A 2 post car lift is the single biggest decision a family-owned restoration shop will make about their bay, and the overhead-vs-baseplate question comes up every time we drive into Council Bluffs. We recently walked a third-generation metal and restoration shop through exactly this choice, and it wasn’t a five-minute conversation. Ceiling height, ductwork, old concrete, and the kind of long-hood classics they roll through the door all mattered. What Overhead Actually Requires Overhead

An overhead-style 2 post car lift routes its equalization cable or hydraulic line through the top beam that connects the two columns, which means there’s no floor-level crossbar to trip over or grind through when a fender is hanging off a jig. For a restoration bay doing bodywork, that clear floor matters — you’re rolling carts, extension cords, and sometimes a second set of jack stands underneath a lifted shell. But overhead configuration eats ceiling height. We generally tell shops to plan on 12 feet of clearance minimum to the underside of any joists, ductwork, or sprinkler heads, and closer to 13-14 feet is comfortable once you add the vehicle height itself on the arms.

Older Council Bluffs buildings, especially the brick-and-post shops that have been in a family for two generations, often have lower trusses than a shop built in the last twenty years. We’ve had to measure twice and walk away from overhead options more than once because a duct ran right through the swing path. If your shop has open ceiling with exposed joists above 12 feet, overhead is a great match for a 2 post car lift doing metal work. If not, it’s worth checking the next option before you fall in love with a model.

Baseplate Configuration and Why Restoration Shops Still Choose It

Baseplate lifts run the hydraulic equalization line or cable through a channel in the floor-level base rather than overhead, which drops your ceiling requirement down closer to 9-10 feet depending on the model and arm length. For a lot of the older Council Bluffs buildings we service, that’s the difference between a 2 post car lift fitting at all and not fitting. The tradeoff is that baseplate models have a low crossmember at the base of each column, which can interfere with long floor jacks or rolling carts if you’re not planning your bay layout around it.

For restoration and metal work specifically, we usually recommend baseplate when the shop is doing full-frame or unibody work with a rotisserie or jig nearby, because you can position the lift off to the side and use the open floor space for the rotisserie work independently. It also tends to be a bit more straightforward on older concrete — baseplate lifts anchor entirely at floor level, so you’re not asking a beam-supported ceiling structure to help carry any part of the load. We’ve set these into 3.5 and 4 inch slabs in older Iowa shops with proper anchor spacing, no structural surprises.

Real Dimensions That Decide the Configuration

Numbers matter more than preference here. A typical 10,000 lb 2 post car lift, whether Bendpak, Rotary, or Challenger commercial, runs roughly 132-140 inches overall height for overhead-style units and closer to 128-132 inches for baseplate versions once you account for the arm reach at full rise. Width between columns is usually 100-104 inches outside-to-outside, which needs a bay at least 12 feet wide once you leave working clearance on both sides — tighter than that and you’ll be climbing over columns every time you get in or out of the vehicle.

Drive-through clearance also differs. Overhead units give you a completely unobstructed floor from column to column, which restoration shops doing full rotisserie transfers appreciate. Baseplate units narrow that usable floor slightly with the base rail, but in exchange you gain roughly 2-3 feet of usable ceiling height that can go toward a taller lift vehicle or hoist-and-chain work overhead. We always tape off the actual footprint on the shop floor before ordering — it takes ten minutes and saves a very expensive mistake.

What a Third-Generation Restoration Shop Actually Told Us

The shop we worked with in Council Bluffs has been doing frame and metal restoration for three generations, and their existing building had a mix of low trusses in the older half and taller open steel in a newer addition. We ended up recommending overhead for the newer bay, where the ceiling gave us the room, and baseplate for the older section where a duct run made overhead impossible. That’s often how it goes — a shop with two bays doesn’t have to pick one configuration for the whole building.

Their biggest concern going in wasn’t the lift itself, it was whether a 2 post car lift could handle decades-old sheet metal and frame sections without flexing or marking panels during long static holds. Both configurations handle that fine when the arms are set correctly and the vehicle is on solid pinch points, but we walked their crew through arm placement on a couple of body-on-frame classics specifically because restoration cars don’t always have factory-marked lift points anymore.

Anchoring Into Older Concrete

This comes up constantly with legacy shops. Baseplate configuration needs a slab that can take four to eight anchor points per column depending on the model, and older Council Bluffs slabs are sometimes thinner or have unknown rebar placement from decades of patch work. We core-test or at minimum visually inspect the slab thickness before quoting anchor depth, because a 2 post car lift under load puts real pull-out force on those bolts during a full rise-and-lock cycle.

Overhead configuration shifts some of that structural question to the building’s steel rather than the floor, since the top beam is tying the columns together mechanically in addition to the anchors. That can actually be an advantage on a slab you’re not fully confident in, as long as the ceiling structure itself is sound. We’ve told more than one shop that their existing slab needed a leveling pour or partial replacement before we’d anchor a baseplate lift into it — better to know that before delivery than after.

Freight, Install Timing, and What to Expect on Delivery Day

Once you’ve settled on overhead or baseplate, the logistics are the same either way. Lead time on a new 2 post car lift typically runs anywhere from a few weeks to several months depending on the brand and current demand, and once it’s on site we’re usually booked out two to three weeks for install. Installation itself is generally a full day of work as long as power is already run to the bay — if we’re wiring in a new circuit too, plan on more.

We ask every shop the same logistics questions before delivery day: is there a forklift on site to help unload, is the floor already clear of the old equipment if this is a replacement, and is the lift actually arriving at the building it’ll be installed in, since additional hose work and freight complications come up when it isn’t. Freight costs and total install pricing vary by size, accessories, and distance, so we always quote it as a range rather than a flat number until we’ve confirmed the exact model and bay conditions.

Which Configuration Fits Your Shop

If you’re a restoration or metal shop weighing overhead against baseplate, start with a tape measure, not a catalog. Measure your actual ceiling clearance to the lowest obstruction, measure your bay width, and note where your ductwork, sprinkler lines, and any lighting runs sit. That tells you which configuration is even possible before cost or brand preference enters the conversation. A 2 post car lift that doesn’t physically fit your building isn’t a good deal at any price.
