A hobbyist in the Davenport area called us in the middle of a wheel bearing job on a mid-nineties sedan, working off jack stands on a garage floor, and asked what a 2 post car lift would really cost him over the twenty years he plans to keep it. That is a better question than “what’s your cheapest one,” and almost nobody asks it. The purchase price is the smallest number in the equation once you spread it across two decades. Concrete work, cables, seals, fluid, anchors and eventually a power unit all get added to the ledger. We install and service lifts across Iowa and the Quad Cities, and we have replaced parts on units older than the people using them. Here is the checklist we would work through before you buy.

Step One: Measure Before You Shop, Not After
Almost every bad two-post purchase we get called out to fix started with someone buying on price and measuring afterward. Three numbers decide what will physically work in your garage. Ceiling height comes first. A clearfloor overhead model needs roughly twelve feet minimum for a full-rise unit, and if your finished ceiling is eleven feet you are either buying a baseplate model or accepting a low-rise version that will not let you stand under a car. We hear “eleven to twelve feet” from Quad Cities garage owners constantly, and that gap between eleven and twelve is the difference between two very different lifts.
Second is slab thickness and condition. Four inches of properly cured concrete is the common minimum, and “about four inches, maybe less” — which is what people usually tell us — is not a measurement. Drill a test hole in an inconspicuous spot or have it cored. If you are short, a saw-cut and repour of two pads under the columns is a weekend of work and a modest materials bill, and it is far cheaper than an anchor pull-out with a car in the air. Third is bay width and door opening. Twenty feet of interior width is comfortable for a two-post; sixteen feet is tight but workable if you plan arm swing carefully. Measure the overhead door height too, because a raised vehicle plus a lift beam has to clear whatever is above it when you drive in.
Step Two: Match Capacity to Your Actual Heaviest Vehicle
Hobbyists routinely overbuy capacity and underbuy everything else. If the heaviest thing you will ever put up is a six-thousand-pound truck, a ten-thousand-pound unit gives you a comfortable margin and is the volume sweet spot where parts are cheapest and most available. Fifteen-thousand-pound units exist for a reason, but that reason is fleet trucks and duallies, not a personal car collection. The extra capacity costs money at purchase, needs thicker concrete, and buys you nothing on a wheel bearing job.
Where you should spend instead is on arm configuration and pad quality. Doing wheel bearing and brake work means the wheels come off, which means the vehicle hangs on the frame or pinch welds for hours at a time while you fight a stubborn hub. Asymmetric arm layouts let you open a door and get in the car with it in the air, which matters more than most first-time buyers expect. Drop-end or telescoping arms reach unibody lift points on lower cars without stacking a tower of blocks. Screw-up pads with real thread engagement adjust to uneven pickup points on older cars far better than fixed rubber blocks. On a twenty-year horizon, a good arm and pad setup is the difference between a lift you enjoy using and one you resent, and it costs a fraction of jumping a capacity tier.
Step Three: Add Up the Real Installation Line Items
The sticker on a 2 post car lift is not the number you should be budgeting against. Freight is real and it is not small — these units ship on a pallet by LTL truck and a residential delivery without a dock costs more than a commercial one. If you have no forklift and no way to unload, you need a liftgate or a plan involving a neighbor with a tractor. Several people we have shipped to arranged their own unloading, which is a legitimate way to save a couple hundred dollars if you actually have the equipment.
Then there is electrical. Most two-post power units want 220 volt single-phase service, and if your garage has one fifteen-amp circuit running the lights and a compressor, you are hiring an electrician. Budget accordingly. Anchors and the drilling for them are usually included with the lift but the rotary hammer to set them may not be. Concrete work, if your slab is marginal, is its own line. And if you choose professional installation, that is a defined cost that includes plumb-and-level setup, anchor torque, bleeding the hydraulic circuit, and a safety check of every lock. Plenty of hobbyists install their own and do it well — we sell to them regularly and they tell us up front they do not want install. Just decide which path you are on before you buy, because the total delivered-and-working number is what you should be comparing between brands, not the base price.
Step Four: Know What Wears Out and When on a 2 Post Car Lift
Over twenty years, a 2 post car lift in light hobby use will consume a fairly predictable list of parts, and knowing that list up front makes the ownership math honest. Hydraulic fluid should be checked yearly and changed every several years; it is the cheapest thing on the list and the most neglected. Cylinder seals are typically the first real failure, and on a low-cycle home lift that might not happen until year ten or fifteen. A reseal kit is inexpensive; a complete replacement cylinder is a mid-hundreds item on common models. Equalizer cables stretch and eventually fray, and on a hobby unit you are realistically looking at one replacement set across two decades, plus sheave bearings if they have been dry.
Lift pads are consumables — rubber compresses and tears, and you will buy pads two or three times over twenty years. Arm restraint gears and latch springs are cheap but they do fail, usually from being forced. The power unit motor is the big-ticket item, and on a lightly used home lift it often outlives the owner’s interest in the hobby. Add it all up and a well-chosen two-post in light service costs surprisingly little per year to keep safe — the annual carrying cost is comparable to a couple of oil changes. What blows that budget up is buying something whose parts nobody stocks. That is the real risk, not wear.
Step Five: Check Parts Availability Before You Commit
This is the single most important item on the checklist and the one that gets skipped every time. Before you buy any lift, find out whether replacement cylinders, cable sets, seal kits, pads and latch hardware are available domestically and how long they take to arrive. We have taken calls from people with orphaned import lifts where the answer was that no part exists at any price, and the only option was replacing an otherwise sound unit. On a twenty-year horizon that is a catastrophic outcome that a five-minute question at purchase time would have prevented.

BendPak and Atlas are well supported at the home and light-commercial tier and are honest values for a garage. Beyond those, availability gets thin fast. Practical test: pick a specific model you are considering, then search for a replacement cylinder and a cable kit for that exact model and see whether anyone lists them with a part number and a price. Step Six: Baseplate Versus Clearfloor for a Low Garage
Quad Cities garages are frequently short on ceiling, and that pushes a lot of buyers toward baseplate designs. The tradeoff is straightforward and worth understanding rather than guessing at. Baseplate models route the hydraulic lines and equalizer cables through a channel across the floor between the columns, so nothing needs to span overhead. That means you can install under a lower ceiling and you gain unlimited vertical clearance above the vehicle — useful if you want to open a hood all the way with the car in the air, or if there is a loft or duct run overhead.
The cost is that floor channel. You will step over it, roll a jack over it, and sweep around it for twenty years. Some people never think about it again; others find it genuinely irritating in a two-car garage where the lift shares space with a parked vehicle. Clearfloor overhead units give you a completely open floor and an overhead beam with a shutoff bar that protects tall vehicles, but they demand the height. Our rule of thumb: if your finished ceiling is twelve feet or better and there is nothing structural in the way, go clearfloor.
