Start With a Budget Range, Not a Model Number

Every build-out conversation we have starts the same way: what’s the number, and what’s it need to cover. A basic 2 post car lift for occasional differential fluid service and general suspension work sits in one budget tier. Step up to a heavier-duty unit that’s going up and down twenty times a day, and you’re in a different tier entirely — more like what a production shop needs, not a restoration hobby bay. We ask shop owners to separate the lift line item from the concrete, electrical, and drain work up front, because those numbers get lumped together and then the whole project looks scarier than it is.

For a restoration shop doing one or two cars at a time, with plenty of diff service, brake jobs, and exhaust work mixed in, a mid-range asymmetric two post unit usually covers it without overspending on capacity you won’t use. If the shop plans to eventually take on heavier trucks or muscle car frame work, we’ll talk about sizing up a notch now rather than replacing the lift in three years. Either way, pin the budget down before you pick a model, because the model choice cascades into ceiling height, floor anchoring, and bay width decisions that are expensive to undo.

Concrete and Ceiling Height Come Before Anything Else

We’ve seen more than one build-out stall because someone ordered a lift before checking slab thickness or overhead clearance. A 2 post car lift needs anchored concrete of a certain depth and cure time — thin or cracked slabs, or floors with unknown rebar, need evaluation before we’ll bolt anything down. If the shop is in an older Dubuque-area building with a slab poured decades ago, we send someone out to check it rather than guessing from a phone call.

Ceiling height matters just as much, especially for restoration work where you’re often lifting a car with a hood or trunk lid removed, or need clearance for a full frame swap. Two post lifts come in different column heights, and there are extension options — two, four, even six-foot extensions — if your ceiling allows it and your work calls for the extra reach. We always ask about ceiling height and any obstructions like ductwork or sprinkler lines before quoting, because that height decision locks in once the columns are anchored.

Sequencing Power, Air, and Drains Around the Lift Footprint

Once we know where the columns are going, everything else in that bay gets placed relative to it. Electrical for the lift’s power unit, compressed air drops for tools, and floor drains for fluid service all need to route around the lift’s footprint, not the other way around. This is where a lot of build-outs go sideways — someone runs conduit or plumbing first, then discovers the lift arms swing through that space when the car is up.

For differential fluid service specifically, drain placement matters a lot. You want a drain or a catch system positioned so a technician isn’t dragging a pan across the shop floor every time a diff needs draining. We recommend shops plan their floor drain or containment layout after the lift position is finalized, factoring in where the vehicle’s rear axle will sit when it’s at working height. Air line kits for impact tools and grease guns should run along the same path, mounted high enough to stay clear of the lift’s crossbar travel.

Choosing Symmetric vs Asymmetric for Restoration Work

Restoration shops handle a wide range of vehicles — sometimes a full-frame classic, sometimes a modern daily driver in for diff service between restoration jobs. That variety pushes most of our Dubuque-area customers toward an asymmetric two post lift, where the arms are offset to let doors swing open fully and put more of the vehicle’s weight over the rear columns for stability. Symmetric lifts still have their place, particularly for shops that work almost exclusively on older domestic muscle cars with different weight distribution, but asymmetric is the more flexible default for mixed restoration work.

We also talk through arm length and reach with shop owners doing diff service, because you need enough clearance to get under the rear axle without the arms interfering with exhaust or suspension components you’re trying to access. A lift with adjustable arm configurations and a good range of pad heights makes that job easier, especially on lowered or modified vehicles that show up in a restoration bay more often than you’d expect.

Turf, Coating, and Floor Finish Timing

A lot of shop owners want a finished-looking bay — turf flooring, epoxy coating, that kind of thing — and the timing question always comes up: floor finish before or after the lift goes in? We generally recommend anchoring the lift first, then finishing the floor around the base plates, because retrofitting a turf or coating system around an already-finished floor edge rarely looks clean and can interfere with anchor bolt access if service is ever needed.

If a shop wants a turf conversion kit or similar finish specifically integrated with the lift base, we coordinate that as part of the install rather than as an afterthought. It’s a small sequencing detail, but it’s exactly the kind of thing that turns a rushed build-out into a redo. We’d rather spend an extra phone call confirming the order of operations than have a shop owner staring at a beautiful new floor with an ugly gap around the lift columns.

Installation Logistics: Forklifts, Access, and Lead Time

Before we ever schedule an install date, we ask the same logistics questions every time: is there a forklift or skid loader on site, what’s the dock or door access like, and how much lead time do you need for delivery. A 2 post car lift arrives disassembled on a pallet in most cases, and getting it off the truck and into position without the right equipment on hand can turn a half-day install into a multi-day headache. If a shop doesn’t have material handling equipment, we plan around that rather than showing up and hoping for the best.

Delivery and installation together typically run as a bundled line item, and we quote that separately from the lift itself so shop owners can see exactly what labor and freight add to the project. For a Dubuque-area build-out, we also factor in travel time and coordinate install day around when the concrete has fully cured, since anchoring into fresh concrete before it’s ready is a mistake we won’t make twice.

Decision Tree: From Budget to Final Configuration

By the time we get to a final quote, the decision tree looks roughly like this: confirm budget tier, confirm slab and ceiling readiness, choose symmetric or asymmetric based on the mix of vehicles, size arm length and capacity for the heaviest job you expect to run — including diff service on trucks — then layer in extras like turf kits, air lines, and drain placement. Each answer narrows the next choice, which is why we push back gently when a shop owner wants to start with a model number before answering the earlier questions.

A 2 post car lift is a long-term fixture in a restoration bay, not a piece of equipment you swap out casually. Walking through this sequence up front — even if it takes an extra phone call or two — saves a shop from expensive rework later, whether that’s cutting new concrete, rerouting an air line, or discovering the ceiling height won’t clear a lifted truck’s frame. We’d rather spend that time on the front end than fix it after the fact.
