A 2 post car lift is a strange piece of equipment for a collector to buy, because for eleven months of the year it sits idle holding a car in the air while you drive past it on the way to the workbench. We hear this story often at Auto Lift Services, and it happened again last spring when a longtime customer near Ames called about installing his first lift. He had bought an early 1970s coupe he planned to store on a lift over winters and pull down each spring for the driving season. This is the walk-through of his first year with a 2 post car lift, from the initial site survey through his first real service call.

The initial site survey in an Ames pole barn

The building was a 30×40 pole barn on the west side of Ames with a poured slab, one overhead door, and a bench along the back wall. Our first job was to measure the actual clear ceiling, not the ridge height. Under the lowest purlin, the clear was 11 feet 4 inches. That mattered because a standard overhead 2 post car lift with a shutoff bar wants closer to 12 feet, and the owner did not want to cut into the ceiling. So we started the conversation about a baseplate configuration instead of overhead.

We also measured slab thickness at the corners with a small core drill, and the slab came in a hair under five inches with visible rebar. Enough for a 10,000 lb capacity lift with the correct anchor pattern, once we confirmed the mix design with the original builder. The bay was 14 feet wide, plenty for a 10K symmetric lift with 12-foot column-to-column spacing. Electrical was the last check; a subpanel already ran to the barn but had no dedicated 220V circuit. We wrote up the survey with three deliverables: which lift model we would install, what the electrician needed to run before install day, and the anchor drawing to lay out the columns.

Choosing the lift model for a collector’s use case

A collector using a 2 post car lift for seasonal storage has completely different priorities than a working shop. Duty cycle is nearly zero, but the lift needs to hold weight reliably for months at a time on the mechanical locks with no hydraulic creep. Arm reach and pad geometry matter less because the vehicle stays on the same pads all winter. What matters more is finish quality, corrosion resistance in an unheated barn, and mechanical lock engagement that you can trust when you walk away for four months.

We landed on a symmetric 10,000 lb baseplate model with a single-point safety release and drop-end arms. The drop-end arms let him get the low pinch welds of the coupe without cranking the arms up into the rocker panels, and the baseplate gave him unlimited ceiling above the car. Total kit price landed comfortably within his budget, which he had targeted around what a hobby-tier 2 post car lift usually runs from our lineup. He passed on the aluminum pad upgrade because his car has original rocker seams and he wanted the standard rubber-topped pads for the softer contact patch. Small decisions, but they matter for a collector-grade setup.

Getting the electrical ready before install day

The electrical piece was straightforward once he had an electrician he trusted. We sent him the wiring diagram, the amp draw at run current, the locked-rotor amperage for the motor, and a note about breaker sizing. His electrician pulled a dedicated 30 amp double-pole breaker in the barn subpanel and ran 10 gauge to a NEMA 6-30 receptacle mounted about three feet up on the north column location. The power unit for this particular 2 post car lift model has a factory pigtail with the matching plug, so nothing needed to be hardwired.

One detail worth noting: he added a second outlet on the same circuit at bench height for a battery tender, which is a common ask on a storage bay because you want to keep the car alive over winter without dragging cords across the floor. He also stubbed in an air line from his compressor along the same wall so he could air the tires up in spring without dragging a hose across the whole barn. None of that was strictly required for the lift, but it was easy while the electrician was already on site. When install day arrived, we plugged the power unit in, cycled the lift a dozen times empty to bleed the hydraulic system, and moved on to anchor pull-testing.

Install day: anchors, plumb, and first cycle

Install day started with laying out the anchor pattern from the manufacturer’s drawing. We used a rotary hammer to drill the pilot holes, cleaned them with compressed air and a wire brush, and set the wedge anchors to the specified torque. The rear column went up first, plumb checked with a four-foot level in both directions, then the front column, then the crossbar between them. On a baseplate lift the equalization cables route through the base channel, which we ran and adjusted before we ever put weight on the arms.

The first live cycle is always empty. We ran the 2 post car lift up to full height, engaged the mechanical locks, released back to the hydraulics, and lowered it. Then we did it three more times, watching for uneven column travel, cable slack, or air in the hydraulic system. Everything ran clean. For the first loaded cycle we drove a shop truck onto the arms, set the pads at the factory lift points, and raised the truck about 18 inches. Locks engaged evenly. Down clean. Ready for the coupe. That was the moment the owner said the lift felt real, not just a purchase order. The whole install ran about four hours start to finish.

Loading the collector car for the winter

Loading a low classic onto a 2 post car lift for the first time is where a collector earns his stripes. The coupe sits about four inches lower than a modern sedan at the rocker, and the factory jack points are underneath the pinch welds along the frame rails. We spent about ten minutes with him teaching pad placement before we walked him through his first solo lift. The drop-end arms let him get the pads under the rockers without scraping paint, and the arms swung inward far enough that both front pads engaged before the rears took any load.

Raise speed on this model is roughly 45 seconds to full height empty and a little slower loaded. He raised the coupe about eight feet, engaged the mechanical locks, and then walked around the car twice checking pad contact. Everything solid. Below the car he now had roughly six and a half feet of clearance, enough to walk under and do the occasional oil change or brake inspection without dropping the car. For pure winter storage he only needed the car up high enough to fit a rolling cabinet or bench under it, but the extra height meant he could actually work if he wanted to.

Spring pull-down and the first service call

Four months later he called us back for what he called an issue but was really just a first-service item. The hydraulic reservoir was reading a touch low on the sight glass and the raise speed had slowed slightly. Neither is unusual after a full season of temperature swings in an unheated Ames barn. Cold hydraulic fluid is more viscous, and small amounts of air can work into the system over months of dormancy even without a physical leak. We had him top off with the correct AW-32 hydraulic oil we stock, and then bleed the system by cycling the lift six or seven times to full height with the release valve manipulated between cycles.

Raise speed came back within spec on the fifth cycle. No repair needed. This is the pattern we see with almost every collector-grade 2 post car lift used for seasonal storage: the equipment works fine, but the fluid and cable tension deserve a spring check before you trust the mechanical locks with another season. We now schedule an annual spring service visit for him and several other collectors in the Ames area. It is a low-cost hour of preventive work that keeps the lift honest.

What year one taught us about collector-grade setups

Twelve months into ownership, the takeaways were simple. First, the site survey mattered more than the lift purchase. Getting the ceiling, slab, and electrical right in advance meant install day was smooth and the lift has performed exactly as spec. Second, a baseplate configuration is often the right pick for older buildings where ceiling height is fixed. Third, a collector using a 2 post car lift for seasonal storage should plan on an annual service check even if the lift only sees a handful of cycles a year, because ambient temperature and time both affect hydraulic systems.
