A Waukee tire-and-alignment shop expanded into full exhaust and driveline service last year and asked us to help them add a second 2 post car lift dedicated to that work. Exhaust and driveline live under the vehicle, so a 2-post is the right tool over a 4-post any day. The owner was picky about safety because he had one bad experience with a badly installed lift at his previous shop. We ran the same safety walkthrough we run on every tire-shop install, but with the exhaust and driveline workflow in mind. Here is the whole sequence, in the order we do it.

What a Waukee tire shop needs from a 2 post car lift

A tire bay that also does exhaust and driveline is under the vehicle more than most bays, and often with hot metal in hand. The 2 post car lift that fits that workflow needs three things beyond capacity: clear under-vehicle space with no floor bars, arms and pads that swing well out of the way when a full section of exhaust pipe has to come down, and enough lift height for a tech to stand fully upright with elbows and a plasma cutter in play. That means overhead configuration, three-stage arms with drop-end pads that lower out from under the frame rails, and a full-rise column of at least 12 feet 2 inches. Not every 2 post car lift meets all three. The ones that do are the ones we recommend to tire shops moving into driveline work.

Exhaust and driveline access on a 2 post

An overhead-style 2 post car lift keeps the floor between the columns completely open, and that matters more for exhaust than any other job. A hanging exhaust system will drop straight down when the hangers release, and any obstruction on the floor turns into a trip hazard while the tech is holding a hot section. On a baseplate model the equalizer bar sits across the floor between the columns, and while it is only a few inches tall, it is right where a rolling exhaust cart wants to be. Driveline work is similar; when a drive shaft comes out, the tech needs floor room to slide the shaft out from under. Overhead wins for both. We spec overhead on every tire-plus-driveline shop we quote.

Slab thickness for a busy tire-and-alignment shop

A busy tire shop cycles a 2 post car lift more times a day than almost any other shop configuration. Every rotation is one lift cycle, and a well-run tire bay does 15 to 25 rotations a day. That is 5,500 to 9,000 lift cycles a year per bay. Slab loads compound over that number, so slab quality matters even more than the peak-load spec suggests. For a 10K to 12K overhead 2 post car lift on a busy tire shop floor, we want five inches minimum of 3,500 psi concrete with real reinforcement. Four inches with mesh will hold spec, but we come back for a torque check at three months instead of six on those slabs. If the slab is unknown, we core before we anchor.

Rebar placement and edge distance

Anchor bolts on a 2 post car lift want at least six inches to any concrete edge or joint. The most common mistake we see on tire-shop installs is anchoring too close to a control joint that got sawed into the slab when it was poured. Under load the concrete cracks along that joint and the anchor loses its wedge. We map every joint and edge in the bay with chalk before we drill. Rebar placement also matters because a wedge anchor that lands directly on a bar will not seat correctly. We use a rebar scanner on any pre-1990s slab to find the mesh grid and shift anchor locations by a few inches when necessary. On new slabs poured in the last decade the rebar is usually placed on-plan and we can trust the drawings.

Anchor torque and re-checking after six months

Anchor torque on a 3/4 inch wedge anchor is in the 150 foot-pound range for most 2-post lifts we sell. We use a calibrated click-type wrench and log every anchor. The critical work is not install day; it is the 30-day re-check and the six-month re-check. On a tire-shop cycle count, anchors settle noticeably in the first month and less in the following months. We build the 30-day re-check into every install we sell in the Waukee area. If a shop bought a 2 post car lift from a marketplace and never had an installer come out for that check, we can still do the visit as a paid service. It is one of the highest-value hours a tire shop can buy in the first year of ownership.

Overhead versus asymmetric for driveline work

The Waukee shop asked whether a symmetric or asymmetric overhead was better for their exhaust and driveline mix. Asymmetric rotates the columns and uses shorter front arms and longer rear arms, which lets a driver open a door without hitting the column. That helps a general service bay. For driveline work the priority is arm swing range and pad reach, and symmetric gives cleaner geometry for reaching frame rails on both ends of a wide range of vehicles. Versa-symmetric splits the difference by letting the columns rotate to match the vehicle. We usually recommend versa-symmetric for a shop mixing tire, exhaust, and driveline work on everything from a small sedan to a full-size pickup.

Our safety walkthrough before your first lift

The final piece of every install is the owner and crew orientation. We walk the whole shop through daily safety inspection: check arm restraints before every lift, confirm the safety-cam clicks on the way up, listen for hydraulic noise on the way down, and re-check that arms are set at real OEM pick-up points before raising a wheel off the ground. We hand each tech a laminated card that lists the pre-lift checks. Nothing on that card is exotic. The card exists because tire-shop cycle counts are so high that a rushed tech will skip the checks unless they are explicitly written down in front of them.
