We install and service lifts all over central Iowa, and we’ve walked into more than one Ames-area shop where the lift itself was fine but the bay layout around it was fighting the work every single day. A 2 post car lift is only as good as the room you give it — clearance for doors, room to swing a rolling jack, space for a welding cart or parts bench. Configuration A: Lift Centered, Work Bench Behind
The first layout we see a lot, especially in older buildings that were converted from a general repair shop into a restoration or bodywork shop, is the 2 post car lift centered in the bay with a workbench or parts table pushed against the back wall. On paper this looks tidy. In practice, once you’re doing metal work — cutting out rust, hanging fenders, running a body cart in and out — you end up walking around the columns constantly to get from the vehicle to your bench. We’ve measured out more than one Ames shop where the tech was covering an extra fifteen to twenty feet per trip simply because the bench sat on the wrong wall relative to the lift’s swing arms.
The other issue with this setup shows up with wider vehicles. A 2 post car lift with a max wheelbase in the 184-inch range, similar to what we’ve measured on jobs for shops around the state, needs real room on both sides once the arms are extended for an SUV or a longer restoration project like a truck or wagon. If the columns are centered without enough side clearance, techs start swinging doors into tool chests or clipping the arms on a rolling cart. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s an annoyance you feel every single day you’re in that bay.
Configuration B: Lift Offset, Flow Toward the Door
The second layout, and the one we usually recommend for restoration and metal work specifically, offsets the 2 post car lift toward one side of the bay with a clear path running straight from the lift to the bay door. This matters more than people expect because restoration work involves moving big awkward things in and out — quarter panels, a fender on a cart, a stack of trim being staged for paint. When the lift is centered, that traffic has to detour around it. When it’s offset with a straight shot to the door, you can roll a panel cart straight out without threading it past the columns.
This layout also plays nicer with asymmetric arm lifts, which most shops doing bodywork prefer anyway because the offset swing gives more usable door-opening space on the driver’s side. We’ve set this up in shops where the previous owner had the lift dead-center and just never loved it — once we repositioned during a remodel, the flow through the bay improved enough that they mentioned it unprompted months later.
Ceiling Height and Column Spacing
Before you lock in either layout, ceiling clearance has to be checked against your specific lift model. We’ve had customers tell us their ceiling is eleven feet only to find out the lift they want needs more overhead room once the vehicle is at full height with the arms locked. A 2 post car lift with a 10,000 lb capacity commonly needs somewhere in the ten to twelve foot range depending on the model, and if you’re running a lift with a raised overhead bar for cable routing, that number climbs. Get this measured before you commit to a bay position, because moving a lift after the anchors are set is a much bigger job than measuring twice up front.
Column spacing matters just as much. We’ve quoted jobs where a shop’s existing bay had a lift set 10 feet 10 inches wide, and swapping in a newer heavy-duty two-post model meant either matching that spacing closely or shifting the lift next to it by roughly a foot. In a restoration shop where bays are already tight with fabrication tables and parts racks, that extra foot has to come from somewhere, so we always walk the bay in person before finalizing a layout recommendation.
Where the Rolling Jack Lives
Metal and restoration work leans heavily on rolling jacks for supporting a body or subframe while the lift itself does the heavy lifting, and where that jack parks when it’s not in use is an underrated part of bay design. In the centered layout, jacks tend to get pushed against whichever wall is closest, which is usually the workbench wall, creating clutter right where you need clear space to work. In the offset layout, there’s normally a dead zone near the far column where a jack or two can sit without being in the way of the door path.
We’ve also seen shops run two rolling jacks per bay when doing frame or subframe work on a 2 post car lift, since one jack alone isn’t always stable enough for uneven weight distribution during a restoration teardown. If your workflow calls for that, plan the jack storage into the layout from day one rather than discovering the problem after the lift is bolted down.
Door Swing and Arm Clearance
One thing that trips up shop owners designing a bay around a new 2 post car lift is forgetting how far vehicle doors swing once the car is at working height. On a sedan this is a minor issue. On a full-size pickup or an SUV being restored, an open door at lift height can extend well past where it would at ground level, and if your column or bench is in that path, you’ll be closing doors carefully every time instead of working freely. We size this into every layout recommendation we make, especially for shops that work on a mix of vehicle sizes.
Arm clearance during the lifting cycle itself is the other half of this. Asymmetric lifts swing differently than symmetric ones, and if your bay was designed around one style, swapping lift types later can create clearance surprises you didn’t have before.
What We Recommend for Restoration Bays
After walking dozens of Ames-area shops, our default recommendation for a restoration or metal work bay is the offset layout with an asymmetric 2 post car lift, workbench positioned along the side wall rather than the back wall, and rolling jack storage tucked near the rear column. This keeps your primary traffic lane clear, gives you full door swing without obstruction, and lets a second technician work at the bench without crossing paths with whoever is under the vehicle. It’s not the only layout that works, but it’s the one that causes the fewest daily headaches once the shop is actually running production.
