A collector down in southern Minnesota called us in January with a garage full of cars, a tired automatic in a 1970s cruiser, and a tape measure in his hand. He wanted a 2 post car lift so he could finally pull a transmission standing up instead of lying on cardboard, and he had one question before anything else: will it fit? Fourteen-foot ceiling, a sectional overhead door on tracks, a loft over one side of the shop, and no forklift on site. That combination is normal, solvable, and exactly where most first-time buyers get tripped up. Here is how his first year went, from measuring to the day the trans came out.

The Measurements That Decide Everything

Four numbers determine which lift you can buy, and none of them are negotiable after the fact. First is finished ceiling height measured to the lowest obstruction, not the peak — that means the bottom of a truss, a light fixture, a heater, or a garage door track, whichever hangs lowest. Second is concrete thickness and strength; most 10,000 lb units want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many manufacturers specify more. Third is the heaviest vehicle you will ever put up, with a margin. Fourth is usable floor width and depth, including where you will stand to swing a door open once the car is on the arms.

Our southern Minnesota collector had fourteen feet of clear height in the main bay, which is generous, but his lowest obstruction was a run of fluorescent fixtures at eleven feet six inches on one side. That mattered because a clearfloor two-post carries an overhead crossbeam with the hydraulic hose and equalization cable inside it, and the beam plus a raised vehicle’s roof plus a few inches of safety margin is your real requirement. Baseplate designs move that plumbing to the floor and free up all your headroom. Once we had his four numbers written down, the shortlist for a 2 post car lift in that building was two models instead of twenty, and the whole conversation got easier.

Clearfloor Versus Baseplate in a Shop With a Loft

The overhead-versus-baseplate question comes down to what is above you and what is under you. Clearfloor is the shop favorite because the floor between the columns is completely open — nothing to trip on, nothing for a transmission jack to catch on, easy to sweep. The tradeoff is you need roughly twelve feet of clear height for a car and more for a tall truck, and the crossbeam has to clear your door tracks. Baseplate trades a low steel channel across the floor for total overhead freedom, and it is the right answer in a garage with a low ceiling, a loft, or an obstruction you cannot move.

In this case the loft ran along the left wall and stopped about four feet short of where the driver-side column needed to sit, so a clearfloor unit was still viable — but only after we mapped where the crossbeam would land relative to the open door. That is a step people skip. A sectional overhead door does not swing; it rolls up into horizontal tracks that occupy the first twelve to eighteen inches below your ceiling for the full depth of the door travel. If your crossbeam sits inside that zone, the door will hit it, and you will find out the expensive way. We had him raise the door, mark the underside of the fully-open panel on both side walls with painter’s tape, and measure from the slab to that tape. Eleven feet two inches. Tight, but workable once we chose the shorter-column configuration.

Door Swing, Column Placement, and Getting In and Out

Ceiling height gets all the attention and column spacing causes more daily frustration. Two-post lifts come in symmetric and asymmetric layouts. Symmetric puts the columns directly across from each other with equal-length arms, centers the vehicle between them, and gives you maximum lifting stability for heavy or long vehicles — but the car’s door often lands right at the column, which is miserable if you are climbing in and out repeatedly. Asymmetric rotates the columns and uses uneven arm lengths to sit the vehicle back about thirty percent, so the door opening clears the post.

For a collector working on a 1970s car with long, heavy doors and freshly painted sheet metal, asymmetric was an easy recommendation. He is in and out of that car constantly during a transmission job — checking shifter linkage, cycling the ignition, watching fluid level — and dinging a door on a column would ruin his week. Some models are convertible, with expandable top beams and telescoping arms that let you run either configuration depending on the vehicle, which is genuinely useful in a mixed collection where one car is a compact and the next is a full-size wagon. We also walked his floor plan for approach angles: a low-slung car needs a straight, unobstructed run at the arms, and a 2 post car lift installed too close to a side wall makes that impossible. Concrete: The Part Nobody Wants to Hear About

His slab was poured in the late nineties and he thought it was six inches. We asked him to core or drill a test hole in the actual footprint area, not near the edge where thickness often differs, and it came back at four and a half inches with no visible rebar. That is right at the minimum for a 10,000 lb unit and it changes how you anchor. Thin or marginal concrete does not automatically disqualify you, but it does mean you follow the manufacturer’s spec exactly on anchor type, embedment depth, and edge distance — and you do not improvise with whatever wedge anchors are in the coffee can on the bench.

