He had a dedicated inspection bay running state safety inspections plus pre-delivery checks on used inventory, roughly thirty vehicles a week through one hole, and the aging unit in there was a non-certified import of unknown vintage with a cracked overhead shutoff bar and no legible capacity plate. His district office had started asking for certification documentation. This article is the technical version of the conversation we had — actual clearances, actual anchor specs, what ALI Gold certification means and does not mean, and how we landed on the configuration that fit his building.

What ALI Gold Certification Actually Certifies
There is a lot of loose talk in equipment sales about certification, so let’s be precise. The Automotive Lift Institute runs a third-party certification program administered by an independent lab. A certified model has been tested to ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards for structural integrity, overload behavior, stability, and the function of its safety devices, and the manufacturer’s production process is audited on an ongoing basis. Certified units carry a gold ALI label with a serial number you can look up. That label applies to a specific model and capacity — not to a brand as a whole. A manufacturer can have three certified models and two that are not.
What certification does not do is make a lift safe forever. It does not cover installation, it does not cover the concrete, and it does not cover a unit whose cables have gone slack or whose latches have been disabled with a zip tie. We see all three regularly. For a dealership, though, the label matters for concrete reasons beyond safety: insurance carriers ask about it, manufacturer facility audits ask about it, and in a liability claim after an incident, the difference between a certified and non-certified unit is the difference between a short conversation and a long one. When the service manager in Council Bluffs asked whether ALI Gold was worth paying for on a 2 post car lift, the honest answer was that in a franchise dealership environment it is not really optional anymore.
The Bay: Real Numbers From a Tape Measure
Here is what we measured, because generic spec sheets are useless without them. Bay width between structural columns: 15 feet 8 inches. Ceiling height to the underside of the lowest sprinkler main: 11 feet 9 inches. Ceiling to the deck above at the highest point: 13 feet 2 inches. Overhead door opening: 10 feet wide, 9 feet 6 inches tall. Existing anchor pattern from the old unit: columns 12 feet 2 inches apart center-to-center, drive-through clearance measured at 8 feet 10 inches inside the arms.
That 11 feet 9 inches to the sprinkler main is the number that decided everything. A typical clearfloor overhead two-post in the 12,000 lb class stands somewhere between 11 feet 8 inches and 12 feet 6 inches at the top of the overhead assembly, depending on model and whether the top beam is expandable. Some models offer a low-ceiling configuration that drops the beam by trimming maximum rise. We ran the numbers on three certified models and found that only one would fit under the main with legal clearance, and it did so by cutting maximum lift height to about 68 inches — which is workable for inspections but tight for a tech who is 6 foot 3. So we priced a baseplate configuration alongside it. Baseplate removes the overhead constraint entirely and gave him a full 74 inches of rise. Trading a floor channel for six extra inches of working height was, in his words, not a hard call.
Capacity Math for a Mixed Inventory Lane
Dealership inspection lanes see whatever rolls onto the lot. His mix was roughly 60 percent cars and crossovers, 30 percent half-ton pickups and full-size SUVs, and 10 percent three-quarter-ton and up. His heaviest regular vehicle was a three-quarter-ton crew cab diesel at about 8,600 lb curb, and every couple of months something heavier came through on trade.
The lazy answer is 10,000 lb, and on paper 10,000 covers 8,600. We do not like that answer for a lane running thirty vehicles a week for the next fifteen years. Capacity ratings assume the load is distributed properly across all four arms, and in an inspection lane where vehicles get set fast by whoever is available, distribution is not always ideal. A front-heavy diesel with the pads set slightly rearward can put a lot more than a quarter of 8,600 lb on one front arm. Going to 12,000 lb costs meaningfully less than the difference in stress margin suggests, and it eliminates the judgment call entirely. We specified 12,000 lb asymmetric-capable columns with adjustable arms so the same 2 post car lift could handle a low sports car with the doors clearing the columns and a long-wheelbase pickup with the arms swung forward. That flexibility is worth more in a mixed lane than any single spec on the sheet.
