What ALI Gold Certification Actually Certifies
ALI stands for the Automotive Lift Institute, and the gold label you see on a certified column is not a marketing sticker. It means an independent third-party lab tested that exact model against ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards — load capacity with a safety margin, structural fatigue cycling, stability under offset loading, control circuit behavior, safety lock function, and the completeness of the manuals and warning decals shipped with it. The manufacturer pays for that testing and then submits to ongoing audits. If a model changes materially, it gets retested. That is the whole point: nobody is grading their own homework.
The shop owner in Iowa City had assumed certification was about the installer. It is not. Certification attaches to the equipment model. Installation quality is a separate discipline, governed by ANSI/ALI ALIS, and inspection is a third one under ALI ALOIM. What we told him — and what we tell every shop — is that a certified column gives your insurance carrier something concrete to look at, gives an OSHA inspector a defensible paper trail, and gives you real recourse if something structural ever fails. An uncertified import gives you a phone number that may or may not still work in five years. Reading the Data Plate on an Inherited Lift
Before we could recommend anything, we had to figure out what he already owned. Every legitimate column carries a serial and capacity plate, usually on the powerside column near the base or inside the control box door. His was gone — painted over, most likely, during some previous owner’s cleanup. Without a plate you have no documented capacity, no model number for parts, and no way to prove to an inspector that the equipment was ever rated for what you are putting on it.
We measured what we could. Column height, carriage travel, arm geometry, cylinder configuration, and the anchor pattern all give clues. In this case the arm design and the overhead equalizer style pointed toward a mid-1990s domestic build, probably around 9,000 lb capacity. That is enough for most passenger work but marginal for a three-quarter-ton pickup coming in for a transmission. The bigger problem was that with no model number, sourcing correct cables, locks, or arm restraints becomes a guessing game. We can and do match legacy parts by measurement through our parts lookup, but you are always working with reduced confidence. Our recommendation was blunt: an unidentifiable 2 post car lift running commercial hours is a liability you cannot document your way out of. Replace it, keep the old one for storage duty if the concrete allows, and start clean with certified equipment and a folder of paperwork.
The Iowa City Concrete Question
Every conversation about a two post installation comes back to the slab. The published requirement for most 10,000 lb clearfloor models is a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least twenty-eight days, with no cracks or expansion joints inside the anchor footprint. Some 12,000 lb and larger units want six inches. Those are not suggestions — they are the conditions under which the anchor manufacturer guarantees pullout resistance.
Older Iowa City commercial buildings are all over the map. We have cored slabs downtown that came in at seven inches over good base and slabs in 1970s strip bays that measured three and a half with rebar running right where the anchor wants to go. This shop measured five inches at the front of the bay and four and a quarter toward the back, which is workable but tight. We drilled test holes rather than trusting a rebound hammer, because the only number that matters is the one under the columns. Where a slab comes up short, the fix is a cutout and pour — typically a four-by-four-foot pad per column, twelve inches deep, tied into the existing floor with dowels. It adds cost and a cure window, but it is far cheaper than resetting a 2 post car lift that has started to move under load. We would rather tell a shop owner a hard truth in week one than get a phone call in year three.
Symmetric, Asymmetric, and Transmission Work
Because he was adding transmission service, arm configuration mattered more than usual. A symmetric two post places the columns directly across from each other with equal-length arms, centering the vehicle between them. That gives you excellent balance for heavy trucks and vans but puts the door right at the column. An asymmetric unit rotates the columns roughly thirty degrees and uses shorter front arms, shifting the vehicle rearward so doors open freely. For a shop doing constant interior access, asymmetric wins.
Transmission work changes the calculus. You are standing under the center of the vehicle with a jack, wrestling a heavy assembly, and you want clear space and predictable balance. Many shops in this position land on a versymmetric design — arms that can be configured either way depending on what rolls in. Rotary and Challenger both offer that flexibility in their mainstream columns, and it is what we spec most often for general repair shops that will not know next Tuesday what is coming through the door. The other consideration is rise. Standard clearfloor units give you roughly seventy-two to seventy-nine inches of pad height. A six-foot-two technician needs the top of that range to stand upright under a transmission tunnel. If your ceiling is 12 feet or better, take the taller carriage. Arm Restraints, Safety Locks, and Daily Habits
The three mechanical systems that keep a vehicle in the air are the lock ladders inside the columns, the arm restraint gears at each arm pivot, and the equalization cables that keep the carriages traveling together. All three are cheap to maintain and catastrophic to ignore. Lock ladders should engage with an audible click every few inches of travel, and the operator should always lower onto the locks before going underneath — never leave the load hanging on hydraulic pressure alone.
Arm restraints are the piece shops neglect most. Each arm has a toothed gear or pin that engages when the pad contacts the vehicle and prevents the arm from swinging out from under a lift point. The teeth wear, grease dries out, and the spring loses tension. On the Iowa City unit, two of the four restraints did not engage at all — you could swing a loaded arm by hand. That single finding was reason enough to shut the equipment down. We replaced them the same week. Cables are the other wear item: fraying at the sheave, corrosion at the swaged ends, or one carriage sitting visibly lower than the other. Annual Inspection and the Insurance File
ALI ALOIM calls for a documented inspection by a qualified lift inspector at least once every twelve months. In practice, that means someone who knows the standard puts hands on the columns, checks anchor torque, measures cable stretch, tests lock engagement and release, verifies restraint function, inspects hydraulic lines and cylinder seals, confirms the overhead shutoff bar works, and writes it all down. You get a report and a dated tag. That tag is what a carrier or an inspector wants to see.
The Iowa City shop had never had one done in eleven years of ownership. That is more common than you would think, and it is the single easiest gap to close. We cut and poured two new anchor pads at the rear of the bay, waited out the cure, set the columns, torqued and documented every anchor, ran the power, and trained his crew on lock engagement and restraint checks before we left. Total elapsed time from first site visit to first vehicle in the air was about three weeks, most of that concrete cure.
On budget: a certified 10,000 lb clearfloor unit from a name brand generally lands in the low-to-mid four figures for equipment alone, with 12,000 lb and taller-carriage options stepping up from there. Professional installation, anchors, and electrical typically add a meaningful fraction on top, and concrete remediation is its own line item that varies with how much you have to remove. We quote all of it separately so you can see where the money goes rather than getting one lump number. What we will not do is quote you a cheap import to win a price comparison. A 2 post car lift is a twenty-year purchase in a shop that runs it right, and the certified units hold value, hold parts availability, and hold up under an inspector’s flashlight.
