An RV and trailer service shop up in the Iowa Great Lakes region ordered its first 2 post car lift from us last winter. The owner runs a small crew, does a lot of differential fluid service on Class C chassis and light tow-vehicles, and had been rolling under trucks on a creeper for 15 years. We ran a site survey in January, installed in early spring, and checked back at six months and again at a year. Here is the honest story of that first year with a new 2 post car lift, from the first walk-through to the first differential job.

Why an RV service shop wanted a 2 post car lift
Most RV shops we work with lean toward four-post lifts because Class A coaches are long and heavy. This shop is different: they service the tow-vehicles and Class C chassis that customers drop off along with the coach. Differential fluid, transfer-case fluid, u-joints, and brake work on a 3/4-ton pickup are much faster on a 2 post car lift than on a four-post. The owner did the math and figured a 10,000 lb clear-floor 2 post car lift would pay for itself in labor hours inside 12 months on diff service alone. He was right; by month nine he had cleared the price of the lift plus the install in billable hours he would not have had before. The lift went in the back bay he had reserved for tow-vehicle service, and the front two bays stayed drive-on for the coaches themselves.
The site survey up in the Great Lakes region
We drove up on a Thursday. The shop has a 40-year-old poured slab that the owner had already cored for us: five inches of 3,500 psi concrete with #4 rebar on 16-inch centers, no expansion joints in the bay we needed. Ceiling was 13 feet clear, more than enough for any 2 post car lift we sell. Column spacing worked, the sub-panel had room for a 30 amp circuit, and the only complication was that the shop’s air line ran across the ceiling exactly where the overhead cross-tube would sit. We re-routed the air line down the far wall on install day. The owner also had a floor drain 18 inches from one of the planned anchor spots, so we shifted the whole footprint 14 inches forward, which cost him a little arm-swing on the driver’s side but nothing that mattered for RV chassis work.
Prepping the slab and the utilities
Between the survey and install day the shop did three things: he had the slab pressure-washed and let it dry for a week, he had an electrician pull a dedicated 220 volt 30 amp circuit to a plug within six feet of the power-unit column, and he moved a heavy tool cabinet that had been sitting in one of the anchor spots for a decade. That prep saved us two hours on install day. We always send a written prep checklist after a site survey because forgetting the electrical is the number one delay. Second is a tool box that has to be emptied before it can be moved. Third is any floor coating; some epoxy coatings need to be ground off in the anchor footprint so the anchor plate can sit on bare concrete. If a shop wants a 2 post car lift on epoxy, we grind clean spots the size of the plate before we drill.
Install day: what actually happened
Install went smoothly. Two of us on-site by 8 a.m., columns off the trailer and standing by 10, anchors drilled and torqued by 1 p.m., equalizer cable strung and hydraulic lines run by 3, and first cycle test with an empty carriage by 5. Day two we filled the reservoir, purged air from both cylinders, ran the load test with a known 6,500 lb pickup, held it 15 minutes, and cycled five times. The safety-cam clicks were clean, arm restraints engaged on every arm, and both carriages stopped at the exact same height on the equalizer bar. The shop passed his crew through a 45 minute owner orientation. Every 2 post car lift we install comes with that orientation, because the number one warranty issue we see across all brands is not a defect; it is somebody driving in with an arm still swung out or forgetting to drop the arm restraints before lifting.
The first differential fluid service on the new lift
The next Monday the shop had a Ford F-250 4×4 on the schedule for front and rear diff fluid, transfer case, and a rear brake job. The tech pulled the truck into the bay, set the arms under the frame at the factory lift points, raised to about waist height, locked the safety cams, and got underneath standing up. Both diff drains, both fill plugs, transfer case drain and fill, and the brake job took him a little over two hours; on the creeper the same job would have taken him closer to four. He told us later the biggest win was not the time; it was that at the end of the day his back did not hurt. That shop’s book has been full ever since, mostly because customers who drop off a coach for chassis service now also drop off the tow-vehicle.
Six months in: what we adjusted
We came back at six months for the follow-up torque check and inspection. Both cross-tube anchors had settled about 10 foot-pounds and needed a snug back up. One rubber arm pad had chunked out on a rough F-350 frame rail; we sold him a set of three replacement pads and a set of truck-adapter extensions from the store. We noticed a small hydraulic weep at one of the cylinder rod seals, cleaned it and watched it for a month; it never grew and by the annual visit it had dried up entirely. That is normal on a new hydraulic circuit as everything seats. The only real change the shop made was adding a magnetic drip tray under the lift because diff fluid drains splash a little on a new floor. That tray is $40 at any farm store.
What we tell every RV shop before they buy
If you service tow-vehicles alongside RVs, a 2 post car lift is one of the highest-leverage tools you can buy. Do a real site survey before you order, not after. Pull the dedicated electrical before install day. Order truck-adapter pad extensions with the lift if you work on 3/4 or 1 ton pickups, because factory arms alone will scuff frame rails. Buy from someone who installs their own lifts; if you buy freight-only from an online-only shop you own the anchor holes, the plumb, and the warranty conversation with a manufacturer you have never met.
