A trailer and RV service shop on the east side of Cedar Rapids called us in late winter about adding a 2 post car lift to a bay that had spent a decade doing nothing but seasonal storage intake — de-winterizing in April, winterizing in October, and a whole lot of bearing repacks and brake work on tow vehicles in between. They’d been doing everything on jack stands and a floor jack, which works right up until you’re on your fortieth axle of the season and your back files a complaint. What follows is roughly how that first year went, from the site walk through install day and the first service call twelve months later. We’ve anonymized the shop, but the sequence is real and it’s typical.

Why an RV and Trailer Shop Wanted a Two-Post at All

The obvious question, and the owner asked it himself: if you work on RVs and trailers, why not go straight to four-post or mobile columns? The answer was that the actual revenue in a seasonal storage operation isn’t the motorhomes. It’s the tow vehicles. Three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups, Suburbans, the occasional Transit — vehicles that come in for brakes, exhaust, ball joints, and transmission service because the customer is already there dropping off the camper. A drive-on four-post is wonderful for alignment and storage but terrible for wheels-off work, and mobile columns were overkill for a single bay.

So the equipment that made sense was a clear-floor two-post in the 12,000 lb class. Capacity mattered more than the numbers suggested — a loaded one-ton with a service body and a full fuel tank gets closer to a lift’s rating than people expect, and putting a 10,000 lb unit at ninety percent of capacity every day is a recipe for cable stretch and unhappy locks. The shop also wanted asymmetric arms so the driver’s door would still open with a crew cab up in the air, because techs get in and out of those trucks constantly during a brake job. We spec’d accordingly and moved on to the part that actually determines whether the project works: the building.

The Site Walk: Ceiling, Concrete, and a Storage Mezzanine in the Way

Their bay had 13-foot ceilings, which is comfortable for an overhead-style unit, except that the previous tenant had built a storage mezzanine along the north wall that intruded about six feet into the space at 9 feet of height. Storage RV operations accumulate stuff — covers, jack pads, propane fittings, antifreeze — and nobody was tearing that mezzanine out. That single obstruction pushed us toward a baseplate configuration, where the equalization cables and hydraulic hose cross at floor level in a low ramp channel instead of overhead.

Concrete was the other unknown. The building was a 1990s pre-engineered steel structure, and the slab was documented as five inches but nobody had a core sample. We had them core-drill a test hole near the intended column location. It came back at five and a half inches of decent 3,500 PSI concrete with no rebar issues and no post-tension cable — which is exactly what you hope for, and roughly one time in four it isn’t. If that core had come back at three inches, the whole plan changes: you’re cutting out a section and pouring dedicated pads, which adds a cure week and real cost. We tell every buyer to core-drill before they order. A 2 post car lift is only as safe as what its anchors bite into, and there’s no way to know from the surface.

Why ALI Gold Certification Mattered to Their Insurance Carrier

Here’s the piece the shop owner didn’t anticipate. When he told his commercial insurance carrier he was adding lift equipment, the underwriter asked a very specific question: is it ALI certified? Not “is it safe,” not “what brand” — is it certified by the Automotive Lift Institute to ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards, with a Gold Label on the column.

ALI certification means an independent lab tested that exact model to the standard — load capacity, structural integrity, lowering speed, lock engagement, stability — and that the manufacturer submits to ongoing audits. The Gold Label on the column carries a serial number you can look up. It isn’t a marketing sticker; it’s third-party validation, and it’s why we stock Rotary and Challenger for commercial work. Uncertified imports show up cheap on marketplace listings all the time and we understand the temptation, but when your carrier or an OSHA inspector or, worst case, a plaintiff’s attorney asks the question, “it seemed sturdy” is not an answer. The shop’s premium didn’t go up. Had he installed an uncertified unit, the conversation would have gone differently, and possibly the coverage would have too. If you’re buying for a business rather than a home garage, treat the Gold Label as a hard requirement on any 2 post car lift you consider.

Install Day and the First Two Weeks

Install ran about seven hours with two techs. Columns came off the truck on their forklift, anchors were set to spec with a torque wrench and re-checked after the initial load cycle, the baseplate cover was fitted, hydraulic lines were run and bled, and the electrical whip — already roughed in by their electrician the week prior on a dedicated 30-amp 240V circuit — got landed and tested. Then the important part: cycling it empty half a dozen times, then loading a shop truck and running it to full height and back down while listening to the locks engage evenly on both sides.

The first two weeks are where new owners develop habits, good or bad. We spent forty minutes with their techs on arm placement, because that’s the whole game. Pickup lift points are not intuitive, and a crew cab dually with a fifth-wheel hitch has a rearward bias that catches people out. We walked them through checking the manufacturer’s lift point guide, using the drop-end arms on low-clearance vehicles, and — the rule that matters most — never adjusting arms with the vehicle already off the ground. Their lead tech, who’d worked in a dealership years earlier, backed us up on all of it, which helps. Culture around a 2 post car lift gets set in the first month and it’s hard to change later.

How Seasonal Storage Work Actually Loaded the Lift

The usage pattern surprised them. They’d assumed light, steady use. What they got was two brutal spikes and a quiet middle. April brought de-winterizing season, which meant every customer picking up a camper also wanted the tow vehicle looked at before a trip — brakes, wheel bearings, trailer wiring, exhaust. The lift ran twenty-plus cycles a day for six straight weeks. Same story in October in reverse.

That’s exactly the duty profile a commercial-grade unit is built for, and it’s exactly the profile that destroys a residential-grade one. The difference isn’t visible in a photo. It’s in the power unit’s motor rating, the pump’s continuous-duty design, the cable construction, the thickness of the carriage slide blocks, and the lock mechanism’s cycle testing. A homeowner lift rated for a few hundred cycles a year is a fine purchase for a home garage. Put it in a shop doing forty raises a week during storage season and you’ll be replacing slide blocks in eighteen months. The shop’s operating cost through the first year was essentially nothing beyond hydraulic fluid top-off and a can of chain-and-cable lube — because we spec’d for the peak, not the average. The First Service Call: What Twelve Months Looks Like

At the eleven-month mark they called for the annual inspection, which ALI recommends and which we do throughout eastern Iowa. Here’s what we found. Anchor torque had relaxed slightly on three of the eight bolts — normal, expected, retorqued in five minutes. Equalization cables had stretched maybe a quarter turn’s worth of adjustment, also normal on a first-year unit that’s been worked hard; we re-tensioned and confirmed both carriages arrived at the same height. Arm restraint gears showed light wear but full engagement.

The one real finding: a slow weep at the cylinder rod seal on the passenger side, visible as a thin film of hydraulic fluid on the column’s inner channel. Not a failure, not a safety issue yet, but the kind of thing that turns into a puddle and a slow-drift complaint in another six months. We replaced the seal on site out of stock. That’s the argument for buying from someone who stocks parts rather than someone who just drop-ships boxes — the seal kit was in the van. The shop’s total first-year cost of ownership beyond the purchase was one inspection and one seal kit. Twelve months of hard seasonal work on a properly spec’d, properly installed, ALI Gold-certified 2 post car lift should look about like that.
