A third-generation family-owned garage in east-central Iowa asked us to spec a 2 post car lift for the transmission bay after decades of dropping units on a floor jack and a pair of stands. The grandfather started the shop in 1962, the son ran it through the eighties, and the grandson is finally putting real lifts in the transmission bays. Transmission service is the workload driver on this particular 2 post car lift decision — everything from height under the crossmember to the crate weight for freight to how the transmission jack tucks under a column at working height matters more than any other job in the shop.

Why transmission work drives 2 post car lift capacity

Transmission service isn’t heavy-vehicle service, but it’s heavy-under-vehicle service. A 10R80 pulls out of an F-150 at about 240 lbs. An Allison 1000 out of a 3500HD is over 430 lbs. A ZF 8HP swap on a Ram 1500 is 220 lbs. All those numbers land on a transmission jack, but the jack rides on the same shop floor the vehicle is over, and every pound on the jack is a pound the tech is guiding with two hands while looking up through a valve body. That’s why capacity on a transmission-focused 2 post car lift isn’t primarily about vehicle weight — it’s about the vehicle staying rock-solid at full rise while a technician works one-handed under it.

For that use case we spec 12,000 lb minimum, three-stage front arms, and Gold Label arm restraints. A 10,000 lb lift will hold a Ram 2500 with a Cummins, but the marginal capacity headroom matters when someone is walking under the vehicle for the fourth time with a torque wrench. The east-central Iowa shop landed on a Rotary SPO12 baseplate with a 12,000 lb column rating and 74-inch rise — enough headroom to fit a tall tech under the transmission bell housing without stooping, and enough capacity to shrug off the load imbalance when the unit comes out and the vehicle instantly loses 400 lbs of front-half mass.

Column height and transmission jack clearance

The under-lift dimension that matters most for transmission work is the pinch-weld pad rise height minus the standing height of the technician. A 74-inch pinch-weld rise on a 2 post car lift, minus a 68-inch tech, gives you six inches of headroom above the tech’s cap — meaning the transmission crossmember is right at eye level, exactly where you want it. Drop the rise to 68 inches on a bargain lift and now the tech is crouched under the drivetrain trying to guide a jack under a hot torque converter. Six inches of rise height is the difference between transmission bay productivity and shoulder injuries.

The other dimension is drive-thru clearance at floor level, because a transmission jack rolls in from the side, not the front. Roll-in width between columns needs to be at least 100 inches on the SPO12 baseplate. The east-central Iowa shop had a Norco 72750B jack (2,200 lb rated) that measured 28 inches wide with saddle plates deployed. Roll-in from the driver’s side clears the column by 36 inches — plenty for the jack plus a tech walking alongside it. Symmetric columns on this bay put the roll-in perfectly under the vehicle center, which is exactly where a transmission drops.

Real dimensions for pulling a Ford 10R80

A Ford 10R80 transmission out of an F-150 crew cab requires: torque converter drain, front driveshaft removal, transfer case (if 4WD), crossmember drop, cooler-line disconnect, transmission harness disconnect, torque converter bolt removal, bell housing bolt removal, and the actual drop. Under a 2 post car lift with 74-inch pad rise, an F-150 sits with the transmission crossmember about 65 inches off the shop floor, which is a comfortable working height for the crossmember bolts. Total floor-to-transmission-bottom is around 60 inches — again, right at the shoulder for a standing tech.

What the numbers mean in practice: pull time on a 10R80 with a proper lift and transmission jack is around 3.5 hours, versus 6 hours on stands. That two-and-a-half hour delta, at the shop’s $155 effective bay rate, is $388 of margin per transmission job. If the shop does one transmission a week for twenty years, the lift’s contribution to gross is $404,000 — enough to buy every 2 post car lift in the shop three times over. The lift isn’t a cost center in a transmission bay; it’s the profit center that makes the workflow economical in the first place.

