It arrives as several thousand pounds of steel crated across multiple pallets, and how that freight gets off the truck determines whether your install day starts on schedule or gets pushed a week. Why Freight Planning Matters Before the 2 Post Car Lift Ships
Every 2 post car lift we sell ships on one or more pallets, and the columns alone can weigh well over a thousand pounds each depending on capacity. An 11,000 lb two-post like the ones we’ve quoted for shops right along the Missouri border typically breaks down into two column crates, an overhead beam or cable set, arm packages, and a power unit box. The trucking company will not carry these pieces up a driveway or into a shop bay — that’s a curbside or dock delivery, full stop.
We ask every customer the same question before we book a truck: do you have a forklift on site? We’ve had shops answer with everything from a rented forklift to a skid steer with pallet forks, and both work fine as long as the equipment can lift several hundred pounds safely and get it through the shop door. If you’ve genuinely got nothing — no forklift, no skid steer, no tractor with forks — tell us up front. We can arrange a liftgate truck or coordinate additional labor, but that has to be planned before the freight leaves the terminal, not discovered when the driver is sitting in your parking lot with a shipment nobody can unload.
What a Third-Generation Shop Told Us About Their Bay
One family-owned garage we worked with near the border had been doing safety and emissions inspections in the same building for three generations. The grandson running the shop now knew every inch of the floor but had never coordinated a freight delivery for something this heavy. His concrete had lifts in it before, decades earlier, so we didn’t need a fresh pour, but we still walked him through checking the slab for cracking near the old anchor points before we scheduled install day.
That conversation is typical. Long-running shops usually have the mechanical knowledge but not the freight experience, because the last time anyone bought a 2 post car lift for that bay was a generation ago. We treat every quote the same way — asking about ceiling height, door clearance, and whether a forklift or skid steer is available on site — so nothing gets discovered the morning the truck backs up to the shop.
Ceiling Height, Column Spacing, and Real Dimensions
Dimensions matter more than most people expect. We’ve quoted two-post lifts for garages with ceilings anywhere from about 12 feet up past 18 feet, and the column height on the lift itself needs enough clearance above the overhead beam for the vehicle and the lift mechanism to travel through full range. A typical asymmetric two-post arm setup also needs enough width between columns — often in the 10 to 12 foot range depending on the model — to swing the front arms clear of doors on longer trucks and vans, which matters a lot for inspection bays that see everything from sedans to full-size pickups.
We always confirm the exact overall width, height, and column footprint against the shop’s actual measurements before freight ships, not after. A 2 post car lift that’s an inch too tall for the ceiling or too wide for the bay is a problem nobody wants to discover after the freight bill is paid and the pallets are already sitting in the shop.
Concrete Readiness Before the Truck Arrives
Floor specs come up on nearly every quote we send. The general rule we work from calls for anchor bolts to sit at least 6 inches from any crack, expansion joint, or slab edge, and the concrete itself needs enough thickness and cure time to hold anchor bolts under load. We’ve told customers with floor drains running through the middle of their bay that a few feet of clearance from the drain is usually workable, but it has to be checked against the actual lift footprint, not assumed.
Shops with older concrete — especially inspection bays that have held a lift before — need that slab checked for hairline cracking or spalling near old anchor holes before we set the new columns. Skipping that step is how a shop ends up with a 2 post car lift that’s structurally fine but anchored into concrete that can’t hold it long-term.
Unloading Without a Loading Dock
Most of the family-owned shops we work with along the border don’t have a loading dock — they’ve got a gravel lot or a driveway and a garage door. That’s completely normal, and it’s exactly why we ask the forklift question early. A skid steer with forks, a tractor with a pallet attachment, or a rented forklift for the day all get the job done. What doesn’t work is four guys trying to hand-walk a column crate off a flatbed; these things are heavy enough that it’s a safety issue, not just an inconvenience.
If a shop has genuinely no equipment on site, we build that into the freight quote so a liftgate or additional delivery labor is arranged ahead of time. It costs less to plan for than to solve on the fly with the driver waiting.
Power Unit Placement and Column Setup
Once the pallets are off the truck and into the bay, setup still has a few details people don’t expect. The power unit generally has to mount on one of the two columns so the hydraulic hoses and cables can reach the cylinder and the opposite column without excess slack or strain. There’s also no rubber padding on the base of most lift columns, so shops with coated or epoxy floors should plan on protecting that finish during placement rather than assuming the lift base won’t mark it.
Control placement is another common question — many two-post lifts default to a front driver’s side or rear passenger side post, but that’s typically a preference based on shop layout, not a hard requirement, so we talk through it with each customer before anchoring.
Scheduling Install Day Around Freight Timing
The last piece is timing. Freight for a 2 post car lift can take anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks depending on the carrier and how far the shop sits from the distribution point, and border-area shops sometimes get quoted longer transit windows than customers closer to a major hub. We build install scheduling around confirmed freight arrival, not guesses, because showing up with a crew before the columns have cleared the dock wastes everyone’s time.
