A guy outside Sioux City called us last spring about a 2 post car lift because he’d finally had enough of doing coil-over swaps on jack stands in a gravel-floored shed. He rebuilds front ends on weekends — struts, control arms, sway bar links, the occasional full coilover conversion — and he’d already picked out a model from a website before he called. Good instincts, wrong order of operations. We spent twenty minutes on the phone walking through his slab thickness, ceiling height, door header, and where his air compressor sat, and by the end of that call the lift he’d picked was the wrong one. This article is that same conversation, written down as a checklist you can run yourself before you spend a dime.

Why suspension work changes what you should buy
Suspension and shock replacement is different from oil changes and brake jobs in one important way: you need the wheels hanging free, and you need to get a long breaker bar, an impact, and sometimes a spring compressor into the wheel well from multiple angles. That’s exactly what a two-post is built for. The vehicle hangs by its frame or pinch welds, the suspension droops to full extension, and there’s nothing under the car blocking your access. A four-post keeps the wheels loaded on runways, which is fine for storage and exhaust work but useless when you’re trying to unload a strut.
Where hobbyists get burned is arm reach and pad height. If you work on lowered cars, a lift with drop-end arms and screw-up pads that collapse low enough to slide under a 4-inch ride height matters more than raw capacity. If you also pull the family truck in, you need arms that swing long enough to reach the frame lift points on a crew cab. We ask people what the shortest and longest vehicles in the rotation are, not just the heaviest. A 10,000 lb symmetric clear-floor unit with telescoping arms covers most home suspension shops. Step one: measure your concrete honestly
This is where more deals fall apart than anywhere else. Every two-post anchors into the slab, and the anchors are the only thing keeping the columns vertical under load. Most manufacturers spec a minimum of 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb unit, cured at least 28 days, with no expansion joint or seam running under a column base. We’ve had callers tell us their pour is “about five inches, maybe less” — and “maybe less” is the part that matters. Drill a test hole in an out-of-the-way spot, or rent a hammer drill and pull the dust. Ten minutes of work beats finding out during install.
If the slab is thin, cracked, or you genuinely don’t know, the fix is a footing pad: cut out a square under each column, dig down, and pour new concrete tied into the existing slab. We do these regularly in older Iowa garages and pole barns where the original pour was three inches over dirt. It adds a weekend and some money, but it’s cheaper than a failed anchor. Also check for radiant heat tubing and post-tension cable before anyone drills — if there’s PEX in that floor, we need to know before the rotary hammer comes out. Bring us photos and a tape measure reading and we’ll tell you straight whether the floor is usable as-is.
Ceiling height, door headers, and the overhead question
A clear-floor overhead two-post routes the equalization cables and hoses through a top beam that sits above the vehicle. That beam is what determines your minimum ceiling. Most 10,000 lb overhead models want roughly 11 to 12 feet of clear height to reach full rise, and some need closer to 13 to raise a tall truck all the way. If you’ve got a 9-foot residential garage ceiling, an overhead is out and you’re looking at a baseplate model where the crossover runs along the floor, or a mid-rise scissor if you only need waist height.
Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Garage door tracks, opener rails, sprinkler heads, and light fixtures all count. One customer in Woodbury County had 12 feet at the ridge and 9 feet 8 inches under the opener rail — we relocated the opener to a jackshaft mount on the wall and gained everything back. Also measure your overhead door opening height, because if the header is 7 feet and the lift is fully down at 4 inches, you still have to drive tall vehicles in before raising. And check where the top beam will land relative to the door track when the door is open. We walk this on every site survey, and it’s the single most common reason a shipment gets swapped from an overhead configuration to a baseplate before it leaves the dock.
Bay layout: width, drive-through, and working room
Column spacing on most two-posts runs 11 to 12 feet outside-to-outside, and you want at least 2 feet of clear walking room on each side of the vehicle when it’s up. That puts a practical minimum bay width around 16 feet for comfortable use, though we’ve installed in 14-foot bays where the owner accepted tighter clearance. Depth matters too: 22 to 24 feet lets you get in front of and behind the car with a transmission jack or a spring compressor stand.
Think about what’s on the walls. The Sioux City caller had a loft on one side and a workbench on the other, which killed his plan to center the lift in the bay. We ended up offsetting the layout so the loaded side had full clearance and the wall side got the narrower gap, then rotated the power unit to the open column. Wide versus narrow drive-through is another decision — an expandable top beam lets you set the columns for a wide truck or a narrow car depending on what you drive most. Also plan your air and electrical drops before install, because you don’t want an extension cord snaking across a bay every time you run an impact. We map all of this on paper first: lift centerline, column pads, power unit side, hose routing, and the two clearance zones you’ll actually stand in.
Power, air, and hydraulic fluid you’ll need on day one
Most home-garage two-post power units run on 208-230V single phase, drawing 20 to 30 amps. A standard 120V garage circuit won’t do it. If you don’t already have a 240V outlet near the intended column, budget for an electrician to pull a dedicated circuit with a disconnect. Some manufacturers offer a 115V option on lighter-capacity units, but they lift slower and work the motor harder — we generally steer people to 240V if the panel has room for it.
You’ll also need hydraulic fluid, and it doesn’t ship with the lift. Most two-post units take between two and three gallons of AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, or Dexron ATF if the manufacturer allows it — check the manual, because mixing the wrong fluid causes seal swelling and slow drift. Have it on hand before install day. Air is optional but recommended: most locking mechanisms are air-released, and while manual release cables work fine, a shop air line at the column makes lowering a one-hand operation. Add a bottle of anchor-hole cleaner or a shop vac with a crevice tool, a torque wrench that reaches the anchor spec, and a good 4-foot level. A 2 post car lift install goes smoothly when the consumables are staged before the truck arrives, and it turns into a two-day job when they aren’t.
What our site survey actually covers
When we do a survey — in person around central Iowa, or by photo and phone for the Sioux City end of the state and out into Nebraska and South Dakota — we’re documenting seven things. Slab thickness and condition at each column location. Clear ceiling height at the lowest obstruction. Door header height and track position. Bay width and depth with obstructions noted. Existing electrical service and distance to the panel. Delivery access, including whether a semi can get close and whether you have a forklift or need liftgate service. And the vehicle list, because that drives capacity, arm style, and pad selection.
That last one catches people. Someone tells us their heaviest vehicle is 6,000 pounds, which sounds like a 9,000 lb unit is plenty. Then it turns out they occasionally do a friend’s three-quarter-ton diesel, which is 7,800 pounds with a topper and a toolbox, and the weight distribution puts most of it on the front arms. We’d rather size up than have you regret it in year two. A 2 post car lift is a fifteen-to-twenty-year purchase in a home shop, and the price difference between 9,000 and 10,000 lb capacity is small compared to the cost of wanting more later. Installation, certification, and what happens after
Plenty of hobbyists install their own equipment, and some manufacturers ship units specifically for owner assembly. If you’ve got a forklift or a good engine hoist, a helper, a rotary hammer, and a free Saturday, it’s doable. What we’d insist on either way is that the anchors get torqued to spec, the columns get shimmed plumb within manufacturer tolerance, the equalization cables get adjusted so both carriages rise together, and the safety locks get tested loaded before a car goes on it. Skipping the plumb check is how you end up with uneven lock engagement and a carriage that binds.
