Every spring we get calls from farm shop owners across the Davenport and Muscatine county corridor asking the same question: what does it actually take to add a 2 post car lift to a shed that already handles combines, planters, and pickups? Rural shops are a different animal than a commercial dealer bay. Concrete is thinner, ceilings vary wildly, power is often single-phase 220, and the lift has to double for tire rotations on the family half-ton and quick fixes on a hired hand’s car. This is the pre-purchase checklist we walk owners through before they put money down, including the financing terms most first-time buyers do not know exist.

Step 1: Measure the slab, honestly
Most farm sheds we have installed lifts in were built with four-inch slabs poured onto compacted gravel with no rebar and no vapor barrier. That is fine for tractor traffic, but it is the ragged edge for a 2 post car lift. Manufacturer specs almost universally call for 4 to 4.75 inches of 3,000 psi concrete for a 10,000 lb lift, and 6 inches for anything heavier. What the spec sheet does not tell you is that a fresh slab is often only 3.5 inches at its thinnest corner because the ground settled while it cured.
Take a rotary hammer and a marker to the four spots where your anchor pattern will land. Drill test holes just deep enough to hit the bottom of the slab and measure. If any of the four is under 4 inches, either add a pad pour under the columns or step down to a lower-capacity lift with a smaller anchor footprint. Do not skip this step. A pulled anchor in a rural shop with a pickup on the lift is not a story anyone wants to tell.
Step 2: Pick capacity around the heaviest thing you actually lift
A farm shop’s honest use case is usually not the diesel dually. It is the wife’s SUV, the son’s project car, and the occasional visiting cousin’s F-150. If your heaviest regularly-lifted vehicle is under 6,000 lb, a 9,000 or 10,000 lb 2 post car lift is right-sized. If you plan to occasionally set a three-quarter ton or heavier pickup on it for a brake job, jump to 12,000 lb and be done second-guessing yourself.
Do not up-spec to 15,000 or 18,000 lb thinking you might lift a service truck. Those capacity classes have wider arm swings and taller columns, and they crowd out the working space that makes tire rotation quick. We regularly sell 10K-class two-posts to farm shops and 12K to shops with a heavier truck mix. On tire work specifically, a 10K lift with truck adapters and quality air tools is the sweet spot.
Step 3: Understand financing before you shop
The change in the last two years for rural shops has been financing. First Business Bank runs a 0% APR program for 12 months with 90-day deferred payments on lift purchases through us. That means you can order a lift in April, take delivery and install in May, and the first payment does not clear until August after harvest planning is settled. For a family farm shop that is a very different conversation than paying cash up front.
The trade-off is that the financing requires the standard credit application, a business name, and the loan is secured against the equipment. If you are LLC-registered as a farm operation you will fly through it. Ask for the Lori-at-First-Business packet when you call us and we will send it before we send the invoice. Step 4: Tire rotation is a small-detail job
The most common job on a farm shop lift is not the dramatic engine drop. It is tire rotation. Four wheels off the ground, cross-rotate front to back, torque to spec, run inside for coffee. On a two-post that job is fast if your arm and pad setup is right, and slow if it is wrong. Get three-stage front arms with drop-end pads and telescoping rear arms, and buy the truck adapter stack while you are at it.
Consider a bead-breaker and a manual tire changer for the shop too. If you have the lift, you will find yourself doing tire changes for family and neighbors, and having the tooling to seat a bead without calling the tire store on a Saturday is worth the small extra investment. Step 5: Power, air, and cable routing before install day
Farm sheds usually have plenty of 220V single-phase available for a two-post, which is what most 10K residential-commercial lifts run. What they often do not have is a dedicated 20-amp circuit at the base of the column, or air routed within easy reach. Plan both before install day. Set a subpanel with a dedicated breaker labeled for the lift, run air within eight feet of the driver-side column, and if you want reels overhead now is the time to install the crossbeam.
Overhead versus baseplate matters here. If your shed has 12-foot ceilings clear, overhead is fine and it gets the hydraulic lines out of the way. If the shed dips below 12 feet or has a low-hanging fluorescent, go baseplate and route the crossover through the floor. We have installed both in Davenport-area shops and neither is a bad choice. It is about your ceiling and your habits.
Step 6: Install day — DIY versus hire us
A 2 post car lift is legally a DIY install in Iowa. Whether you should is another question. The physical work is not hard: two columns to plumb, an overhead beam or floor crossover to set, hydraulic lines to route, and anchors to torque. The trap is the anchor torque and the column plumb. Under-torque and the anchors pull. Over-torque and the concrete cracks. Off-plumb columns and the lift binds within a year.
Our install crew charges a flat rate that includes concrete-check, anchor-set, plumb, hydraulic bleed, and a lift-cycle test with an actual vehicle. For most farm shops it is worth the money. If you would rather DIY, at least buy a two-hour phone-and-video consult with us so we can catch mistakes before they set. Either way, keep the install manual and the torque spec sheet in the shed with the lift.
Step 7: Maintenance, cables, and life expectancy
A properly installed 2 post car lift in a farm shop should last 25 years with basic maintenance. That maintenance is not exotic. Grease the sheaves twice a year. Inspect the cables annually for fraying or corrosion, especially if the shop is unheated. Change hydraulic fluid at the interval in the manual.
