A heavy-duty truck shop owner outside Dubuque called us in February because he wanted a 2 post car lift dedicated entirely to transmission work — pulling units out of three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups all day long, sometimes light medium-duty. He had a bay, he had a floor, and he had a budget number in his head. What he did not have was any clear idea what his electrical service could actually feed. That conversation turned into a two-hour walkthrough of panel capacity, single-phase versus three-phase, conduit runs, and where the real money hides in a lift project. This article is that walkthrough written down, with the numbers we quote and the mistakes we watch shops make.

Why Transmission Work Changes the Lift Spec
General service and transmission service put very different demands on a two-post. A general repair bay cycles the lift a lot but the vehicle usually goes to a comfortable working height and comes back down within the hour. Transmission work means the truck goes up, stays up, and the technician spends time underneath with a jack, a bellhousing full of fluid, and a unit that can weigh three hundred pounds swinging around at chest height. Duration under load matters, and so does the clearance profile.
For the Dubuque shop, that meant three things. First, capacity headroom — his heaviest regular vehicle was around 8,500 pounds curb, so we spec’d a 12,000 pound unit rather than a 10,000, because running a lift near its rated maximum every single day is how you wear carriage slide blocks prematurely. Second, arm geometry: asymmetric arms are great for door swing on cars, but a transmission shop pulling long-wheelbase trucks wants symmetric or a true adjustable configuration so the truck sits centered and the drivetrain is accessible from both sides. Third, overhead versus baseplate. He had a 14-foot ceiling with no obstructions, so a clear-floor overhead unit was the obvious answer. A transmission jack rolling under a baseplate crossbar all day is a nuisance nobody should sign up for voluntarily. Getting these right up front is what separates a productive bay from an expensive regret.
Single-Phase Versus Three-Phase: The Decision That Sets Your Budget
Almost every two-post power unit is available in three configurations: 208-230V single-phase, 208-230V three-phase, and 460V three-phase. The motors are typically 2 to 3 horsepower on standard-capacity units and 3 to 5 on heavier models. Single-phase is what most independent shops and every home garage actually have available, and it works fine — the trade-off is higher amp draw and slightly slower rise time under full load.
A 220V single-phase 2 HP power unit draws roughly 20 to 25 amps at startup and settles considerably lower during the lift stroke, which is why we spec a dedicated 30-amp two-pole breaker on 10 AWG wire for most residential and light-commercial installs. The same motor in three-phase pulls maybe half the current per leg, runs cooler, and lasts longer under heavy duty cycles. If a building already has three-phase at the panel — and a lot of older Dubuque industrial buildings along the river do, because they were wired for machinery decades ago — take it. If it does not, do not bring in three-phase service just for one lift. The utility charges to run three-phase to a building that lacks it will exceed the cost of the entire lift, often by a wide margin. A rotary phase converter is sometimes the middle path for shops that have several three-phase machines, but for a single 2 post car lift it is rarely worth the complexity.
Panel Capacity, Breaker Sizing, and Conduit Runs
Before anyone orders equipment we want to see a photo of the panel with the door open. What we are looking for is total service size, how much of it is already committed, and whether there are two adjacent open slots for a two-pole breaker. A 100-amp service in an older building with a compressor, a welder, and shop heat already on it may not have room, and finding that out after the lift arrives on a freight truck is a bad afternoon for everybody.
The wiring itself is straightforward. Run 10 AWG in conduit from the panel to a disconnect or a properly rated receptacle within reach of the power unit, which mounts on the column. Voltage drop matters on long runs — past about eighty feet we step up to 8 AWG, because a motor starved for voltage draws more current, heats up, and eventually cooks a start capacitor or a winding. Iowa and Illinois jurisdictions generally require the connection be made by a licensed electrician and inspected, and we strongly recommend that regardless of what the local rules technically demand. We install the lift, plumb it, level the columns, torque the anchors, and test it. We do not pull permits for electrical work, and any installer who tells you they will handle the wiring themselves without a license is cutting a corner you will not enjoy later. Budget for the electrician as a separate line item from day one.
Concrete: The Requirement Nobody Wants to Hear
We field this question constantly, usually from someone who has already measured their slab and is hoping we will tell them it is enough. The standard requirement for a 10,000 to 12,000 pound two-post is four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete, and most manufacturers want more like four and a quarter to five inches for the heavier capacities. That thickness has to be continuous under both columns, and the slab has to be cured — new concrete needs at least 28 days before anchors go in.
The Dubuque shop had a floor poured in the 1970s and nobody had documentation. We cored two test holes, found five and a half inches of good material with rebar, and proceeded. That is a good outcome. The bad outcome, which we see maybe once a month, is a shop that cores at three inches over gravel fill. In that case the fix is cutting out and pouring two footings roughly four feet square by twelve inches deep under each column, which adds a meaningful cost and a month of waiting to the project. It is not optional and there is no clever anchor that gets around it — an anchor bolt is only as strong as the concrete it is embedded in. The Full Cost Breakdown, Lift Through Commissioning
Here is how a project actually prices out, in tiers rather than exact figures because freight and site conditions move the number. The equipment itself is the biggest single line. A budget-tier 9,000 to 10,000 pound unit from a value brand lands in the low four figures. A quality mid-range 10,000 pound BendPak or Atlas sits in the mid four figures. Commercial-grade Rotary or Challenger in 12,000 pound capacity runs upper four figures to low five figures depending on configuration and options.
Freight is the line item that surprises people most. A two-post ships on a pallet at around 1,800 to 2,400 pounds and requires either a forklift or a liftgate at delivery. If you have a forklift, say so — it saves several hundred dollars. Installation by our crew runs in the high three figures to low four figures for a standard bay, more if we are working around obstructions or need to relocate the power unit. Electrical from a licensed contractor typically adds a mid three-figure to low four-figure amount depending on panel distance and whether a new breaker or subpanel is involved. Concrete remediation, if needed, is its own project. Add it all up and a properly installed commercial 2 post car lift is realistically a low-to-mid five-figure project for a shop, or roughly half that for a well-sited residential install with a good slab. Anyone quoting you dramatically less has left something out.
Options Worth Paying For and Options That Are Not
After the base decision, the option sheet is where shops either invest well or waste money. Worth paying for, in our experience: heavy-duty drop-end arms, which give you a lower pad height and make a low-clearance vehicle possible without ramps. Screw-up telescoping pads with a good adapter set, because a truck frame and a unibody car want completely different contact points and cheap adapters get lost or crushed. A padded overhead shutoff bar if you are running an overhead unit in a bay where tall vehicles come through. And a proper single-point safety release, which lets one technician lower the lift without walking around the vehicle.
Less worth it for most shops: powder-coat color upgrades, LED column lighting, and integrated air lines on units that will sit next to a perfectly good reel. Extended arms for wide-track vehicles are a case-by-case call — a transmission shop working exclusively on trucks probably wants them, a general repair bay probably does not. The Dubuque owner spent his option budget on drop-end arms and a full truck adapter set and skipped everything else, which we thought was exactly the right allocation. He has been running that bay hard for two years now with nothing but fluid checks and a cable tension adjustment.