Concrete, Anchors, and Reusing an Existing Pattern
The temptation with a replacement is to bolt the new unit into the old holes. Sometimes that works. Usually it does not, because anchor patterns differ between manufacturers and because the old holes are now oversized and spalled. We cored three samples: 6 inches, 6.25 inches, and 5.75 inches of concrete over compacted fill, no visible reinforcement, estimated 3,500 PSI based on age and rebound testing. That is genuinely good for a building of that era and more than adequate.
The old anchor holes were the problem. Two of the eight had spalled cones around them from years of a slightly loose column rocking under load, and one had been drilled within about three inches of a control joint — which is a violation of nearly every anchor manufacturer’s edge-distance and crack requirements. We shifted the new column positions 14 inches toward the bay center, which also improved his door-swing clearance, filled and patched the old holes with a structural epoxy grout, and set new 3/4-inch wedge anchors to the embedment and torque values in the installation manual, verified with a calibrated torque wrench and documented on a signed install sheet. That sheet matters. When a factory auditor asks about the 2 post car lift in the inspection lane, having certification paperwork plus a documented torque record ends the discussion in about ninety seconds. Safety Devices, Inspection Intervals, and the Paper Trail
ANSI/ALI ALOIM is the standard that covers operation, inspection, and maintenance, and it calls for an annual inspection by a qualified lift inspector plus documented daily and periodic checks by the operator. Dealerships tend to be good at this because manufacturers audit them. Independent shops tend to be terrible at it. Either way, the requirements are the same, and they are not onerous: daily visual check of cables, hoses, arm restraints, and latch function; periodic lubrication; annual third-party inspection with a written report.
On this project we walked his techs through what to actually look at, because “inspect the safety devices” means nothing without specifics. Arm restraints should lock positively and not spin freely when the arms are loaded. Mechanical latches should engage audibly at every position and both columns should catch within the same notch — if one column consistently catches a notch behind the other, the equalization cables need adjustment before anything else gets touched. Overhead shutoff bars should stop the motor, not just look pretty. Hydraulic hoses should show no weeping at the fittings and no abrasion where they cross a beam edge. Cables should have no broken strands and no flat spots at the sheaves. We handed over a one-page daily checklist and taped a copy inside the electrical panel door. A 2 post car lift with a boring, complete inspection log is an asset. One with no records is a liability sitting in your building.
Installation Details That Change Throughput
Once the configuration was settled, the details that mattered most were the ones that affect how fast a tech can work. We set the columns for a drive-through clearance of 9 feet 2 inches rather than the minimum, because backing a full-size SUV between columns at 8 feet 10 inches with mirrors out is where door dings come from. We positioned the power unit column on the side away from the tech’s normal walking path so the control handle was reachable but the housing was not something to catch a hip on. We ran the electrical drop from above rather than across the floor.
We also spent time on pad selection, which people underrate. Inspection work means constant pinch-weld lifting on unibody cars and frame lifting on trucks, and swapping between them thirty times a week. He got a set of screw-up adapters plus a set of frame cradle pads and a small rack mounted to the column so nothing lived on the floor. Little thing, but it saves a tech thirty seconds each way, and thirty seconds times sixty lift cycles a week times fifty weeks is over twenty-five hours a year. What It Cost and What He’d Do Differently
Without quoting exact figures, the project landed in the mid-range for a certified 12,000 lb commercial installation: the columns and arms were the largest line, install labor and anchor work the second, and accessories and disposal of the old unit the remainder. Removing and hauling off the non-certified unit was a real cost that people forget to budget — old columns are heavy, awkward, and worth almost nothing as scrap relative to the labor of getting them out.
Asked what he would change, he had two answers. First, he would have moved on it a year earlier instead of nursing a unit with a cracked shutoff bar through another inspection season. Second, he would have bought a second set of pads at the start rather than waiting until the techs complained. Neither answer had anything to do with brand or capacity, which is typical.
