Start With Ceiling Height, Not Capacity

Almost every Dubuque home garage we survey falls between 10 and 14 feet of clear ceiling, and that single measurement eliminates more models than anything else on the spec sheet. A standard clearfloor overhead unit needs roughly 12 feet minimum to the underside of the crossbar assembly, and manufacturers publish an overall height that often lands between 144 and 152 inches. If your trusses sit at 139 inches — a number we hear constantly — the overhead configuration is off the table unless you’re willing to modify framing.

That’s where baseplate designs earn their keep. Moving the hydraulic lines and equalization cables into a floor-mounted channel drops overall height to the column height alone, typically 105 to 116 inches depending on model. You trade a raised bar across the floor for several feet of vertical clearance. Some manufacturers also offer low-ceiling adapter kits or shortened column options on their overhead units, which can bring an otherwise-too-tall model into range. Measure from the finished slab to the lowest obstruction — a garage door opener rail, a light fixture, a sprinkler head — not to the peak. We’ve seen more than one buyer measure to the ridge, order a tall unit, and discover the door track sits eight inches lower than everything else in the bay.

Capacity: 9,000, 10,000 or 12,000 Pounds

Home garage buyers routinely overbuy here, and we’d rather talk you into the right number than the biggest one. If your heaviest vehicle is a half-ton pickup at roughly 6,000 pounds, a 9,000 or 10,000 pound unit carries a comfortable margin. A three-quarter-ton diesel, a full-size van or a classic land yacht with a cast iron big block pushes you toward 12,000. Capacity ratings on a two post assume balanced loading across all four arms, so a truck with a heavy front end still sits well inside spec on a 10,000 pound unit.

Where capacity does change the machine is in structure. A 12,000 pound model uses heavier column steel, larger cylinders, thicker carriages and a beefier arm set — which also means a wider footprint and more anchor bolt pull-out demand on your slab. If your concrete is marginal, the smaller-capacity unit may be the only one your floor will legally support. We ask every caller two questions before quoting: what’s the heaviest thing you’ll put on it, and what’s your slab thickness. Those two answers narrow a catalog of forty models to about four. For most Dubuque hobby garages, a 10,000 pound asymmetric ends up being the sweet spot on price, footprint and versatility.

Symmetric vs. Asymmetric Arms for Alignment Work

This is the spec that trips up first-timers more than any other. A symmetric configuration places the columns directly across from one another with equal-length arms, centering the vehicle between them. An asymmetric configuration rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees and pairs short front arms with long rear arms, shifting the vehicle rearward so the doors clear the columns. If you plan to sit in the car with it in the air — which you will, doing alignment work or chasing an electrical gremlin — asymmetric is worth the small premium.

For alignment specifically, arm geometry matters beyond door clearance. You want three-stage front arms with enough reach to hit factory pinch weld points on both a low sports car and a lifted truck without swapping adapters. Look for minimum pad height in the spec sheet: anything at or below 4 inches with drop-end arms will handle a lowered car. Maximum reach in the 60-inch range on the rear arms covers long-wheelbase trucks. Also check the published drive-through clearance between columns — 99 inches is typical, but wide-body vehicles and dually mirrors appreciate the models that stretch past 100. Some units offer an expandable top beam that lets you configure wide or narrow drive-through at install, which is a genuinely useful feature in a tight residential bay.

Reading Model Numbers Without a Decoder Ring

Manufacturers encode more into their part numbers than they explain. Rotary’s SPO series tells you it’s a two post with the numeric suffix indicating capacity in thousands — SPO10 is 10,000 pounds, SPO12 is 12,000. Challenger uses CL10 and CL12 with version suffixes like V3 for the current generation, and adds letters for arm configuration. BendPak’s XPR line uses the number for capacity and letters for configuration — the S in XPR-10S signals symmetric, and clearfloor versus baseplate shows up in the full model designation. Atlas and other value brands follow loosely similar logic.

The trap is assuming two lifts with the same capacity number are equivalent machines. Two 10,000 pound units can differ by 400 pounds of shipping weight, use completely different cylinder diameters, run different cable equalization systems, and carry different warranty terms on the structure versus the hydraulics. When we compare a 2 post car lift for a customer, we pull the actual spec sheets side by side and look at column steel thickness, carriage bearing design, lock spacing and whether the unit carries ALI certification. Certification is not a formality — it means the design was third-party tested to ANSI standards. Hydraulics, Rise Time and Lock Design

Spec sheets bury the parts you’ll interact with most. Power unit voltage matters for a residential install — most two post models ship configured for 220V single phase, and if your garage only has 110V service you’re looking at an electrical upgrade before the equipment arrives.

Lock design deserves a hard look too. Automatic mechanical safety locks should engage every three inches or so through the full rise, with a single-point release so you’re not walking around the vehicle pulling two separate handles. Cheaper designs use wider lock spacing and dual-point releases, and after the fiftieth cycle the difference stops feeling cosmetic. Cylinder configuration varies as well: some units run a single cylinder with a cable equalization system, others run direct-drive cylinders in each column. Both work, but the cable-equalized designs need periodic tension checks and eventual cable replacement, while dual-cylinder designs shift maintenance toward seals and hoses. What Your Dubuque Slab Has to Do

Every two post manufacturer publishes a minimum concrete spec, and it’s usually 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete at minimum, with many 12,000 pound models calling for 6 inches. That number is measured as continuous thickness under the entire column base, not the average across your garage. Homes built in the Dubuque area across several decades vary wildly — we’ve cored 5-inch slabs in 1970s attached garages and 3.5-inch slabs in newer builds where the contractor stretched the pour.

Verifying is straightforward: drill a small test hole at each planned column location, measure the depth, and patch it. If you come up short, the standard fix is cutting out a section roughly four by four feet at each column and pouring a properly reinforced pad tied into the existing slab. It’s a weekend of work and a modest expense compared to the cost of an anchor bolt pulling out of thin concrete with a car overhead. Also check for post-tension cables, radiant heat tubing and conduit runs before drilling — thermal imaging or a scan is cheap insurance in a garage with in-floor heat. Slab condition matters as much as thickness. Spalling, cracking or a floor that was poured over unstable fill will not hold anchors regardless of depth.
