Start With Ceiling Height, Not the Lift Catalog

Every build-out we help sequence starts with a tape measure at the ceiling, not a scroll through a catalog. We’ve had customers wire the deposit for a 2 post car lift only to have a spouse or partner point out afterward that the ceiling won’t clear it once a truck or SUV is raised to full height. That’s a real conversation we’ve had, and it’s an easy one to avoid if you measure first. Overhead lifts need enough clearance for the carriage, the vehicle, and a few inches of margin above that – garage door tracks, ductwork, and light fixtures all eat into that number fast.

If your ceiling is under roughly 11 feet, a two post may still work depending on the model’s overhead height, but it narrows your options. This is also the point where some folks pivot to asking whether four post lifts are shorter – they’re not automatically, since a four post’s height depends on the same carriage-and-runway geometry. Match the Lift to What You’re Actually Working On

Once ceiling height clears the two-post option, the next branch in the decision tree is what you’re lifting and how often. A daily-maintenance garage doing oil changes, brake jobs, and general upkeep on personal vehicles doesn’t need the same lift as a shop pulling drivetrains or servicing dually trucks. If concrete isn’t ready, we’d rather push the install date than set a lift on a floor that can’t hold it. Power and Bay Width Set the Final Layout

With ceiling and floor confirmed, the layout question becomes electrical service and bay width. Most two-post lifts run on a dedicated 220V circuit, and if your garage was wired for lighting and small tools only, that’s a conversation to have with an electrician before install week, not during it. We also look at column spacing versus your bay width and any support posts, since a two-post needs clearance on both sides for the arms to swing fully open without hitting a wall, tool chest, or neighboring column.

We’ve seen garages where the lift technically fits the footprint on paper but leaves no room to open a driver’s door once a vehicle is raised. That’s a layout mistake that only shows up after install if nobody walked the space with actual arm-swing dimensions in hand. Before locking in a configuration, we sketch the column placement against your real bay width, door swing, and any fixed obstructions – because moving a two-post’s anchor points after the fact costs a lot more than getting the layout right in the planning stage.

Budget Tiers: What Actually Changes the Price

Budget is the branch most people start with, but it should really be the last filter after ceiling, floor, power, and layout are settled. At the entry tier, a basic 2 post car lift with standard arms and a straightforward capacity covers most daily-maintenance garages. Step up a tier and you’re paying for higher capacity, asymmetric or open-front arm configurations, or a taller carriage for larger trucks and SUVs. The top tier usually reflects commercial-grade duty cycles – shops running lifts multiple times a day, every day, where the extra build quality earns its cost back over years of use.

For general daily maintenance work, the configuration debate usually comes down to standard two-post versus a drive-over plate style. The tradeoff is a slightly different footprint and anchor pattern, so it needs to be decided before the concrete work, not after.

If you’re doing more varied work with occasional long-wheelbase vehicles, a standard arm configuration usually offers more flexibility for lift-point placement.

Sequencing the Actual Install Week

Once every branch of the decision tree is settled – ceiling, use case, concrete, power, layout, budget, and configuration – the last step is sequencing install week itself. We confirm concrete cure time is met, the electrical circuit is live, and the bay is clear of tools and vehicles before our crew shows up with the two-post lift. Delivery logistics matter here too: sections need a clear path from the truck to the bay, and if there’s no forklift on site, we plan around that ahead of time rather than discovering it curbside.

After install, we walk through the daily maintenance checklist with you – checking anchor bolt torque periodically, greasing pivot points, inspecting hydraulic hoses and the power unit, and listening for anything unusual during raise and lower cycles.
