Picking a 2 post car lift for transmission service is a different decision than picking one for tires or brakes, and a municipal fleet manager in the Quad Cities learned that the hard way last spring. His crew was pulling transmissions out of half-ton pickups and mid-size sedans on a pair of aging asymmetric columns with arms that wouldn’t clear the pinch weld pockets cleanly. Why ALI Gold Certification Matters More on Municipal Contracts

ALI Gold certification isn’t a marketing badge. It means an independent third party validated the lift’s structural design, load-holding devices, and the manufacturer’s ability to keep building it to that standard. For a municipal fleet manager, that label often stops an argument before it starts. City risk managers, insurance carriers, and state OSHA-equivalent inspectors all recognize the ALI/ETL Gold label, and a shop that can’t produce it tends to get written up or quietly told to stop using the equipment. We’ve watched that play out in more than one public works garage across eastern Iowa and western Illinois.

The practical piece is that Gold certification comes with a documented capacity rating and a documented load-holding mechanism, which matters enormously when you’re removing a transmission. The moment you unbolt a driveline component, you change the vehicle’s center of gravity. A certified lift’s mechanical locks are tested to hold under that shifted load, not just under a balanced static load. Non-certified imports sometimes rate their capacity optimistically and their locks even more optimistically. When a Quad Cities fleet asks us to quote a lift that will see daily transmission drops, we only quote Rotary or Challenger columns carrying the current ALI Gold label, and we hand over the certification paperwork with the install packet so it lives in the shop’s safety binder instead of a lost email.

Symmetric vs. Asymmetric for Drivetrain Access

Most fleets default to asymmetric because the columns rotate and the doors open easier. That’s genuinely useful for a service writer doing quick oil changes on Impalas. But for transmission work, the calculation flips. Asymmetric puts roughly 30 percent of the vehicle ahead of the columns and 70 percent behind, which means the driver’s door swings clear but you’re also standing between the front column and the bellhousing every time you reach up with a jack.

Symmetric columns split the load evenly and give you a wider, more open workspace under the middle of the chassis. When a tech is wrestling a 4L60E or an Allison out of a fleet pickup with a transmission jack, that centerline clearance is what lets the jack roll straight in and straight out without a three-point turn. We’ve configured plenty of Quad Cities fleet bays with a symmetric setup on the transmission stall and asymmetric on the general service stalls, and nobody has ever complained about that split. If you only have room for one bay, a lift with an expandable top beam that supports both wide and narrow drive-thru configurations gives you flexibility to change your mind later. Ask us which columns in the Rotary and Challenger lines support that adjustment, because not all of them do, and the spec sheets don’t always make it obvious.

Capacity: Why 10,000 lb Is Usually Right and Sometimes Isn’t

Nearly every fleet manager we talk to guesses high on capacity. We had a call recently where the shop wanted 14,000 lb because they assumed they already owned 14s. When we asked what their heaviest vehicle actually weighed, the honest answer was around 6,500 lb — a loaded three-quarter-ton with a service body. A 10,000 lb 2 post car lift handles that with room to spare.

The exception is a municipal fleet that also touches ambulances, dump-body one-tons, or box trucks. Those cross 10,000 lb in a hurry, and once you factor in a full water tank or a salt spreader, you’re into 12,000 or 15,000 lb territory. When that’s the case we recommend stepping up rather than hoping, because a two-post at 95 percent of rating for years on end wears cables, sheaves, and locks faster than a lift loafing at 60 percent. Higher capacity columns also tend to come with taller lifting height and wider arm sweeps, which pays off on transmission work. The cost delta between a 10K and a 12K is real but not dramatic — it’s a tier, not a doubling. Weigh your five heaviest units on a certified scale before you order. We’d rather quote you accurately than sell you a lift you outgrow in two years.

Concrete: The Thing That Kills More Installs Than Anything Else

Concrete is where two-post projects die. Manufacturers typically require a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb unit, and more for higher capacities. We have had customers swear their slab was six inches and drill down to find four and change over a vapor barrier, with rebar in the wrong place. One shop we visited in a nearby county had a slab that measured five inches at the door and less than four at the back of the bay because of a grade change nobody documented in 1978.

Before we quote an install, we core or at least hammer-drill a test hole and check thickness and aggregate quality. If the slab doesn’t meet spec, the fix isn’t complicated — you cut out a pad section, pour a proper footing to the manufacturer’s dimensions, and let it cure the full 28 days. Skipping that is how anchors pull, and anchor pull-out under load is the failure mode that hurts people. Municipal garages built in the mid-century era are especially suspect because the original bays weren’t designed for anything but drive-on inspection. Get the slab verified first. Everything else about the project is easy by comparison.

Clear Floor vs. Overhead in a Fleet Bay

Overhead two-post lifts run the equalization cables and hydraulic line through a top beam, which keeps the floor completely open. Clear-floor units route everything through a shallow floor channel and leave the ceiling free. Which one you want depends on your building, not on your preference.

In fleet bays we frequently run into a ceiling constraint. One customer had a hard 139-inch maximum height, which rules out most overhead configurations once you account for the top beam and the shutoff bar. Another had ductwork and a radiant tube heater running directly over the intended bay centerline. Both of those situations point to a baseplate or clear-floor design. Conversely, if your floor drains, trench drains, or in-floor heat lines cross the bay, cutting a channel for a clear-floor unit gets ugly fast, and an overhead is the better answer. For transmission work specifically we lean slightly toward overhead when ceiling height allows, because the overhead shutoff bar protects roof racks and light bars on fleet vehicles, and because a genuinely open floor lets you roll a transmission jack and a drain cart in from any direction. Measure your ceiling at the lowest obstruction, not at the peak, and send us a photo. We’ll tell you honestly which configuration fits.

Troubleshooting a 2 Post Car Lift That Won’t Rise

We get this call constantly, and it usually has a simple answer. A shop phoned us about a two-post where the motor ran, the reservoir had fluid, and nothing was leaking, but the carriages wouldn’t move. Nine times out of ten that’s one of three things: air trapped in the cylinder, a failed or bypassing pump, or a lowering valve that isn’t fully closing.

Start with fluid level checked at the full-down position, not mid-travel, because a partially raised carriage holds oil in the cylinders and makes the tank look low. Then cycle the lift a dozen times through its full range to bleed air. If it still won’t rise, put a gauge on the pressure port. A pump that spins but won’t build pressure is either worn or has a stuck relief valve, and on a unit past ten years old, replacing the power unit is usually cheaper than chasing internals. If it builds pressure but won’t hold, you’re looking at cylinder seals or a leaking check valve. On any 2 post car lift, resist the temptation to crank the relief valve to force more lift — that’s how you overpressure a cylinder. Maintenance and Inspection Cadence That Keeps Inspectors Happy

ALI recommends an annual inspection by a qualified lift inspector, and for municipal fleets we treat that as mandatory rather than advisory. Between annual inspections, the daily and monthly items are what actually prevent failures. Daily: eyeball the cables and arm restraints, listen for the locks clicking through every notch on the way up, and confirm the safety releases seat when you lower onto them. Monthly: grease the carriage slide blocks and arm pivots, check anchor bolt torque, and inspect the equalization cables at the sheaves where they wear first.

Cables are the single most-replaced wear item on a two-post, and they don’t fail silently — you’ll see broken strands, flat spots, or one carriage sitting visibly lower than the other. Replace them in pairs, always, and replace the sheaves if they’re grooved. Document everything.
