A weekend mechanic in West Des Moines called us last winter with a photo of his garage, a tape measure, and a list of jobs he wanted to stop doing on his back. He had crawled under his truck for the last time to swap a header, and he was ready to buy a 2 post car lift for real. What he wanted was a straight-talk checklist — not a sales pitch — so he could pull the trigger without regretting the purchase two weekends later. We spent an evening working through the same fifteen-point list we use with every hobbyist buyer. Here is that checklist, exactly as we walked it, plus the layout decisions we made together.

Measure the ceiling before anything else

Ceiling height is the single most common reason a 2 post car lift buyer ends up with the wrong machine. He measured floor to the lowest obstruction — in his case, an exposed garage-door track — and came up with eleven feet even. That number matters more than the ceiling drywall height because the lift arms need to raise a vehicle up to the point where you can walk under it comfortably, not just barely miss the track. Eleven feet is workable for a baseplate lift but a hard no for most standard overhead configurations.

The next check was for future headroom. He is five-foot-ten, so he needs a minimum vehicle underside height of about six feet to stand up comfortably. With a truck at that height, the truck roof adds another six to seven feet, and lift columns and arms take another eight to twelve inches. That is why an eleven-foot ceiling with a tall pickup means baseplate architecture, shorter columns, and careful selection of arm geometry. If your ceiling is under twelve feet, plan on baseplate. If it is over twelve feet, overhead becomes an option and gives you a cleaner floor. Nothing else in the buyer’s checklist matters until this measurement is confirmed with a tape and a photograph.

Test the concrete before you sign anything

His slab was a standard 1990s attached-garage pour with unknown thickness. We told him to drill a small test hole in an out-of-the-way corner and measure. He came back with four and a quarter inches, which is under the four-and-a-half-inch minimum most manufacturers publish for a 10,000 pound 2 post car lift. That number would have been the end of the project if we had not talked about pads.

The fix was straightforward. He would cut two rectangular sections of the existing slab where the columns would sit, dig down six inches, tie in rebar, and pour footings six inches thick and three feet by three feet each. That gives the anchors real concrete to bite into and distributes load properly. Cost him a Saturday and about two hundred dollars in concrete and rebar. Now he has a slab that will hold anything he throws at it for the next thirty years. Never let a lift installer talk you into anchoring into thin concrete. Either pour pads or thicken the whole slab. A 2 post car lift is only as safe as the concrete under it, and that is not a corner to cut.

Match capacity to your heaviest vehicle plus margin

His heaviest vehicle is a diesel truck with a topper — call it 7,800 pounds curb, plus a trailer he sometimes leaves attached briefly while positioning. We asked what the heaviest thing he would ever put on the lift might be. He mentioned a friend’s dually diesel around 8,600 pounds. A 9,000 pound rated lift would technically handle it, but we do not spec at the rated ceiling for hobby use. Lifts last longer when they run at seventy to eighty percent of capacity, not full.

We steered him to a 10,000 pound machine, which gives him about a 15 percent margin on the friend’s truck and a 22 percent margin on his own. That margin extends component life on cables, cylinders, and locks. It also gives him room to grow — a larger truck purchase in five years does not force a lift upgrade. Going from 9K to 10K on a 2 post car lift usually adds only a couple hundred dollars in machine cost and pays for itself in longer service intervals. Overspec on capacity is one of the easiest right calls a home buyer can make, and we recommend it every time.

Design the bay for the jobs you actually do

His main workload is exhaust and driveline. Both need clear access from below with the wheels dangling — no obstruction under the drivetrain, no cross-bracing across the middle of the vehicle. That immediately pointed to a two-post rather than any four-post configuration. But the layout still needed thought. His garage is 22 feet wide and 24 feet deep. The lift needed to sit so that a full-length pickup would fit with the tailgate down and a wrench turner would still have three feet behind the truck to swing tools.

We chalked out three positions on his floor over a beer and settled on the one that gave him five feet in front, four feet behind, and enough side clearance to open both doors fully. Column spacing was symmetric because he did not need asymmetric loading for his current lineup. His workbench moved to the back wall to open the whole side aisle. His parts washer moved outside the bay footprint. Bay layout is what separates a lift you love from a lift you resent. Draw it on paper, tape it out on the floor, and stand in the imagined workspace for ten minutes before you commit to column positions. That last step catches ninety percent of layout mistakes before drill day.

Plan for power, air, and drainage

Most 2 post car lift powerpacks want a dedicated 220 volt single-phase circuit. He had a 220 outlet at the back of the garage from an old air compressor, but the run to the proposed lift position was thirty feet and used undersized wire. We told him to have an electrician pull a new 30-amp circuit on 10-gauge wire to a point within six feet of the powerpack. Not because the lift would refuse to run on the existing circuit, but because voltage sag at startup would shorten pump life over years of use.

Air was easier. He already had a compressor and air lines run to the ceiling, which is exactly where you want them for a lift bay — arms overhead, drops at each column, one at the workbench. Drainage was the surprise. His floor sloped away from the front door about half an inch over the lift footprint. That is fine for water runoff but it means the columns need shim washers under one side of each base to stay plumb. We measured, cut shims, and set the columns dead vertical. If your garage slopes noticeably, plan for shims and never let an installer skip that step. A lift out of plumb is a lift with premature cable and cylinder wear.

Choose arms and pads for your vehicle mix

Exhaust and driveline work means you spend a lot of time under the middle of the vehicle, which means the arms need to swing far enough forward and back to leave the whole underbody clear. Standard drop-end telescoping arms handle almost every vehicle from a compact sedan to a full-size pickup. He needed them to reach a long-wheelbase crew cab, so we spec’d the long-arm option on the front arms and standard rears. That gave him about six extra inches of forward reach without changing anything else.

Pads mattered too. His truck has aftermarket step rails that block some traditional pinch-weld pad positions. We suggested a set of stackable rubber adapter pads that raise the contact point by two inches and let the arms swing under the step rail without contact. Small detail, big quality-of-life improvement. He also picked up a set of frame cradles for lifting the classic muscle car project without pinch-weld damage. On a 2 post car lift, the pads and adapters are what turn a good machine into a great one for your specific vehicles. Spend an extra hundred dollars on the right adapters and thank yourself for the next twenty years.

Final walk-through before purchase

Once the checklist was complete, we had a machine spec, a bay layout, an electrical plan, and a concrete plan. Total time invested — one evening of measuring and about ninety minutes on the phone the following weekend. Total surprise cost — two hundred dollars for concrete pad work. Everything else came in at the number we quoted on the first call. That is what a proper pre-purchase process looks like, and it is why we make every hobbyist buyer walk through the same fifteen points before we take an order.

The lift went in on a Saturday six weeks later. Install took about six hours including load testing and training. His first job under it was the header swap that started the whole conversation. Total time on the header job — three hours, down from the eleven hours it had taken him on jack stands the previous winter. He said the machine paid for itself in reclaimed weekends before it paid for itself in dollars. That is the honest math on a 2 post car lift for a serious weekend mechanic. Do the checklist first, buy once, and enjoy your garage for the next twenty-plus years.