Freight logistics from the factory to east-central Iowa

Freight from the Rotary factory in Madison, Indiana, to east-central Iowa is a two-day LTL move on a 53-foot dry van. The 2 post car lift crate is 168 inches long by 40 inches wide by 30 inches tall, palletized with columns nested and arms strapped separately. Total shipping weight for the SPO12 with three-stage arms is 1,890 lbs. Freight class 85. LTL freight from Madison to Cedar Rapids ran the shop $412 on the invoice, which is a fair number for that lane and that weight.

The delivery window from LTL carriers is a four-hour appointment slot, usually 8am to noon or noon to 4pm. Have someone at the shop the whole window — the driver will not wait, and a missed appointment reschedules the delivery two to three business days out. If your shop has a receiving door on a loading dock, the freight is a straight roll-off. If your shop has grade-level parking only, you need a forklift with a 4,000 lb rated fork or a liftgate at the trailer. We’ve done both, and the forklift is faster if you have one on the property.

Unloading without a forklift: what actually works

The east-central Iowa shop had a 5,000 lb forklift on the property, which made unloading a ten-minute job. If they hadn’t, the alternatives are: a rented telehandler for the day ($350 with delivery), a liftgate on the LTL truck ($95 to $125 upcharge), or LTL terminal pickup where you drive to the freight yard with your own trailer and load off their dock. Terminal pickup saves the liftgate fee but adds a half-day of your time and a truck-and-trailer capable of hauling a 1,900 lb crate on an 8-foot base — most shop pickups qualify.

What doesn’t work is trying to unload a 2 post car lift crate with a couple of guys, pallet-jack rollers, and an inclined ramp. We’ve been asked to price replacement freight for shops that tried that and cracked a column base. The crate is too long and too top-heavy to safely tilt off the trailer bed onto rollers. If you don’t have proper unloading equipment, add the liftgate fee to your quote and put the crate on the shop floor cleanly the first time. A cracked column at delivery is a warranty conversation that isn’t a warranty conversation, because it happened during unloading.

Anchor bolt install on a shop floor that’s seen 60 years

The east-central Iowa shop’s transmission bay slab was poured in 1962 and topped in 1987. Two-lift-thick, four inches nominal, expansion joints every fifteen feet, some visible cracks around the old drain pit that had been filled in. Before we quoted the install we brought a rotary hammer and did a core sample — the slab was actually five inches at the lift bay because it had been ramped up for the drain pit fill. Old shops sometimes hide a stronger floor than they look on the surface, and sometimes the reverse.

For that slab we used 3/4-inch by 5.5-inch wedge anchors, drilled to 4 inches embedment depth, torqued to 110 ft-lbs. Each column takes six anchors. The install went cleanly — no anchor rejection, no drill-out for a second try, no epoxy fallback. If your shop is older than 40 years and you don’t know the pour spec, budget for a core sample as a separate $150 line before we quote the 2 post car lift install. That number is much cheaper than pulling a lift back off the floor because the anchors won’t hold torque.

What the third generation buys that the first didn’t

The grandfather in the story was a phenomenal mechanic and a lousy investor in tools — he ran the shop for forty years on jack stands, a floor jack, and a rebuilt frame machine. The son upgraded to a 4-post drive-on and one old two-post that mostly sat unused because the arms didn’t reach modern truck pinch welds. The grandson is putting a Rotary SPO12 in each of the three service bays and a scissor mid-rise in the express bay. What the third generation buys is capacity per bay-hour — the ability to turn a transmission in three-and-a-half hours instead of six.

That’s the pattern we see across east-central Iowa’s older family shops. The 2 post car lift replaces the jack-stand era; the modern arm geometry replaces the underdesigned two-post from the 1990s; and the ALI Gold Label paperwork replaces the insurance-audit anxiety that used to live in every shop office. The grandfather would have laughed at spending $6,000 on a lift. The grandson can prove the payback in 18 months and pay off the rest of the shop over the next twenty years.
