A city or county fleet bay doing brake service and rotor swaps runs a different pace than a general repair shop. You’re not doing one car a day — you’re cycling squad cars, pickups, dump trucks, and the occasional plow rig through the same bay, and every one of them needs to come off the ground fast. That’s exactly the kind of repetitive, high-cycle work a 2 post car lift is built for. Clear-floor access to the wheels and rotors, no ramps in the way, and a lift arm configuration that doesn’t fight you when you’re swapping calipers on a duty pickup one hour and a sedan the next.

The catch is that fleet vehicles vary more in weight and wheelbase than a typical retail shop’s traffic. We’ve had fleet managers tell us their heaviest unit is a Ram 2500 pushing close to 9,000 lbs, which means the lift’s rated capacity needs real headroom, not a number that’s barely adequate on the heaviest day. That headroom also matters for resale and reassignment down the road, since fleet equipment tends to outlast whatever vehicle it was bought for originally.

Freight, Unloading, and Forklift Logistics

This is where a lot of fleet install timelines go sideways, and it’s the first thing we ask about on every quote call: do you have a forklift on site? A crated two-post lift with its columns, arms, and power unit is heavy and awkward, and most freight carriers will only deliver curbside — they are not unloading it into your bay for you. If your facility doesn’t have a forklift or a loading dock, we build that into the install plan up front rather than finding out on delivery day when a semi is idling in the lot with no way to get the crate off the truck.

Ceiling Height and Bay Clearance

Southern Minnesota fleet garages tend to run taller than a typical home garage, which is good news, but we still measure rather than assume. A two-post lift needs enough overhead room for the vehicle to clear the top of the columns at full lift height, plus room for the technician to work standing underneath a raised rotor without ducking. Still, we plan for full-height clearance on every install because fleet bays get used for more than brakes over their lifetime — today it’s rotors, next year it might be a transmission pull. Building the bay around the lift’s maximum rise rather than just today’s task saves a retrofit headache later.

Concrete Requirements Nobody Wants to Hear About

We ask about concrete on every single quote call, and it’s the detail that catches more fleet managers off guard than anything else. A 2 post car lift needs a slab poured to a real minimum thickness, generally four and a half inches with rebar, and older municipal buildings sometimes have thinner, non-reinforced slabs from decades of patch repairs and additions. If your bay’s concrete doesn’t meet spec, that’s not a dealbreaker, but it does mean either a new pour in that section or picking a lift footprint that lands on the strongest part of the existing slab.

It’s worth doing this before you commit to a lift model, not after it arrives, because moving a bay’s planned location after the fact means re-routing floor space, doors, and sometimes the overhead power drop too.

Sizing the Lift to Your Fleet, Not Just One Vehicle

We hear this a lot: someone’s biggest vehicle weighs a known amount, so they want a lift rated just above it. That’s reasonable for a single-vehicle home garage, but a municipal fleet needs to plan for whatever gets added to the roster over the next ten or fifteen years. Squad car specs change, pickups get bigger, and public works adds equipment nobody anticipated when the bay was designed. We typically steer fleet buyers toward a two-post lift with capacity well above their current heaviest vehicle, specifically so the equipment doesn’t become the bottleneck when the fleet composition shifts.

This is also where drive-through clearance and center-to-center column spacing matter more than people expect. A wider fleet mix — from compact sedans to extended-cab trucks — needs a column spread that accommodates both without the technician fighting arm reach on the small end or door clearance on the big end. We size that spacing against your actual fleet roster, not a generic spec sheet number, which is part of why a phone conversation before ordering saves everyone a headache.

Power, Controls, and Technician Safety

A safety-first walkthrough of any 2 post car lift install has to include the power unit and controls, especially in a fleet shop with multiple technicians rotating through the same bay.
