What you’re looking for: broken strands, flat spots where the cable rides against a sheave, rust bloom on cables in a shop that isn’t perfectly dry, and any fraying near the swaged ends. If you see any of that on one cable, replace both on that side, and honestly, most shops replace all cables on the lift at once since they’re wearing at a similar rate. If the lift is older than 10 years and this is the second or third cable issue you’ve had, it’s worth asking whether you’re maintaining a lift or slowly rebuilding one piece at a time.

That’s the fork in the road for a lot of Des Moines metro shop owners: repair the cable and keep running the existing 2 post car lift, or put that money toward a newer unit. Differential work, engine pulls, and frame-off restorations put unusual loads in unusual places on a lift, and having headroom in capacity gives you margin. If ceiling height is generous and you’re mostly working hot rods, an extended-height configuration is worth discussing before you commit to a standard height column.

Configuration Second: Symmetric, Asymmetric, or Extended Height

Once budget is roughly set, configuration is the next fork. Asymmetric two post lifts are the most common choice for general repair and restoration work because the offset arms make room for door swing and give better weight distribution for most vehicle types. Symmetric configurations still have a place, particularly in shops that work on a narrower range of vehicle types where even weight distribution front to back matters more than door clearance.
