It isn’t, and the myths around that assumption are exactly why so many restoration and metal-work bays end up with a lift that fights the shop instead of working with it. Myth 1: You Can Order the Lift After the Slab Is Poured

This is the single most expensive myth we hear, and it comes up in nearly every European-marque shop build we quote. Guys assume a 2 post car lift is a piece of equipment you drop in wherever there’s floor space once the building is finished. In reality, the anchor bolt pattern, minimum concrete thickness, and column spacing all need to be locked in before the pour, not after. We’ve had customers with brand new heated 6-inch concrete tell us afterward they wish they’d called first, because the column footprint ended up landing right on a control joint they didn’t know to avoid.

For restoration work specifically, this matters even more because you’re often running heavier fixtures, jack stands, and welding carts around the columns. If you’re not sure exactly where posts will sit relative to a control joint, call us before the concrete truck shows up. We’ll send floor layout dimensions — front wall clearance, side wall clearance, spacing between posts, and where the 220v conduit needs to stub up — so the pour crew gets it right the first time instead of guessing.

Myth 2: Standard Height Is Always the Right Call

A lot of shops default to standard height because that’s what shows up first in a catalog. For general repair that’s often fine. For a European restoration and metal-work bay, it usually isn’t. Panel work, rocker replacement, and underbody welding all go faster with more usable clearance, and if your shop layout calls for driving a second vehicle underneath a raised car — which several of our customers have specifically asked about — you need to check the actual ramp height at full rise, not just assume it clears.

We had a customer recently comparing lift specs who found that at full extension the underside of the arms sat around 51 inches off the floor — not tall enough to roll another vehicle beneath it. That’s a real limitation worth knowing before you commit to a bay layout that depends on double-stacking cars. If tall clearance matters to your workflow, tell us that up front and we’ll steer you toward the right configuration rather than the default.

Myth 3: Any 110v Outlet Will Run the Lift

Electrical is where a lot of otherwise well-planned build-outs go sideways. Most 2-post units in the 10,000 to 15,000 lb range that European specialty shops gravitate toward need dedicated 220v power, not a standard household 110v circuit. We’ve had customers ask directly whether 110v would be sufficient, and the honest answer is almost always no — you need the 220v line run and stubbed up at the correct post location before the walls close in.

This ties directly back to build-out sequencing. If you’re planning LED lighting overhead and want it slim and unobtrusive, that’s a ceiling height and fixture placement conversation that also needs to happen before the electrician finishes rough-in. We’d rather tell you exactly where that 220v drop needs to land relative to the power unit column than have you find out after the inspection is scheduled that it’s twelve feet from where it needs to be.

Myth 4: Every Lift Comes With the Same Arm Reach and Ramps

Restoration and metal work often means longer wheelbase European sedans, wagons, and the occasional coupe with unusual pinch weld locations. Arm reach and pad configuration matter more here than on a typical domestic pickup bay. Some customers ask about detachable aluminum ramps versus the ramps that stay fixed to the runway — and yes, those are different lengths in most cases, so don’t assume the drive-on ramps you saw in a photo are interchangeable with add-on ramps sold separately.

Before you finalize a lift order, walk through your actual vehicle mix with us. If you’re doing unibody work on lower European cars, symmetric arm lifts with the right reach and adapter set save real time over a shop’s working life compared to a generic asymmetric configuration that wasn’t matched to your fleet.

Myth 5: The Power Unit Can Go Anywhere

We still get asked whether the hydraulic power unit can be mounted wherever there’s open wall space. It can’t — it has to mount to one of the two posts so the factory hose and cable runs actually reach without splicing or extending them. That single detail affects where you locate your electrical drop, where your air line for tire changes runs, and even which side of the bay makes sense for a rolling toolbox or parts cart.

Sequencing this correctly before the walls are finished saves you from patching drywall later. It’s a small detail on paper but it’s one of the most common things customers realize too late in a build-out.

Myth 6: One Quote Covers Everything You’ll Need

Shops focused on restoration work often bundle in more than just the lift — air compressors that mount to the column, rolling jacks for chassis work, alignment-capable racks if they’re doing suspension work on European platforms. We’ve quoted combination packages before where a customer wanted rolling jacks included, then decided to hold off on those and just get the lift installed first. That’s completely fine, but it changes the electrical and floor space planning, so tell us upfront which pieces you want now versus later.

Sequencing the build so the lift, the compressor, and any alignment equipment are planned together — even if purchased in phases — keeps you from re-running conduit or moving anchor points down the road.

Myth 7: Lead Time Doesn’t Matter for Restoration Timelines

Because restoration work is rarely urgent day-to-day, shops sometimes assume they can order a lift whenever and have it show up immediately. Lead times on 2 post car lift equipment vary by manufacturer and season, and freight delivery needs coordination too — whether you have a forklift on site to unload, whether there’s dock access, and how far out installation crews are booked. We’ve had orders where a customer wasn’t in a hurry at all, which is the easiest kind of job to schedule well, because we can slot delivery and install around your concrete cure time and electrical rough-in instead of rushing everything at once.

Building in that lead time from the start of your garage build-out — rather than treating the lift as a same-week add-on — is what actually keeps a European specialty shop’s opening date on track.
