Why Sequencing Comes Before the 2 Post Car Lift Order

Most fleet managers we talk to want to jump straight to picking a model and a capacity. That’s backwards. Before we even quote a 2 post car lift, we need to know where it sits in the overall build-out timeline — concrete pour, ceiling height, electrical rough-in, and bay layout all need to be locked before the lift shows up on a truck. If the slab goes in without knowing anchor bolt patterns and required concrete thickness, you end up with a lift that can’t be rated to its full capacity, which is a real problem for a fleet running everything from patrol vehicles to plow trucks.

We’ve seen this play out with municipal shops before: someone pours an 8-inch slab with rebar thinking it’s plenty, then finds out the lift they actually need for their heaviest truck wants deeper anchoring at each column base. For alignment work specifically, sequencing also affects where the lift sits relative to the alignment rack’s turnplates and slip plates — you want line-of-sight and enough clearance around the columns for a tech to walk a full circle around the vehicle. Get your builder and your lift supplier talking to each other early, before drawings are final, not after.

Concrete and Anchoring for a City Shop Bay

Concrete readiness is the single most common holdup we run into with fleet accounts. A 2 post car lift rated for the 10,000 to 15,000 lb range — which covers most municipal fleet vehicles including one-ton trucks and plow rigs — needs a slab thickness and cure time that a lot of older city garages simply don’t have without remediation. We always ask: how old is the slab, is there rebar, is there in-floor heat, and has anything ever cracked near the proposed bay.

In-floor heat is a bigger deal than people expect. Anchor bolts can’t go through heat lines, so if your garage has it, the lift placement has to be planned around the heat loop layout, not the other way around. We’ve had fleet managers come to us after the slab was already poured, and at that point we’re working within whatever anchor zones are actually open, which sometimes means a less-than-ideal column spacing for the alignment bay. We typically steer municipal accounts toward a 2 post car lift in the 10,000 to 15,000 lb class specifically because it covers the heaviest vehicle in the fleet with margin, rather than sizing to the average vehicle and getting caught short when the plow truck rolls in for alignment work.

Symmetric versus asymmetric arm configuration matters here too. For alignment specifically, techs need to be able to swing doors open fully and walk around the vehicle without ducking under an arm or column, so we usually recommend asymmetric arm lifts for shops doing heavy alignment volume.
