Buying a 2 post car lift for a home garage usually starts with one specific job that finally pushed you over the edge. For a lot of the folks who call us out of northwest Iowa, that job is annual inspections and the seasonal safety checks they do for family, neighbors, and the two or three side-jobs a month that keep showing up in the driveway. Crawling under a car on jack stands to check brake lines, exhaust hangers, ball joints, and tire condition gets old fast, especially in February. Start With the Heaviest Vehicle You Will Actually Lift
Almost every first-time buyer overestimates the capacity they need and underestimates the ceiling they have. We get calls where somebody insists on 12,000 lb because it sounds safer, then tells us the heaviest thing they own is a half-ton pickup at about 5,800 lb and a sedan at 3,400. A 10,000 lb model handles that with a wide margin. One buyer near Spirit Lake told us his heaviest vehicle was 6,000 lb and he was working with a hard budget — a 9,000 to 10,000 lb unit was the right answer, not a heavier column that would have eaten the whole budget and given him nothing extra.
Where capacity does matter is if you have a three-quarter-ton diesel, a dually, or a loaded work van in the mix. Those trucks push 8,000 to 9,500 lb wet, and if you plan on lifting one with a topper and tool boxes, step up. The other thing to check is per-arm loading and pad reach, not just the total number on the sticker. A lift rated at 10,000 lb still has to reach the correct pickup points on a long-wheelbase truck, and short arms with limited telescoping range will fight you. Symmetric vs Asymmetric: What Actually Changes
This is the question that decides how usable your lift feels every single day. On a symmetric setup, the columns face each other directly and the four arms are roughly equal length, so the vehicle sits centered between the posts with about half its weight in front of the columns and half behind. That geometry is ideal for trucks, vans, and long-wheelbase vehicles because the load balances naturally and the arms reach far enough forward to hit frame points on a full-size pickup. The drawback is that the driver’s door lands right at the column, so getting in and out of a sedan once it is raised means squeezing.
On an asymmetric setup, the columns are rotated roughly 30 degrees and the front arms are shorter than the rear arms. The vehicle sits back in the bay, which puts the door opening clear of the post and makes interior access easy. That matters if you do inspections where you are constantly opening doors to check horn, wipers, seatbelts, and dash lights. The trade-off is a lower practical capacity ceiling for very heavy or very long vehicles and a fussier spot on the approach. Plenty of modern units are versymmetric — an adjustable top beam and swing arms that let you run either configuration. If you are doing mixed passenger cars and light trucks with a lot of in-cab work, that flexibility is worth the small premium. For a home shop with more sedans than trucks, we usually steer toward asymmetric or versymmetric.
Ceiling Height Decides Overhead vs Baseplate
Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak of the truss. Garage door tracks, opener rails, light fixtures, and cross-bracing all count. A clear-floor overhead model routes the equalizer cables and hydraulic hose through a beam across the top of the columns, which keeps the floor completely open for rolling toolboxes and transmission jacks. Those need roughly 11 to 12 feet of true clearance for a standard 10,000 lb unit, more if you want full rise on a tall vehicle.
If you are working with a 10-foot ceiling or a garage with an opener rail in the way, a baseplate model is the answer. The cables and hose run through a low plate that crosses the floor between the posts, so overall height drops significantly. You do drive over that plate every time, and it is a minor trip point, but thousands of shops run baseplate units without complaint. We had a buyer in the Dakotas tell us he could not do an overhead and had a hard 139-inch maximum height — baseplate was the only honest recommendation. Also think about where the vehicle roof ends up. A raised full-size SUV on a lift with the arms at 72 inches needs a lot of room above it. Concrete: The Part Nobody Wants to Hear About
Anchors are only as good as what they bite into. Most two-post specifications call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and some heavier models want more. The problem is that a lot of Iowa garage slabs were poured thin at the edges, or over questionable fill, or with control joints exactly where you want to set a column. We have had buyers tell us their concrete is “about five inches, maybe less” — that “maybe less” is where trouble starts, and it is worth knowing for certain before anchors go in.
The cheap way to find out is to drill a test hole with a hammer drill in the general footprint where the posts will land and measure the depth before you hit dirt. If you come up short, you are not out of luck. Cutting and pouring two footing pads sized to the manufacturer’s spec is a straightforward concrete job, and it is dramatically cheaper than a failure. Keep anchors away from slab edges and control joints by the distance the manual specifies, and never shim a column more than the allowed stack. We also see people skip torquing anchors to spec because the impact gun “felt tight” — use a torque wrench, check the anchors again after the first few cycles, and write the date on the wall. A 2 post car lift that is properly anchored into good concrete will outlast the building it is in.
Budget Tiers and Where the Money Goes
We talk to buyers across the whole range. On the entry end, a value-brand 9,000 to 10,000 lb two-post lands in the low four figures. That equipment will lift a car and pass inspection, but you are typically getting thinner steel, simpler arm restraints, generic cylinders, and parts support that may be spotty in five years. Mid-tier gets you better cable and sheave quality, more refined safety locks, and telescoping arms with real reach. Premium commercial units from Rotary and Challenger cost more up front and are the ones we can still get every seal, sheave, cable, and lock dog for two decades later.
For a home shop doing inspections and maintenance a few times a month, mid-tier is usually the sweet spot. Buyers who tell us they use the lift maybe once a month for oil changes and brake work genuinely do not need a 15,000 lb commercial column. Where we push back is when someone tries to save a few hundred dollars on the cheapest unit available and then asks us to service it three years later. Parts availability is the hidden cost. Ask us what a replacement cable set, a lock release cable, and a cylinder cost for whatever model you are considering before you buy — that answer tells you more about long-term value than the sticker. And factor freight, a possible liftgate, and installation labor into your number, because those are real line items on every quote we write.
Installation, Freight, and Doing It Yourself
Plenty of buyers install their own equipment, and if you have a forklift or a skid steer with forks, a hammer drill, a torque wrench, and a patient helper, it is very doable in a long day. The columns are heavy and awkward, the top beam has to come up square, and the shipment usually arrives on a semi that cannot get down a gravel lane. We routinely hear “I have a forklift for unloading, I do not need install” — that is fine with us, and we will make sure the parts, hardware, and manual are complete before it ships.

Living With Your Lift: Inspections, Locks, and Habits
The habits you build in the first month determine whether your 2 post car lift is a 25-year tool or a five-year headache. Before every lift, walk the arms and confirm the pads are seated on real pickup points — pinch welds, frame rails, or the manufacturer’s designated points, never a floor pan or a plastic rocker cover. Raise the vehicle a few inches, stop, and shake it. If it rocks, lower and reset. Then raise to working height and lower onto the mechanical locks so the hydraulics are not holding the load. That last step is the one people skip, and it is the one that matters.
Monthly, look at the equalizer cables where they pass over the sheaves, check for broken strands or flat spots, and confirm both columns lock at the same notch. Grease the inside of the columns per the manual, check hydraulic fluid, and look for weeping at the cylinder rod seal or the hose fittings. If the motor runs and the carriage will not rise, that is often air in the system, a low reservoir, or a tired cylinder — we get that exact call regularly on older commercial units and can usually diagnose it over the phone. Keep an annual written inspection on file; it is good practice and it is what a serious shop does.
