A symmetric 2 post car lift has its columns positioned so the arms extend equally on both sides of the centerline, putting the vehicle’s weight balanced directly between the posts. It’s a simple, stable setup and it’s what most general repair bays run. An asymmetric 2 post car lift shifts the columns back, with shorter arms toward the front of the vehicle and longer arms reaching toward the rear, so the car sits offset toward the back of the bay. That offset is the entire point: it opens up clear space in front of the vehicle for the door to swing wide and for a technician to walk around without ducking under an arm.

For alignment work specifically, that clearance matters in a way it doesn’t for an oil change. Alignment techs need to get in and out of the vehicle repeatedly, reach the steering wheel to center it, and move around the front end to adjust tie rods and cam bolts. On a symmetric 2 post car lift, the front columns often sit close enough to the front tires that they interfere with turn-plate access or block the alignment head’s line of sight. We’ve walked into dealership bays where a symmetric setup was installed for general service years before the shop added an alignment rack, and now every alignment job takes ten to fifteen extra minutes just working around the arms. That adds up fast across a service drive doing multiple alignments a day.

A typical asymmetric 2 post car lift rated for 10,000 to 12,000 lbs will have front arms reaching roughly 24 to 34 inches and rear arms extending out to 40-plus inches, with columns set back from the vehicle’s front bumper by design. Overall width between columns on most commercial units runs 128 to 144 inches outside-to-outside, which needs to be checked against actual bay width before ordering — we’ve measured Des Moines metro bays that looked plenty wide on paper but had support columns or ductwork eating into the clearance once you account for full arm swing.

Ceiling height is the other number that trips people up. A two-post lift raising a vehicle to full working height for underbody alignment adjustments typically needs 12 feet of clear ceiling at minimum, more if you’re running a taller lift arm package or want room for a tire changer boom to swing overhead too. Capacity Isn’t Just About Vehicle Weight

Dealership service drives handle everything from compact sedans to heavy-duty trucks and the occasional SUV in for a lift-and-level. This is also where drive-through symmetric configurations sometimes surprise people — a drive-on style lift, more common on four-post setups, isn’t typically what alignment bays want because the runways themselves can interfere with turn plate access. For true alignment work, an asymmetric two-post with open turn-plate space nearly always outperforms a drive-on configuration, which is one more reason dealership service managers lean toward asymmetric two-post lifts rather than converting an existing four-post bay.

Getting a new 2 post car lift into an active dealership bay is a scheduling puzzle as much as a mechanical one. We ask the same questions every time: is there a forklift on site to move the lift components, is the concrete slab rated and level, and does the shop want the install done on a weekend to avoid shutting down a working bay during the week.
