The Tape Measure Comes First, Not the Catalog
Every collector we talk to starts with a model number they saw online. We start with three numbers instead: finished ceiling height, the lowest obstruction in the bay, and the concrete thickness. In this case the garage measured 11 feet 4 inches to the joists, but a garage door opener rail and a run of conduit dropped the real usable clearance to about 10 feet 9 inches over the exact spot he wanted the columns. That single measurement ruled out the clearfloor overhead model he had bookmarked and pushed us toward a baseplate design, where the equalization cables and hydraulic line run across the floor in a low ramp instead of over your head.
Concrete was the second gate. He thought he had six inches. A core sample near the middle of the bay came back at four and a quarter with no rebar visible, which is common in central Iowa garages poured in the eighties. That does not automatically kill the project. It means either a saw-cut and pour of two engineered footing pads or stepping down to a lower-capacity column with a smaller anchor pattern. We priced both. He chose the footings because he already knew he wanted the option to raise a three-quarter-ton pickup someday, and pouring pads once costs far less than replacing a whole setup in three years. That conversation took twenty minutes and saved him a five-figure regret.
Ceiling Height and Door Swing on the Same Drawing
Ceiling height gets all the attention and door swing gets forgotten, then the owner discovers his overhead door panels sweep through the exact arc where a column wants to stand. We draw both on the same sketch before anything is ordered. On a standard 7-foot residential sectional door, the top panel rides back roughly 12 to 14 inches off the wall as it opens, and the track brackets steal another few inches of side clearance. If your column base lands inside that footprint, the door will physically strike the column or you will lose the ability to open the door with a vehicle raised, which defeats the purpose.
For this collector we set the columns 26 inches behind the door opening and shifted the whole assembly nine inches toward the interior wall. That left him room to open the door fully with a car in the air, which matters more than people expect the first time they need to push a rolling toolbox out of the way or run a torch without filling the garage with smoke. The other detail we insist on is arm swing at floor level. A 2 post car lift with drop-end arms needs clear floor on both sides for the arms to rotate out to their pickup points, and a workbench that sits 14 inches too close will have you cursing every time you load a long-wheelbase vehicle. We tape the arm arcs on the concrete before we drill a single hole.
Choosing Between Baseplate and Clearfloor for a Collection
Baseplate models get treated as the consolation prize, and that is unfair. In a low-ceiling collector garage they are frequently the better answer. The overhead crossbar on a clearfloor design is where the equalization cables and shutoff bar live, and it sets your maximum rise. Take it away and your limit becomes the column height plus whatever you can clear on the roof of the vehicle, which in a 10-foot-9 bay usually means more usable rise, not less. The tradeoff is that low crossover ramp on the floor, which is a genuine nuisance if you roll transmission jacks through the bay all day. For a hobbyist working on one car at a time, it disappears from your awareness inside a week.
Capacity is the other decision, and collectors routinely overbuy. If your heaviest vehicle is under 6,000 pounds, a 9,000 or 10,000 lb unit has margin to spare. We still nudge people toward 10,000 for one reason: resale and future flexibility. A 10,000 lb symmetric or asymmetric column costs modestly more than a 9,000 and covers a half-ton pickup without you doing arithmetic in your head at seven at night. Where we push back is the jump to 15,000, which brings taller columns, a bigger anchor pattern, and a real electrical conversation that rarely pays off in a private garage. Match the equipment to the fleet you actually own, plus one hypothetical truck.
Install Day and the First Ninety Days
Installation on this job ran a single day plus a return trip after the footing pads cured. Our crew set the columns, plumbed the power unit, ran the hydraulic line and equalization cables, torqued anchors to spec with a calibrated wrench, and then cycled the unit empty a dozen times to bleed air and verify both carriages arrived at the same height at every stop. That last step is where a lot of self-installs go sideways. If the carriages are out of sync by even an inch and a half, the safety locks will engage unevenly and you will hear it long before you see it.
The first ninety days matter more than the next five years. Hydraulic systems seat themselves, anchor bolts relax slightly as the epoxy and concrete settle, and cables stretch. We told him to re-torque anchors at 30 days, check the fluid level after the first ten cycles, and grease the arm pivots and the column slide blocks monthly. He also learned the habit that separates people who keep a 2 post car lift for twenty years from people who replace one in eight: always lower the vehicle onto the mechanical safety locks rather than parking it on hydraulic pressure. The whole reason he bought the thing was a clicking front end on that sport coupe, and CV axle work is exactly where a two post earns its money. On jack stands you get maybe eleven inches of clearance, you are working on your back with your arms above your face, and the suspension is loaded in a way that fights you. Raised to chest height with the wheels hanging free, the geometry changes completely. The lower control arm droops, the axle comes out of the knuckle at an angle that lets you separate it without an impossible amount of prying, and you can see the inner joint splines instead of feeling for them.
He did both front half-shafts in an afternoon, which he told us would have been a full weekend on the ground. The practical detail worth stealing: on a 2 post car lift the wheels are free, so you can rotate the hub to line up the inner joint with the transaxle and you can spin the new axle to seat the circlip and confirm it clicked home. You also get honest access to the boot clamps for inspection on the other side rather than guessing. What Went Wrong, Honestly

First, one of his vehicles is a low-clearance coupe with a front air dam, and the standard drop-end arm pads still would not slide under the pinch weld without contact. We shipped him a set of low-profile adapter pads with a shorter stack height and that solved it, but it should have been caught during our site visit. If you own anything with less than four and a half inches of ground clearance, say so out loud before the order goes in.
Second, he underestimated lighting. A vehicle at chest height casts a shadow over the entire work area, and his single center-mounted fixture became useless the day the unit went in. He added two LED shop strips mounted on the side walls at roughly seven feet, aimed inward, plus a magnetic-base work light. Cheap fix, and it transformed the experience. Year One Verdict and What We’d Tell the Next Collector
Nine months in we came back for a service inspection: cables at proper tension, anchor torque holding, safety locks engaging crisply on both columns, no cylinder weep, arm pivots slightly dry and re-greased. That is a healthy unit and a well-treated one. His only complaint was that he wished he had done it a decade earlier, which is the single most common sentence we hear from collectors after year one. The second most common is that they now want a four post for long-term storage alongside it, which is a legitimate follow-up conversation rather than a sign the first purchase was wrong.
