The problem isn’t the lift. It’s almost always how the bay is laid out around it.

Myth: A 2 Post Car Lift Can’t Handle Wheel-Off Work

This is the biggest misconception we hear from newer EV shops opening up in the Des Moines area and smaller towns further southwest. The thinking goes that because EV batteries add weight and wheel bearing jobs need clean wheel access, a four-post or drive-on setup is safer. In reality, a 2 post car lift with frame-contact arms gives you full wheel-off access on both sides at once, which is exactly what wheel bearing service needs. You’re not fighting a runway or deck getting in the way of the hub.

What actually matters is capacity and pad placement, not post count. We’ve moved plenty of 9,000 to 10,000 lb two-post units for shops handling heavier trucks and SUVs, including EV platforms that run north of 6,000 lbs curb weight. As long as the lift is rated correctly and the arms are positioned on factory-approved lift points, a 2 post car lift handles wheel bearing service just as well as it handles brakes, struts, or exhaust work. The myth mostly comes from shops that never had someone lay out the bay properly in the first place, and that’s the real fix.

The Real Mistake Is Bay Layout, Not the Lift

Nine times out of ten when we walk into a southwest Iowa shop struggling with EV wheel bearing turnaround, the problem is where the 2 post car lift sits relative to everything else. Techs are walking around the lift arms to reach a torque cart, or the impact gun hose is stretched across the bay because the reel got mounted on the wrong wall. None of that is the lift’s fault. It’s a layout that was never planned around the actual workflow of pulling a hub, servicing it, and reinstalling.

We tell shop owners the same thing every time: measure the swing radius of the arms before you bolt anything to the floor, then place your parts washer, torque stand, and tool cart outside that swing but still within arm’s reach. On a lot of our jobs we’ve relocated superstructures on existing lifts rather than replacing entire units, because the base and columns were fine, just positioned wrong for the work being done. A 2 post car lift moved two feet closer to the wall, with the reel and cart repositioned, can cut real minutes off every single wheel bearing job.

Clearance and Concrete Come Before the Layout Conversation

Before we talk about where anything goes in the bay, we ask about ceiling clearance and floor condition, because those two things decide what’s even possible. Most shops we’ve measured in southwest Iowa run somewhere between 11 and 12 feet of clearance, which fits the large majority of two-post and four-post lifts without issue. If your building is on the shorter end, that limits which 2 post car lift models will actually raise a vehicle high enough for comfortable wheel bearing access without the tech ducking under crossmembers.

Concrete matters just as much. We’ve had jobs where a shop wanted to move an existing lift into a new bay, and before we set anchors we had to check slab thickness and rebar placement to make sure it could handle the load and the anchor pull-out rating. If your concrete is old or thin, that’s a conversation to have before you finalize where the lift goes, not after. On more than one job we’ve had to bring in a structural engineer’s opinion before removing or altering flooring near a lift pad, especially in older buildings that started life as something other than a repair shop.

Arm Configuration for EV Lift Points

EV platforms don’t always have the same lift points as the gas-powered version of the same body style, and that trips up shops that assume any pad position will work. Battery packs run along the floor pan on most EVs, which means frame-contact arms need to land on reinforced pinch points well outboard of where you’d normally set them on a comparable gas truck or car. Get this wrong and you risk pack damage, not just a bad lift.

This is where arm length and rotation range on your 2 post car lift actually matters for EV work specifically. Shorter arms that can’t reach the correct outboard points force techs to improvise with adapters or extensions, which slows the job and adds risk. When we spec a lift for a shop doing serious EV volume, we walk through the specific models they’re servicing and confirm the arm reach covers the actual lift points, not just a generic capacity number. That’s a five-minute conversation up front that saves a lot of headaches on the rack later.

Two-Bay Flow Beats a Single Overloaded Lift

We’ve had multiple southwest Iowa dealers and independent shops ask us to move a 2 post car lift over one bay to make room for new alignment equipment or a second lift, and it’s almost always the right call once volume picks up. Running wheel bearing jobs on the same single lift you use for everything else creates a bottleneck, especially when a car sits stuck mid-job because a tech got pulled onto something else.

A dedicated bay for wheel bearing and hub work, with its own tool cart, torque equipment, and parts staging, moves faster than a shared bay every time. We’ve relocated existing two-post units, reassembled lifts moved between locations, and installed second lifts specifically so shops could split heavier diagnostic and bearing work away from routine service. If you’re running one 2 post car lift for every job type in a growing EV shop, that’s usually the first thing we’d change before recommending you spend money on anything else.

Arm Inserts, Rust, and Delayed Maintenance

A wheel bearing shop puts more cycles on lift arms than a typical general repair bay because every job involves swinging the arms in and out for wheel access. We’ve seen arm inserts rust solid on lifts that get heavy daily use, to the point where adjusting pad height mid-job becomes a fight instead of a five-second task. That kind of delay adds up fast across a full day of wheel bearing appointments.

Before assuming you need new arms entirely, it’s worth having us look at whether the inserts can be freed up or whether a superstructure swap between lifts in your shop solves the problem cheaper. We’ve handled jobs where a shop expected to replace arms outright but ended up saving money by moving components between an existing 2 post car lift and a secondary unit instead. Either way, don’t let a stuck insert become a daily 20-minute delay. It’s a cheap fix compared to the labor hours lost waiting on it.

What to Ask Before You Buy or Relocate
