Why RV and Trailer Shops Ask for a 2 Post Car Lift First

Most RV and trailer outfits already run a low ceiling clearance lift or a heavy-duty four post for the big units, but the daily bread-and-butter work — tow vehicle inspections, brake jobs on the customer’s truck while the fifth-wheel sits outside, hitch and suspension work — is exactly what a 2 post car lift is built for. It’s faster to load, faster to unload, and it frees up floor space that a drive-on four post would eat up permanently.

We’ve quoted this setup for shops running anywhere from a 9,000 lb capacity up through 12,000 lb, depending on whether they’re also lifting one-ton service trucks. One question we ask every time: how many vehicles a week are actually going across it? A shop doing service work ten times a week needs a different duty cycle than a hobbyist garage. If your ceiling height is on the shorter side, we’ve also handled low ceiling two post configurations for shops working inside older pole buildings where 12-foot side walls were the limiting factor.

Sequencing the Garage Build-Out Before the Slab Cures

The biggest mistake we see in a first-year build-out is pouring concrete without knowing exactly where the lift anchors need to land. Anchor bolts for a 2 post car lift want concrete thicker than the standard 4 inches — we generally want to see 6 inches or more, especially if there’s in-floor heat or a nearby expansion joint that could interfere with the mounting pattern. One customer’s install location had an expansion joint running almost directly under a post base, and we had to walk through exactly how far off it needed to sit before anchoring.

If you’re planning your build-out and haven’t poured yet, this is the single best time to call us. We can review your layout, tell you where the lift needs clearance from walls, overhead doors, and other equipment, and make sure your electrical rough-in accounts for the power unit. Retrofitting all of that after the pour is possible, but it’s more expensive and slower than doing it right the first time.

Seasonal Storage Changes What the Lift Needs to Do

Central Iowa RV and trailer shops have a hard seasonal swing. Spring and summer, bays are full of active service work. Fall and winter, a lot of that same floor space turns into storage for units that customers don’t want sitting outside all winter. A 2 post car lift plays double duty here — during the season it’s doing brake and suspension work, and during storage months it can hold a tow vehicle up and out of the way while a trailer or RV sits underneath on the shop floor.

This is where ceiling height and post height matter more than people expect. If you’re stacking storage underneath a lifted vehicle, you need to know your actual clearance, not just your door height. We’ve walked shops through this exact math — a 12-foot side wall building isn’t automatically tall enough once you add the lift’s own height and the vehicle sitting on it. Get the numbers before you commit to a layout, not after you’ve already told customers you can store their unit for the winter.

Freight, Forklifts, and What Install Day Actually Looks Like

Every quote we send starts with the same logistics questions: is there a forklift on site, is there a loading dock or a pit, and how much lead time do you need before the truck shows up. A 2 post car lift ships heavy — posts, carriages, and a hydraulic power unit — and if there’s no forklift on site, that changes how we schedule the unload and install. Shops that have a lift or forklift already on the property save time and, often, money on the install quote.

We’ve installed for shops that had everything ready to go — concrete cured, power run, forklift on hand — and we’ve installed for shops that needed us to bring extra equipment because nothing was staged yet. Both are doable. But if you’re sequencing a build-out, get us on the phone before the truck ships so we can tell you what to have ready. It saves a wasted trip and it keeps your first-year timeline from sliding.

The First Service Call: What Actually Breaks First

In year one, the calls we get on a 2 post car lift are rarely dramatic. It’s usually a cable that’s stretched and needs adjusting, or a chain that’s gone slightly off on one side, creating that uneven feel where one arm sits a couple inches lower than the other. We also see slow leaks in the hydraulic valve on used or older units — the lift raises fine but creeps down once it hits the lock point, which is a valve issue, not a structural one.

These are normal wear items, not signs you bought the wrong lift. What matters is catching them early with a basic maintenance check rather than waiting until the lift is noticeably off. If your shop is running the lift ten-plus times a week for service work, we’d recommend a service visit within the first year just to true up cables and check the hydraulic system before it becomes a bigger repair.

Choosing Capacity for a Mixed Fleet

RV and trailer shops rarely lift just one type of vehicle. You might have a customer’s half-ton pickup one day and a heavier one-ton dually towing gear the next. We generally steer these shops toward a 10,000 lb to 12,000 lb capacity 2 post car lift rather than a base 9,000 lb model, simply because the margin matters when you’re not 100% sure what’s rolling in on a given day. It costs more up front, but it’s cheaper than turning away work or overloading a lift rated too light for your actual fleet.

We also ask about used equipment a lot in this space — shops picking up a lift secondhand from a neighbor or another shop that’s closing down. That’s fine, but capacity and model identification matter before you rely on it for daily use. If the capacity sticker is faded or gone, we can usually identify the model from photos and confirm what it’s actually rated for before you put a customer’s vehicle on it.

Getting Your Layout Right the First Time

The shops that are happiest a year in are the ones that treated the 2 post car lift as the anchor point of their build-out, not an afterthought. That means deciding bay flow, storage zones, and overhead door placement around where the lift sits and how much clearance it needs on all sides — not shoehorning it in after everything else is finalized.
