Start With the 2 Post Car Lift Spec, Not the Floor Plan
The single biggest mistake we see is a shop owner designing the bay layout, pouring the slab, and then shopping for a 2 post car lift afterward. It works backward. Every lift has a footprint, an arm sweep radius, and a column-to-column spread that has to be measured against your actual bay width and any support posts or overhead doors nearby. We’ve had foremen call us after the fact asking why a 10,000 or 12,000 lb lift they liked online won’t clear a support beam they didn’t account for.
Before you finalize anything, get the exact model in front of us — whether it’s a Rotary or a Challenger two-post — and let us cross-check it against your bay dimensions and ceiling height. Ceiling height alone rules out more lifts than people think; a shop with 10.5 feet of workable clearance is going to be limited to a shorter lift regardless of lifting capacity needs. Get the spec locked before the floor plan, and everything downstream — concrete, power, drainage — falls into place instead of fighting you.
Concrete Comes Before You Talk to Us About Install Dates
A 2 post car lift asks a lot of your slab. We typically want to see at least 4 to 5 inches of concrete with no expansion joints running through the anchor pattern, and ideally no in-floor heat lines cutting through the footprint. Rebar isn’t always required depending on the lift and slab thickness, but we ask about it every time because it changes the anchoring plan. If you’re pouring new concrete specifically for this build-out, cure time matters — we’re not going to anchor a lift into a slab that hasn’t had enough time to set up properly, so build that into your timeline before you set an install date.
We’ve had customers request installs within a couple weeks of first contact, and we can usually make that work if the slab is ready and the lift is in stock. But if concrete still needs to be poured, that timeline needs to start weeks earlier, not days. Sequence it: confirm the lift model and pad location first, pour and cure the concrete second, schedule the install third. Doing it out of order is how shops end up with a lift sitting in a corner for a month waiting on a slab that isn’t ready yet.
Power, Lighting, and Air Lines Before the Lift Shows Up
Every 2 post car lift needs electric run to the power unit, and that power unit has to sit on one of the two columns so the hoses and cables can reach — it’s not something you can relocate to a wall outlet across the bay. If you’re framing out a new bay or converting an old one, get your electrician on site before install day so the circuit is already run and terminated where the lift’s power side will land. The same goes for any air lines you want for pneumatic tools once the vehicle is up in the air.
Lighting is the other piece people forget until they’re doing tire rotation and wheel work at 6pm in a dim bay. Overhead lift-mounted lighting or extra shop lighting positioned around the columns makes a real difference for wheel-off inspection work, brake work, and anything requiring you to see clearly underneath a raised vehicle. Plan the electrical for lighting and power unit together in one pass instead of running conduit twice.
Leave Working Clearance Around the Columns
A common build-out mistake is boxing the lift in too tight against a wall, a tool cabinet, or a neighboring bay. You need clearance not just for the vehicle’s doors to open fully once it’s up, but for a tech to walk all the way around the lift comfortably during tire rotation and wheel work, pulling wheels off both sides without squeezing past a workbench. We generally recommend a few extra feet of clear space beyond the arm sweep radius on all sides, more if you’re running a shop where multiple techs work the same bay during a shift.
This also matters for arm reach on longer vehicles. If your shop services trucks or vans in addition to daily drivers, the extra clearance gives you room to angle the vehicle slightly if the wheelbase runs long. Don’t just measure the lift footprint on paper — walk the bay with the arms extended in your head and picture a tech doing wheel work on both sides at once.
Decide Early Whether You’re Doing New Construction or a Retrofit
New construction gives you the most flexibility because you can pour the slab to the exact spec the lift needs and route power exactly where it belongs. A retrofit into an existing shop is a different animal — you’re working around whatever concrete thickness, drainage, and electrical already exists. We’ve installed two-post lifts in shops with 14 to 16 foot ceilings and plenty of room, and we’ve also had to talk customers through why their existing slab needed reinforcement before a heavier lift could go in.
If you’re retrofitting, get a straight answer on your existing concrete thickness before you commit to a lift capacity. A 9,000 to 12,000 lb 2 post car lift is a common range for shops doing general mechanical and tire work, but the slab underneath has to support it regardless of what the lift itself is rated for. We’d rather tell you that upfront than show up on install day and find a slab that can’t take the anchors.
Delivery Access and Forklift Logistics
A 2 post car lift arrives in pieces — columns, arms, power unit, cables — and it’s heavy. Before install day, we always ask whether there’s a forklift on site or dock access, because getting a few hundred pounds of steel column off a truck without one turns a simple delivery into a slow, frustrating process. If your building doesn’t have forklift access, tell us early so we can plan for it rather than discovering it curbside.
Same goes for door width and overhead door clearance. Some shops have wide bay doors that make this a non-issue; others have a single narrow entry that limits how the columns can be maneuvered inside. Walk your own delivery path before install day — from the loading area to the final bay location — and note any tight turns, low headers, or stairs. It sounds basic, but it’s one of the most common last-minute holdups we run into on installs.
Get Your Timeline and Lead Time Straight
Lead times on a new 2 post car lift vary by brand and whether it’s in stock. Some models ship same-day from inventory, others run a week or two out depending on manufacturer backlog. If you’re sequencing a build-out around a hard deadline — opening day, a lease start, a customer commitment — build in buffer on both the lift lead time and the concrete cure time, because those two clocks rarely run in parallel cleanly.
