An independent pro shop in Cedar Falls asked us to help them plan a new transmission bay from bare walls. They wanted a 2 post car lift built for transmission removal and reinstall, and they wanted the whole garage build-out sequenced correctly so the lift went in at the right point in the project. We walked their empty shell in February and delivered a full build-out plan plus a side-by-side comparison of two 2 post car lift configurations tuned for trans work. Here is that plan and comparison in the order we ran it.

Two configurations for transmission work

Configuration A was a 10,000 lb symmetric baseplate 2 post car lift with three-stage front arms, gear-driven arm restraints, and screw pads. Configuration B was a 12,000 lb versa-symmetric overhead with three-stage front and rear arms, gear-driven restraints, and truck-adapter pad extensions. Baseplate on a transmission bay is worth a serious look because there is no cross-tube overhead to interfere with a transmission jack. Overhead is the more common choice but forces the tech to work around the cross bar when hoisting a heavy front-wheel-drive transaxle out. Both configurations lift the same vehicles safely; the difference is workflow, and workflow on a trans shop compounds over hundreds of jobs a year.

Baseplate versus overhead for trans-jack clearance

A transmission jack is a tall piece of equipment. On a rear-drive truck the jack lifts a 200 to 400 pound trans up under the frame, and the jack itself stands close to five feet tall at full lift with the trans on top. An overhead 2 post car lift has a cross-tube at roughly 11 to 12 feet, which is plenty of room for that jack. On a front-drive car the transaxle sits higher and the removal path lifts the unit and swings it clear before dropping. Overhead cross-tube can occasionally interfere with that swing on the tallest transaxle setups. Baseplate keeps the space above the vehicle wide open. The trade is that baseplate puts a floor bar between the columns; on a trans bay where jacks and roll-around tools live under the vehicle, that floor bar is a nuisance.

Cedar Falls garage build-out order

A new garage build-out has a sequence and the 2 post car lift lives in the middle of it. Rough electrical goes first because you cannot install a lift without a dedicated circuit ready to plug in. Slab pour is next if the shop is new construction; concrete cures 28 days before any anchor work. Rough plumbing for a drain if the bay is going to have one. Then framing and drywall on the walls that are not going to see the lift columns. The 2-post lift goes in after slab cure and before any final floor coatings, air lines, or shelving because you need clear access with a forklift to unload columns and swing them into place. Final electrical trim, air, drain, and shelving come last.

Slab pour, cure, and anchor sequence

For a new-construction Cedar Falls trans shop we specced a 6-inch slab with #4 rebar on 12-inch centers, 3,500 psi mix, over a 6 mil vapor barrier on 4 inches of compacted gravel. That is heavier than we would design for a light-duty tire shop but appropriate for a bay that will see full-load lifts every hour and roll heavy jacks daily. Cure time is 28 days for full design strength. We schedule anchor drilling on day 28 or later, never sooner even if the surface feels hard on day 14. Wet-slab anchor holes fail. The shop poured on a Thursday in March and we came back on the following month’s schedule to install.

Utilities: air, power, and drain lines

The trans bay needs three utility runs before the lift goes in. Power is a dedicated 220 volt 20 to 30 amp circuit to a plug within six feet of the power-unit column. Air is a 3/8 or 1/2 inch feed line to a wall drop near the bay; the actual air impact tools live on a coiled hose off that drop. Drain is a small floor drain about 6 feet from the lift centerline for catching transmission fluid drops, cooler flushes, and general shop rinse water. We do not run any of these utilities through the anchor zone or within six inches of a planned anchor location, because drilling into a buried conduit or a live drain line is the kind of mistake nobody ever makes twice.

Symmetric versus asymmetric for trans work

The Cedar Falls owner asked whether asymmetric would help him with door swing while a trans is out of the vehicle. In practice, once a car is on the 2 post car lift, the doors get opened at ride height, not at full lift, and asymmetric versus symmetric matters most at that ride-height stage. For a trans shop, the more important geometry is arm reach at full extension. A wide range of vehicles need arm reach from about 32 inches to about 48 inches at the pad. Versa-symmetric geometry rotates the columns to fit the vehicle and covers both extremes. We usually recommend versa-symmetric for any shop with a mixed FWD and RWD vehicle mix on the schedule.

Which we picked and how it went

We recommended Config B, the 12,000 lb versa-symmetric overhead with truck-adapter extensions, for this Cedar Falls trans bay. The shop had enough ceiling for overhead and enough vehicle mix that versa-symmetric arms paid back the price difference. The baseplate option was tempting for trans-jack clearance, but the floor-bar nuisance won the argument against it. Install went in on schedule after the 28-day slab cure. First transmission job on the new 2 post car lift was a rear-drive pickup and the tech had the transmission on the jack, out, and set on the bench in under two hours. Twelve months in the shop had trimmed average transmission R&R time by roughly 25 percent versus their previous rented bay. Call 800-674-9302 if you want us to spec your build-out.
