demand outran the single lift within six months, and the shop is now on our schedule for a matching SPOA10 install this fall. That is the pattern we see with almost every commercial account that starts with one lift. If you are weighing a first purchase, plan the bay layout as if a second unit is going in eventually, because it usually will. Call us at 800-674-9302 for a bay walkthrough.