When concrete is genuinely too thin, cracked, or sitting on soft fill, the fix is a pair of footing pads: saw-cut and remove the slab under each column, dig down, tie in rebar, and pour a properly sized pad of 3,000 to 4,000 PSI concrete. It is a day of dirty work plus a cure period, and it costs a fraction of what a dropped car costs. We would rather quote that than install on a slab we do not trust. He got lucky — his four and a half inches were sound, uncracked, and on well-compacted base, so we anchored per spec and moved on. Unloading and Installing Without a Forklift

Two columns of a 10,000 lb unit weigh in the neighborhood of five to seven hundred pounds each, crated, and freight arrives on a dry van with no lift gate unless you order one. Our collector did not own a forklift. That is the single most common logistics problem for residential and hobby buyers, and there are three workable answers: pay for a lift-gate delivery and a pallet jack on a smooth surface, borrow a skid steer or tractor with forks from a neighbor, or schedule a terminal pickup and rent a trailer. Rolling a crated column off a truck with pipe and prybars is how people get hurt, and we will not recommend it.

Installation itself is not exotic — layout, drill anchors, stand the columns, set the crossbeam or baseplate, plumb and shim, run hydraulics and the electrical drop, bleed the system, adjust the equalization cables and locks, then load test. But it is a two-person job with a rotary hammer and a real level, and a millimeter of column lean gets multiplied at the top of the travel. He chose to have us install, mostly because he wanted the anchor torque and lock adjustment done by someone who does it weekly. Plenty of buyers assemble their own, and if that is you, we will ship the equipment and answer the phone while you work. Either way, budget for a dedicated 220V circuit — most single-phase power units on a 2 post car lift want their own 20 or 30 amp breaker, and running one off an extension cord is a service call waiting to happen.

The First Transmission Job

Six weeks after install he pulled the automatic out of the old cruiser, and that job is where the equipment earned its keep. On a two-post the drivetrain hangs completely free — no ramps or runways under the car, no fighting for angle around a crossmember, nothing between the transmission jack and the tunnel. He set the car at chest height on the locks, dropped the driveshaft, unbolted the crossmember, supported the pan, and walked the unit out from under the car on casters. His words: the same job on jack stands two years earlier took a weekend and cost him a bruised forearm.

Two things we drilled into him beforehand. First, always park on the mechanical locks, not on hydraulic pressure, before any part of your body goes under the vehicle — and listen for both latches to engage. Second, center of gravity moves when you remove a five-hundred-pound assembly from the middle of the car. Pulling a heavy trans, an engine, or a fuel tank shifts weight distribution, and on a two-post that load lives entirely on four arms and pads. Keep the pads square in the manufacturer’s lift points, snug the arm restraints, and do not push a marginal-capacity setup. His heaviest vehicle is under six thousand pounds against a ten-thousand-pound rating, which is exactly the margin we like for hobby use where a car may sit up on a 2 post car lift for days between work sessions.

Year One Verdict and What We’d Do Differently

Twelve months in, the equipment gets used far more than he predicted. That is the pattern we see with collectors: the lift starts as a transmission-job tool and becomes the way everything gets done, from oil and filter changes to exhaust work to chasing a fuel leak. Maintenance so far has been trivial — check fluid level, wipe the columns, grease the carriage slide blocks, eyeball the equalization cables for fraying, and cycle the locks. Annual inspection is on his calendar, and we told him what we tell every owner: a two-post is simple mechanical equipment that will run for thirty years if you keep fluid in it and stop ignoring small noises.

What we would change is the wiring plan. He ran the 220V drop after the columns were standing, which meant chasing conduit around an already-installed unit and adding an unnecessary junction. Rough the power in during layout. The second thing: he initially wanted the cheapest thing that would hold a car, and he now says he is glad he spent a bit more for a name-brand unit with parts availability — because the thing that kills a bargain lift is not the steel, it is discovering nobody stocks the lock latch or the equalization cable four years later.
