A collector outside Dubuque came to us wanting a 2 post car lift for a garage full of stored vehicles — a couple of muscle cars, a truck he actually drives, and a project that hadn’t turned a wheel in six years. He had a specific job in mind that pushed him over the edge on buying: front wheel bearings on the project car, which he’d been putting off because doing it on jack stands in a cold Iowa garage sounded like a bad afternoon. What followed was a ceiling measurement, an honest conversation about overhead versus baseplate, an install day in February, and a first service that told him whether he’d made the right call. Here’s that whole first year.

The Measurement That Decided Everything
The first thing we do on any home or collector garage inquiry is ask for a ceiling height, and then ask what’s actually at that height. There’s a difference between the peak of a garage and the usable height where the columns go. Trusses, garage door tracks, opener rails, light fixtures, and the header above the door all steal inches. Our Dubuque customer told us fourteen feet, which is generous, but the door opener rail ran right down the center of the bay and the door itself, when open, sat under the track for most of the bay depth.
That’s the situation where the configuration question stops being theoretical. An overhead two-post puts a crossbeam between the columns at roughly eleven and a half to twelve feet, carrying the equalizer cables and the shutoff bar. If your garage door opens into that space, you either relocate to a jackshaft-style side-mount opener, reposition the lift outside the door swing, or go baseplate. In this case, he already had room to shift the lift back and the door track cleared, so overhead stayed on the table. We’ve had plenty of customers where it didn’t — one caller with a hard 139-inch ceiling limit was set on an overhead unit and we steered him to baseplate instead, which was simply the correct answer for his building.
Overhead vs Baseplate: What Each One Actually Costs You
Both configurations do the same job — the difference is where the synchronization cables and hydraulic lines run. Overhead routes them through a top beam; baseplate routes them through a channel bolted to the floor between the columns. Neither is inherently better. They trade one inconvenience for another.
Overhead gives you a completely clear floor. Nothing to drive over, nothing to trip on, nothing to catch a floor jack or a creeper on, and no channel filling up with brake dust and gravel. That’s a genuine daily-life benefit in a garage where you’re rolling toolboxes and parts carts around constantly. The cost is vertical space and the shutoff bar, which is a hard limit on how tall a vehicle you can raise — lift a tall van or a truck with a roof rack and the bar stops you well short of full rise. Baseplate flips it: you get the full column height available for tall vehicles and you need less ceiling overall, which is why it’s the go-to for garages under about eleven and a half feet. The tradeoff is that floor channel. It’s low-profile on modern units, but it’s there, and on a low car with an air dam you’ll be paying attention to it every time you drive in. For a collector with low-slung cars, that matters more than it does for a truck owner.
Sizing the Lift for a Collection, Not a Single Car
The mistake we see collectors make is sizing to the car they’re working on right now. A 3,600 lb muscle car sounds like it needs nothing special, and a 9,000 lb capacity would technically cover it with margin to spare. But collections change. Somebody buys a truck. Somebody’s kid brings over a modern SUV that weighs more than anyone expects — plenty of three-row crossovers are over 5,500 lb curb weight before passengers. And storage-focused owners often end up doing favors for friends, at which point the lift sees vehicles nobody planned for.
We generally recommend 10,000 lb as the floor for any 2 post car lift going into a collector garage, and we don’t think that’s overselling. The price difference between a 9,000 and a 10,000 lb unit is modest, and the 10,000 lb models typically come with better arm geometry, taller screw pads, and heavier carriages. Beyond capacity, think about arm style. Asymmetric arms — shorter fronts, longer rears — let you set the vehicle back in the bay so the doors clear the columns. That’s exactly what you want for a car you’re getting in and out of repeatedly during a project. Symmetric arms center the vehicle and handle longer wheelbases and trucks better. Concrete: The Part Nobody Wants to Hear About
Our Dubuque customer thought his slab was six inches. He’d been told that when he bought the house. We drilled a test hole in the anchor zone and got four and a quarter, with the aggregate looking a little tired near the surface. That was still workable for a 10,000 lb unit — most manufacturers spec a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for that capacity — but it was a full two inches thinner than he expected, and if it had come back at three, we’d have been talking about saw-cutting and pouring footing pads before anything got anchored.
