A vehicle collector in Urbandale with a modest four-car garage and a decade-old dream of standing under his own suspension work called us two summers ago. He wanted a 2 post car lift and he had the ceiling for it, but he was not sure his slab was up to the load. That single question — is my concrete good enough — is the one collectors get most wrong on their own. Why Concrete Is the First Question, Not the Last

The one number that decides whether a 2 post car lift can safely go in your garage is concrete thickness at 3,000 psi minimum. Every manufacturer publishes a spec, usually 4 to 6 inches depending on the load rating of the lift. A 10,000-pound overhead symmetric wants 4 inches minimum at 3,000 psi. A 12,000-pound wants 5. A 15,000-pound baseplate can want 6 inches or more. Those numbers are for the anchor pull-out load, and they exist because a column pulling out of the floor under a loaded lift is the failure mode that hurts people.

Collectors almost always overestimate their slab. Most residential garages in Iowa were poured with a 4-inch slab at 3,000 psi if they were done right and 3 inches at 2,500 if the concrete crew was cutting corners. There is no way to know without a core sample. We drill a two-inch plug from a corner of the bay, measure the thickness, and send the plug for compression testing if we cannot verify the mix. That is $200 in testing that can save a five-figure equipment write-off, and every collector we work with agrees to it once we explain the alternative.

Rebar Patterns and Why They Matter Less Than You Think

Rebar in a residential slab is helpful but not required for a 2 post car lift install if the concrete is thick enough. The anchor loads are compression at the anchor bolt and shear at the concrete surface. A properly cured 5-inch slab at 3,500 psi will hold anchors reliably even without rebar. What rebar does is control cracking as the slab ages and moves through temperature cycles, which is why we prefer to see it but do not require it. If the pour is old and cracked, rebar becomes more important because the cracks limit where we can place anchors.

The Urbandale collector had a slab we could not read from the surface. No visible cracks, but he did not know if there was rebar in it and he had no records. We cored, measured 4.5 inches of solid concrete, ran the compression test at 4,100 psi, and could not find rebar in the sample. We recommended proceeding with anchor placement centered in the bay away from the slab edges, using the manufacturer-spec anchors at the manufacturer-spec torque. He has run the lift for a year without issue. Rebar would have been nice, but 4.5 inches at 4,100 psi is a stronger substrate than most shops we install into.

Anchor Selection and Placement

The anchor you use in a 2 post car lift install matters as much as the concrete. Every commercial-grade lift ships with wedge-style expansion anchors sized for the column base plate. Never substitute an anchor. Never use an anchor rated for less pull-out load. Never install an anchor within four inches of a slab edge or an expansion joint, because the concrete around the anchor needs enough mass to resist the pull-out force. Those three rules cover about ninety percent of anchor failures.

On the Urbandale install we set anchors nine inches back from the edge of the pour on both columns. The bay was tight enough that we had to be careful about placement, and we ended up rotating one column by about three inches from the buyer’s preferred position to get clear of an old expansion joint. He noticed. He asked why. We explained. He got it. That kind of conversation is why we install every lift we sell instead of shipping and hoping — a homeowner doing a self-install would not have seen the expansion joint problem until the concrete cracked years later. The First Suspension Job on the New Lift

Four months after install he tackled the first real project — a full shock and strut replacement on one of his collection cars. Suspension work is exactly the job a 2 post car lift makes easier, because the wheels hang free and the control arms drop into their unloaded position where the ball joints and tie rod ends can be worked without preload. He replaced all four struts, both rear shocks, and swapped in new upper mounts in a single Saturday. On jack stands the same job had taken him a full weekend of laying on his back.

He told us he did not fully understand what the lift was going to do for him until that project. The physical difference between crouching under a car and standing under a car changes what jobs a person is willing to attempt at home. He said he had been putting off the strut job for two years because he dreaded the position on jack stands. On the lift it was almost enjoyable. That is the psychological cost of not owning a lift, and it does not show up in any purchase decision but it should. Every collector we sell to eventually tells us the same thing.

Slab Failure Signs to Watch For

Even a well-installed 2 post car lift can develop concrete problems if the slab was marginal to begin with. The warning signs are: radial cracks emerging from an anchor location, visible movement of a column under load, or spalling around the anchor washer. Any one of those is a hard stop — the lift comes down until we can look at it. We tell every home installer to inspect the anchors every six months and photograph them. A phone photo is documentation. If a crack appears in year four you want to know if it was there in year one.

The Urbandale collector has done exactly that. Twelve months in, zero cracking, zero movement, all anchors at full torque on the annual check. His slab has held up better than expected and we are not surprised because the compression test told us it would. He also has not overloaded the lift — his heaviest collection car is around 3,800 pounds and the lift is rated for 10,000. That headroom matters. Running a lift close to its rated capacity accelerates wear on the concrete, the cables, and the cylinders. A home collector almost never needs a bigger lift than 10,000 pounds and should not buy one just because more capacity feels safer.

What He Would Do Differently on Slab Prep

His hindsight advice on the concrete side of a 2 post car lift install is simple: pay for the core test before you sign the equipment purchase. He paid us $200 to core and test his slab before committing to the lift. Had the results come back at 2,000 psi or 3 inches thick, he would have had to either pour a new slab or pass on the whole project. Instead the test said go, and he could commit with confidence. Skipping the test is where collectors get burned. They order the equipment, pay for install, and then find out at the drill step that the concrete is not adequate.

If you are thinking about a 2 post car lift and you have any doubt about your slab, get the test. If your slab is definitely inadequate, you have three options: pour a new slab in the whole bay, saw-cut and repour just the anchor pads, or step down to a lower-capacity lift that has lighter anchor loads. All three are viable. All three are cheaper than the mistake of installing an inadequate anchor system and finding out at 10,000 pounds of load. The concrete question is not glamorous but it is the question that decides everything else about the project.
