A rural farm shop owner in western Illinois called us about a 2 post car lift for his personal shed. He runs a mix of tire rotations, wheel bearing repacks, brake jobs on his family vehicles, and occasional work on his neighbor’s grain hauler pickup. The building is a 40×60 pole barn with a 12-foot ceiling and a 20-year-old concrete slab of unknown thickness. He wanted the pre-purchase checklist we walk every farm shop buyer through before they wire us a deposit. Here it is, item by item, using his install as the concrete example.

Measure Ceiling Clearance Twice
The first line on the 2 post car lift checklist is ceiling height, measured to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Purlins, sprinkler heads, and light fixtures all count. An overhead-style 2 post car lift with a top-mounted equalizer rail typically needs 12 feet of clear vertical space to raise a full-size pickup to a working height. If your barn has 11 feet 4 inches to the bottom of the truss chord, an overhead unit will not physically fit. This is where the baseplate configuration becomes the answer. A baseplate 2 post car lift routes the equalizer cables and hydraulic hose across the floor at the columns’ bases, freeing the entire overhead. It gets you the same lift with a much shorter ceiling budget.
Choose Overhead or Baseplate Configuration
Once you know your ceiling number, the overhead versus baseplate decision is straightforward. Overhead is cleaner underfoot, lets a tech walk around the shop without stepping over anything, and has an overhead cutoff bar that protects vehicle roofs. Baseplate wins when the ceiling will not accommodate an overhead. For this farm shop, we specced a baseplate 2 post car lift because his 12-foot ceiling had a low-hanging light track we could not move. Verify Concrete Depth and Age
A 2 post car lift lives or dies on the concrete underneath it. Old farm barns often have thin, unreinforced pours that were never intended to anchor 25,000 pounds of dynamic load. The manufacturer specs for a 10,000 lb 2 post car lift call for a minimum 4 inches of 3,000 psi concrete, and we prefer to see 4.5 or more. If you cannot find the original pour paperwork, drill a single test hole with a rotary hammer in the intended anchor location and measure. The farm shop’s slab came back at 5 inches with no rebar in the anchor zone, which was acceptable for a residential-duty install. Anything under 4 inches, or a slab poured on frost-heaved subgrade, means either a new pad or a different lift plan.
Match Capacity to Real Workload
The temptation on a farm shop 2 post car lift is to buy big. A 15,000 lb unit sounds like it will last forever, and it will, but it also costs more, needs stiffer concrete, and often eats more shop floor. This owner’s heaviest regular vehicle is a Dodge Ram 2500 at about 7,800 lb loaded. A 10,000 lb 2 post car lift covers that with a 22 percent capacity margin, which is the range we recommend. Going up to 12K adds ceiling height and cost. Going up to 15K starts requiring three-phase power on some models. For tire rotation and wheel bearing work on light and medium trucks, a well-specced 10,000 lb lift is almost always the right answer.
Pick the Right Arm Design for Tire and Wheel Work
Tire rotation is easier on a 2 post car lift than any other lift style, because the wheels hang free the second the vehicle comes off the ground. What matters is arm reach. Three-stage front arms telescope tight enough to lift a compact car and long enough to reach the frame lift points on a full-size pickup. Two-stage arms save a few hundred dollars but limit vehicle range. For a farm shop that will see everything from a Honda Civic to an F250, three-stage front arms are the checklist requirement. Pad height adjusters also matter: pinch weld frames and truck frames need different pad shapes, and cheap lifts skimp on that adapter set.
Confirm Electrical Supply
Most residential-duty 2 post car lift models run on 208 to 240 volt single-phase power at 20 to 30 amps. If your farm shop was wired for a welder or an air compressor, you probably already have a suitable circuit. The gotcha is subpanel sizing. If you are adding a 2 post car lift to a shop that already runs a 60-amp welder, a rotary compressor, and shop lighting off a 100-amp feed, the panel may not have room for the new breaker. Call your electrician before you pour a deposit. Our western Illinois customer had a 200-amp shop feed with plenty of headroom, so his install added a single dedicated 30-amp circuit with no drama.
Plan Delivery, Install, and First Cycle
The last checklist item is logistics. A the lift ships freight, palletized, roughly 1,600 to 2,200 lb depending on capacity. You need a forklift or a tractor with pallet forks to get it off the truck. Farm shops usually have this covered. Install runs six to eight hours for a two-person crew with a rotary hammer, torque wrench, and level.