This is the number one thing we want homeowners and collectors to check before they buy. Not guess, not assume, not go by what the previous owner said — actually measure. A masonry bit and a tape measure costs nothing. You also want to know where you are relative to slab edges and control joints, because anchors set too close to an edge or into a joint don’t hold, and no amount of torque fixes that. Age matters too: concrete poured within the last thirty days hasn’t reached design strength. We’ve walked away from install dates because a fresh pour needed more cure time, and every one of those customers was glad afterward. If your slab doesn’t measure up, the fix is real but manageable — cut out a section under each column, pour to the manufacturer’s spec, cure it, then anchor. Plan for the timeline, not just the cost.
Install Day in a February Garage
We set his lift in late winter, which in eastern Iowa means a heated garage or a long cold day. Install on a two-post is a methodical process and it’s worth knowing what it looks like so you can judge whether whoever’s doing yours is doing it right. Columns get positioned to the manufacturer’s spacing, squared and checked diagonally, then plumbed with shims — and shimming matters, because a column that’s out of plumb loads the carriage unevenly and wears the slide blocks fast. Anchors get drilled to depth, cleaned out, set, and torqued to spec. Not “tight.” To spec, with a torque wrench.
Then the overhead beam goes up, cables get routed over the sheaves and tensioned so both carriages rise together, hydraulic lines get connected, the power unit gets mounted and wired, and the system gets filled and bled. The bleed is where people rush and pay for it later — trapped air makes the lift drift and shudder. Finally the safety locks get tested at multiple heights, and the whole thing gets cycled empty and then under load. A single-bay residential install with good concrete and clear access is typically most of a day for a two-person crew. Our customer’s took a bit longer because we had to work around a stored car we couldn’t easily move, which is worth planning for — clear the bay and the adjacent space before install day if you can.
The First Real Job: Wheel Bearings, Finally
The wheel bearing job that started this whole thing happened about three weeks after install. On jack stands, a front bearing on an older car is a wrestling match — you’re on your back, the hub is at chest height at best, and you’re fighting a press-fit component with limited leverage and no room to swing. On the lift, with the wheels hanging free at chest height, it turned into a comfortable job. Rotor off, caliper hung, knuckle accessible from every angle, and the press work done at a height where he could actually put his weight into it.
That’s the argument for a two-post over ramps or a four-post for anyone doing real mechanical work rather than just storage. Wheels-free access is the whole point. Suspension, brakes, bearings, steering, exhaust, and anything involving the underside of the car all get dramatically easier when nothing is holding the wheels up. He told us afterward that the job took him about half the time he’d budgeted and he wasn’t sore the next day, which for a guy in his sixties working on his own cars is the actual return on investment. Over the rest of that first year, he did brakes on two vehicles, chased an exhaust leak, and finally got under the project car to properly assess the floor pans. A four-post would have handled the storage side better, but for hands-on work the 2 post car lift was the right tool.
What He’d Do Differently, and What We Tell the Next Caller
Asked a year in what he’d change, he had two answers. First, he’d have added the drive-through-friendly wide top beam option, because his garage layout ended up making him back in more often than he expected and a wider drive-through would have made that easier. Second, he’d have bought the taller screw pad extension set up front instead of ordering it separately three months later — on a collection with varied ride heights and pinch weld locations, you end up wanting more pad stack than the base kit gives you. Neither is a complaint about the lift. They’re the small things you only learn by living with the equipment.
What we tell the next Dubuque caller is the same thing we told him: measure your usable ceiling height including the door track, drill a test hole in the concrete, and be honest about the heaviest vehicle that will ever go on it. Those three numbers determine whether you’re looking at overhead or baseplate and what capacity you need, and everything else is preference. If your ceiling is over twelve feet and clear, go overhead for the open floor. If you’re tight, or you need to raise tall vehicles to full height, go baseplate and accept the channel. Either way, get it anchored into verified concrete by someone who owns a torque wrench.
