Why a mobile mechanic wanted a fixed 2 post car lift
He was billing well on brake and shock jobs but losing hours to weather, cold-soaked pavement, and being unable to safely rotate a car for one-side strut work. His plan was to keep the mobile business running for tire rotations and roadside stuff, but to funnel any suspension and shock replacement, alignment prep, and axle work back to the shed on his farm. That kind of work punishes jack stands and rewards a lift that lets you swing a torque wrench with two feet on the floor.

Walking the shed before the concrete pour

Overhead versus baseplate for a shed conversion
Overhead 2 post lifts are cleaner for suspension work because nothing crosses the floor between the columns. Baseplate lifts route the equalizer hose and cables across the ground, which is fine for a floor-drain-free residential slab but a nuisance when you are rolling a transmission jack. We steered him overhead because his ceiling allowed it and because he wanted the shutoff bar as a hard stop.
Had his ceiling been under 11 feet, we would have flipped him to baseplate and lived with the floor crossover. This is the choice every 2 post car lift buyer has to make, and it comes down to two questions: how tall is your ceiling at its lowest truss, and how often will you roll heavy carts between the columns. In his case the answers pointed overhead. He has not regretted it once.
Power, air, and the boring stuff that kills timelines
He had a 100-amp panel in the shed with a single 20-amp circuit for lights. A 2 post car lift usually needs a dedicated 30-amp, 220V single-phase circuit inside about ten feet of the power side column. We coordinated with a local electrician on a Tuesday, poured concrete the following Monday, and had the lift standing by that Friday.
