A quick-lube franchise operator in east-central Iowa called us about adding a 2 post car lift to a bay he was converting for seasonal vehicle storage and light service work. His question was blunt: what does this actually cost me, all in? He had a number in his head from a website that listed equipment only, and that number was missing about a third of the real total. Freight, install labor, a 220V circuit, and — the one that got him — a concrete core test on a 1980s slab that turned out to be 3.5 inches with no reinforcement. Tier one: the equipment itself
Two-post pricing sorts into three rough tiers, and knowing which tier you are shopping keeps you from comparing apples to tractors. Entry-level 9,000 lb baseplate units — the kind that show up on marketplace listings and get described by their model shorthand, like a 9LC-style asymmetric — land in the low four figures. Mid-tier 10,000 lb clearfloor units with better arm geometry, single-piece columns, and real manufacturer support sit in the mid four figures. Commercial-grade 12,000 to 18,000 lb lifts from Rotary or Challenger start in the high four figures and climb from there depending on capacity and arm configuration.
The east-central Iowa operator initially wanted to stay under a number he had seen on an entry-level unit. We showed him what changes between tiers: cylinder quality and seal life, cable diameter and sheave design, lock mechanism engagement, and whether parts will still be available in eight years. Tier two: freight, unloading, and the forklift question
A two-post ships as two long columns, a crossbeam, four arms, and a power unit on one or two pallets, and the whole assembly runs 1,500 to 2,500 lb depending on capacity. Freight from the manufacturer or our warehouse to east-central Iowa is generally a few hundred dollars, more if the destination has no dock. Here is where budgets break: residential and small-commercial deliveries almost always arrive on a standard trailer with no liftgate rated for a column crate, and the driver is not responsible for getting it off.
If you have a forklift, say so on the order — it saves a meaningful chunk. We get leads regularly where the customer notes “I have a forklift for unloading,” and those jobs go smoothly. If you do not, options are a liftgate service on smaller units, a rented telehandler for the morning, or having our crew bring equipment as part of a full install. The quick-lube operator had a forklift in the back for oil drum pallets, so unloading cost him nothing but ten minutes. One caution: a bare column crate is top-heavy and long. Do not try to muscle it off a trailer with three guys and a couple of 2x8s. We have been called out to straighten a bent column that a customer dropped in the parking lot, and that repair cost more than the liftgate would have.
Concrete slab thickness and rebar: the line item nobody budgets
This is the section that changes quotes. Every two-post manufacturer publishes a minimum slab spec — commonly 4 inches of 3,000 PSI for a 9,000 or 10,000 lb model, and 4.25 inches at 3,500 PSI or more for higher capacities. Anchor bolts embed roughly 3.5 to 4 inches, so a 3.5-inch slab has essentially no margin, and a slab with a vapor barrier right under the surface can leave the anchor gripping almost nothing. Rebar or a welded wire mat matters because it distributes the tension load the anchors put on the concrete when a loaded lift tries to pull the column base upward.
We core-tested the east-central Iowa bay because the building dated to the early eighties and the owner had no drawings. Result: 3.5 inches, unreinforced, over compacted fill. The fix was a saw-cut, excavate, and pour of two reinforced footing pads roughly 4 feet by 4 feet by 12 inches deep under each column, tied to the existing slab with epoxy-set dowels, then a 28-day cure. That added a low four-figure line item and a month to the timeline. Painful, but far cheaper than the alternative. We have seen a column pull anchors out of thin concrete under load, and that is not a repair conversation. If your slab age or thickness is unknown, spend the small money on a core test before you buy a 2 post car lift. It is the best diagnostic dollar in this whole project.
Tier three: installation labor and what it includes
A standard two-post install on qualified concrete is a four-to-six hour job for a two-tech crew, and priced as a flat installation tier rather than hourly. That covers layout and chalk, setting and plumbing both columns, shimming square with steel shims, drilling and torquing anchors to spec, mounting the crossbeam, routing and tensioning equalizer cables, filling and bleeding the hydraulic system, cycling the unit unloaded, and a load test with an actual vehicle. What installation does not include, unless you ask: electrical. Most single-phase power units want a dedicated 220V, 20 to 30 amp circuit, and running that from your panel is an electrician’s line item ranging from modest to significant depending on distance and whether you are in a finished wall. Compressed air for the lock releases on some models is another small add. Travel matters too — we are based in Ames, so east-central Iowa is an easy drive and travel is minimal, but a job six hours out carries a different number. Some customers skip install entirely and DIY; we have leads that say plainly “does not need/want install.” That is fine if you have the equipment and read the manual carefully, but understand that anchor torque and column plumb are the two things that determine whether the lift is safe, and neither is forgiving of guesswork.
Configuration choices that move the total
Three decisions swing your budget more than brand does. First, overhead versus baseplate. Overhead clearfloor units keep the floor clean and are our default recommendation for service bays, but they demand roughly 12 to 12.5 feet of clear height on a 10,000 lb model. Baseplate designs drop the requirement to around 10 to 11 feet and often cost slightly less, at the price of a crossbeam you step over. We get leads specifically saying “can’t do an overhead — probably has to do baseplate,” usually because of a 139-inch maximum height or a low door track.
Second, symmetric versus asymmetric. Asymmetric rotates the columns and shifts the vehicle rearward so doors open freely — good for a quick-lube bay where techs are in and out of cabs constantly. Symmetric centers the load and handles long, heavy pickups better. Third, arm design: three-stage front arms and drop-end rear arms cost a little more and pay for themselves the first time a lowered car or a long crew cab rolls in. Adding it up for a realistic mid-tier project: equipment in the mid four figures, freight a few hundred, installation a flat tier in the four-figure range, electrical from several hundred to over a thousand depending on panel distance, and slab remediation from zero to a low four-figure add if your concrete does not qualify. For a shop with good 6-inch reinforced concrete, adequate ceiling, and existing 220V nearby, you are looking at equipment plus roughly 25 to 35 percent. For a converted bay in an older building like the one we cored, plan on equipment plus 60 to 80 percent.

When a lead tells us “willing to spend around four thousand” or “maybe five thousand,” the first thing we do is ask about slab, ceiling, and power, because those three answers determine whether that budget buys a working installed lift or just a crate in the corner. The purchase is the beginning, not the end. Annual budget items on a commercial two-post are modest but real: hydraulic fluid top-off and eventual change, equalizer cable inspection and replacement every several years depending on duty cycle, arm restraint gear repair, lock latch adjustment, and an ANSI/ALI annual inspection. Cables and cylinder seals are the two parts we ship most. A cylinder that weeps at the rod seal is a rebuild or replacement, not a top-off, and a frayed cable is a stop-work item — not a next-month item.
